Abstract

A navigation unit includes a position mode module that is operable to place the navigation unit in a first mode in which the navigation unit provides for output a current position of the navigation unit or a second mode in which the navigation unit provides for output at least one stored position.

Claims

1. A navigation unit, comprising:

a position mode module that is operable to place the navigation unit in a first mode in which the navigation unit provides for output a current position of the navigation unit or a second mode in which the navigation unit provides for output at least one stored position.

2. The navigation unit of claim 1, wherein the position mode module is operable to place the navigation unit in the first mode or the second mode responsive to input from a user.

3. The navigation unit of claim 2, further comprising:

a user interface module that is configured to store the at least one stored position for subsequent retrieval responsive to input from the user.

4. The navigation unit of claim 3, wherein the user interface module is further configured to provide audio, visual, and/or textual feedback to the user responsive to storing each of the at least one stored position.

5. The navigation unit of claim 3, wherein the user interface module is configured to display the at least one stored position to the user, receive a selection of one of the at least one stored position from the user, and provide the selected one of the at least one stored position for output when the navigation unit is placed in the second mode.

6. The navigation unit of claim 1, wherein each of the at least one stored position comprises a time, date, altitude, and/or speed associated therewith.

7. The navigation unit of claim 1, wherein the at least one stored position comprises a path traveled by the navigation unit over a time interval.

8. The navigation unit of claim 1, wherein the navigation unit is a Global Positioning System (GPS) unit.

9. A method of operating a navigation unit, comprising:

placing the navigation unit in a first mode in which the navigation unit provides for output a current position of the navigation unit; and

placing the navigation unit in a second mode in which the navigation unit provides for output at least one stored position.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein placing the navigation unit in the first mode comprises placing the navigation unit in the first mode responsive to input from a user;

and

wherein placing the navigation in the second mode comprises placing the navigation unit in the second mode responsive to input from the user.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

storing the at least one stored position for subsequent retrieval responsive to input from the user.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

providing audio, visual, and/or textual feedback to the user responsive to storing each of the at least one stored position.

13. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

displaying the at least one stored position to the user;

receiving a selection of one of the at least one stored position from the user; and

providing the selected one of the at least one stored position for output when the navigation unit is placed in the second mode.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein each of the at least one stored position comprises a time, date, altitude, and/or speed associated therewith.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein the at least one stored position comprises a path traveled by the navigation unit over a time interval.

16. The method of claim 9, wherein the navigation unit is a Global Positioning System (GPS) unit.

17. A computer program product for operating a navigation unit, comprising:

a computer readable storage medium having computer readable program code embodied therein, the computer readable program code comprising;

computer readable program code configured to place the navigation unit in a first mode in which the navigation unit provides for output a current position of the navigation unit; and

computer readable program code configured to place the navigation unit in a second mode in which the navigation unit provides for output at least one stored position.

18. The computer program product of claim 17, wherein the computer readable program code configured to place the navigation unit in the first mode comprises computer readable program code configured to place the navigation unit in the first mode responsive to input from a user;

and

wherein the computer readable program code configured to place the navigation in the second mode comprises computer readable program code configured to place the navigation unit in the second mode responsive to input from the user.

19. The computer program product of claim 18, further comprising:

computer readable program code configured to store the at least one stored position for subsequent retrieval responsive to input from the user.

20. The computer program product of claim 18, further comprising:

computer readable program code configured to display the at least one stored position to the user;

computer readable program code configured to receive a selection of one of the at least one stored position from the user; and

computer readable program code configured to provide the selected one of the at least one stored position for output when the navigation unit is placed in the second mode.
