Abstract

A system and method is provided for providing location based services. The system includes at least one module configured to publish location information of a mobile user using a publish subscribe format based on a user preference mode of notification.

Claims

1. A system comprising at least one module configured to publish location information of a mobile user using a publish subscribe format based on a user preference mode of notification.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one module is further configured to allow the mobile user to opt in or opt out of location based services.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the location information is provided as a visual rendering to end users.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the publish subscribe format is user configurable and includes at least one of a SIP, SMS, Rich Site Summary (RSS) and ATOM feed.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one module is at least one of maintained, deployed, created and supported on a computing infrastructure by a service provider.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one module publishes the location information on a collaborative network.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one module is configured to send a charging record to a charging platform using a diameter based protocol.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one module is a web service that is configured to provide location information of the mobile user.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one module includes:

a first module for registering the publish subscribe format;

a second module for requesting location information from a location platform and receiving the location information of the mobile user, the second module sends the location information to a notification gateway, and

a third module for visual rendering the location information and sending the visually rendered location information to the end users based on the user preference mode of notification.

10. A method provided on software, hardware or a combination of software and hardware, comprising:

registering a publish subscribe format based on a user preference mode of notification; and

publishing location information of a mobile user to an end user using the publish subscribe format.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the publish subscribe format is an RSS or ATOM feed to visually render the location information of the mobile user.

12. The method of claim 10, further comprising charging the end user a fee for the location information, wherein the charging is provided by sending a charging record to a charging platform using diameter based Rf protocol.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the steps of claim 10 are offered by a service provider based on one of a fee and subscription basis

14. The method of claim 10, wherein the software, hardware or a combination of software and hardware are provided on a computer infrastructure, which is at least one of supported, deployed, maintained, and created by a service provider.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein the publish subscribe format is at least one of a SIP, SMS, Rich Site Summary (RSS) and ATOM feed.

16. The method of claim 10, wherein the publish subscribe format is user configurable.

17. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

registering the publish subscribe format with a profile manager;

requesting the location information from a location platform;

receiving the location information from the location platform;

sending the location information to a notification gateway, and

visually rendering the location information to end users.

18. A system implemented on computer program product comprising a computer usable medium having readable program code embodied in the medium, the system comprising:

a profile manager configured and structured to set up preferences of a mobile user including publish subscribe formats of location information of the mobile user;

a service application configured and structured to receive the location information of the mobile user from a location platform and send the location information to a notification gateway; and

a rendering agent configured and structured to visually render the location information to the end users based on the publish subscribe formats.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the rendering agent is a web server configured to visually render the location information in a tracking map.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein the service application is Parlay X.

21. The system of claim 18, wherein the profile manager sets user preferences to provide notifications to subscribing parties.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the user preferences include the publish subscribe formats including SMS, SIP, SMTP, Web Services, RSS Feeds and ATOM feed based notifications.

23. The system of claim 18, wherein the profile manager is implemented in a home subscriber server (HSS).

24. The system of claim 18, wherein the service application is configured and structured to send charging information to a charging platform using diameter protocol.
