Abstract

Systems, methods and apparatus are provided for utilizing a substantially condensed phase cryogenic fluid for the purpose of remediation and retrieval of, e.g., spilled crude oil and other “oil spill”-related products from marine/aquatic and terrestrial environments. In some implementations, systems and apparatus are provided for applying a substantially condensed phase cryogenic fluid to a volume of spilled oil, and further having structure for collecting the spilled oil. Some implementations are environmentally-neutral. Substances other than oil may be remediated as well.

Claims

1. A system for remediating an immiscible pollutant comprising:

a cryogenic fluid source adapted for providing a condensed-phase cryogenic fluid;

a cryogenic fluid transport structure coupled to the cryogenic fluid source adapted for transporting the cryogenic fluid;

a low pressure applicator coupled to the cryogenic fluid transport structure adapted for dispensing the cryogenic fluid in a substantially condensed phase;

a collector adapted for capturing at some of the immiscible pollutant after exposure to the cryogenic fluid; and

a storage structure, coupled to the collector.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the cryogenic fluid is liquefied nitrogen.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the cryogenic fluid is liquefied air.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the cryogenic fluid is liquefied helium.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the cryogenic fluid source comprises a multistage compressor.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the cryogenic fluid source comprises a cascade liquefaction system.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the cryogenic fluid source comprises a pump to pressurize the cryogenic fluid transport structure.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the cryogenic fluid source comprises a vacuum flask.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the cryogenic fluid transport structure is vacuum insulated.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the cryogenic fluid transport structure comprises a valve to control the rate of cryogenic fluid transport to the low pressure applicator.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein the pressure of cryogenic fluid within the cryogenic fluid transport structure is less than about 50 psi.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein the cryogenic fluid transport structure comprises a pressure relief valve.

13. The system of claim 1 wherein the cryogenic fluid transport structure comprises a keepfull.

14. The system of claim 1 wherein the low pressure applicator dispenses the cryogenic fluid at about atmospheric pressure.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein the low pressure applicator comprises a sparger bar.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein the sparger bar is constructed of a sintered metal.

17. The system of claim 16 wherein the metal comprises brass, bronze or stainless steel.

18. The system of claim 15 wherein the sparger bar is constructed of a sintered composite.

19. The system of claim 15 wherein the sparger bar is constructed of a sintered material comprising silicon carbide.

20. The system of claim 15 wherein the mean porosity of the sparger bar is between about 1 micron and 10 microns.

21. The system of claim 1 wherein the low pressure applicator comprises a spray bar comprising at least one nozzle.

22. The system of claim 21 further comprising means for adjusting an aperture size of at least one nozzle.

23. The system of claim 1 wherein the low pressure applicator comprises a drizzle bar comprising at least one hole array.

24. The system of claim 23 wherein the at least one hole array comprises holes having a diameter equal to or greater than about 0.1 millimeters.

25. The system of claim 1 comprising:

one or more sensors disposed proximate to the immiscible pollutant adapted to generate one or more data signals;

a controller coupled to the sensors, cryogenic fluid source and cryogenic fluid transport structure, wherein the controller is adapted to control any of the cryogenic fluid source or cryogenic fluid transport structure in response to the one or more data signals.

26. The system of claim 25 wherein the one or more sensors includes an infrared sensor.

27. The system of claim 25 wherein the one or more sensors includes an optoacoustic sensor.

28. The system of claim 25 wherein the one or more sensors includes a temperature sensor.

29. The system of claim 25 wherein the controller is adapted to adjust the fluid flow rate through the cryogenic fluid transport structure.

30. The system of claim 1 wherein the cryogenic fluid transport structure comprises one or more pressure release valves or phase separators adapted to open at a predetermined threshold pressure.

31. The system of claim 1 wherein the low pressure applicator and cryogenic fluid transport structure are arranged such that the cryogenic fluid does not reach its saturation point within the fluid transport structure.

32. The system of claim 1 wherein the pressure within the low pressure applicator is at approximately atmospheric pressure.

33. The system of claim 1 wherein the low pressure applicator dispenses cryogenic fluid in droplets.

34. The system of claim 1 wherein the pollutant is located in or on an aqueous volume of liquid, wherein the applicator means causes at least part of the liquid to undergo a transition to an amorphous solid phase.

35. A system for applying a cryogenic fluid to a pollutant, the system comprising:

a cryogenic fluid transport structure coupled to a cryogenic fluid source;

applicator means for dispensing the cryogenic fluid in a substantially condensed phase, the applicator means coupled to the cryogenic fluid transport structure; and

a collector adapted for capturing at least some of the pollutant after exposure to the cryogenic fluid.

36. The system of claim 35 wherein the pollutant is located in or on an aqueous volume of liquid, the pollutant being substantially immiscible in the liquid, wherein the applicator means causes at least part of the liquid to undergo a transition to an amorphous solid phase.

37. The system of claim 35 wherein the pressure within the applicator means is at approximately atmospheric pressure.

38. The system of claim 35 comprising:

a sensor disposed proximate to the pollutant adapted to generate one or more data signals; and

a controller coupled to the sensor and at least one of the cryogenic fluid source, applicator means and cryogenic fluid transport structure, wherein the controller is adapted to control at least one of the coupled cryogenic fluid source, applicator means and cryogenic fluid transport structure in response to the one or more data signals.

39. A system for applying a cryogenic fluid to a pollutant, the system comprising:

a cryogenic fluid source;

transport means for transporting the cryogenic fluid from the cryogenic fluid source such that the cryogenic fluid does not reach its saturation point;

an applicator coupled to the transport means, the applicator adapted for dispensing the cryogenic fluid in a substantially condensed phase; and

a collector adapted for capturing at least some of the pollutant.

40. The system of claim 39 wherein the pollutant is located in or on an aqueous volume of liquid, the pollutant being substantially immiscible in the liquid, wherein the applicator causes at least part of the liquid to undergo a transition to an amorphous solid phase.

41. The system of claim 39 wherein the pressure within the applicator is at approximately atmospheric pressure.

42. The system of claim 39 comprising:

one or more sensors disposed proximate to the pollutant adapted to generate one or more data signals; and

a controller coupled to the one or more sensors and at least one of the cryogenic fluid source, transport means and applicator, wherein the controller is adapted to control at least one of the coupled cryogenic fluid source, transport means and applicator in response to the one or more data signals.

43. A system for applying a cryogenic fluid to a pollutant, the system comprising:

means for transporting cryogenic fluid from a cryogenic fluid source such that the cryogenic fluid is substantially maintained in the condensed phase;

means for dispensing the cryogenic fluid in a substantially condensed phase, the means for dispensing coupled to the means for transporting; and

a collector adapted for capturing at least some of the pollutant.

44. The system of claim 43 wherein the pollutant is located in or on an aqueous volume of liquid, the pollutant being substantially immiscible in the liquid, wherein the means for dispensing causes at least part of the liquid to undergo a transition to an amorphous solid phase.

45. The system of claim 43 wherein the pressure within the means for dispensing is at approximately atmospheric pressure.

46. The system of claim 43 comprising:

one or more sensors disposed proximate to the pollutant adapted to generate one or more data signals; and

a controller coupled to the one or more sensors and at least one of the means for transporting and means for dispensing, wherein the controller is adapted to control at least one of the coupled means for transporting and means for dispensing in response to the one or more data signals.

47. A system for applying a cryogenic fluid to a pollutant, the system comprising:

a cryogenic fluid source adapted for providing a condensed-phase cryogenic fluid;

a cryogenic fluid transport structure coupled to the cryogenic fluid source adapted for transporting the cryogenic fluid;

a low pressure applicator coupled to the cryogenic fluid transport structure adapted for dispensing the cryogenic fluid in a substantially condensed phase; and

a collector adapted for capturing at some of the immiscible pollutant.

48. The system of claim 47 wherein the pollutant is located in or on an aqueous volume of liquid, the pollutant being substantially immiscible in the liquid, wherein the low pressure applicator causes at least part of the liquid to undergo a transition to an amorphous solid phase.

49. The system of claim 47 wherein the pressure within the low pressure applicator is at approximately atmospheric pressure.

50. The system of claim 47 comprising:

one or more sensors disposed proximate to the pollutant adapted to generate one or more data signals; and

a controller coupled to the one or more sensors and at least one of the cryogenic fluid source, cryogenic fluid transport structure and low pressure applicator, wherein the controller is adapted to control at least one of the coupled cryogenic fluid source, cryogenic fluid transport structure and low pressure applicator in response to the one or more data signals.

51. A system for applying a cryogenic fluid to a pollutant, the system comprising:

a cryogenic fluid source;

a cryogenic fluid transport structure coupled to the cryogenic fluid source adapted for transporting the cryogenic fluid at less than or equal to about 50 psi;

a low pressure applicator coupled to the cryogenic fluid transport structure adapted for dispensing the cryogenic fluid in a substantially condensed phase; and

a collector adapted for capturing at some of the immiscible pollutant after exposure to the cryogenic fluid.

52. The system of claim 51 wherein the pollutant is located in or on an aqueous volume of liquid, the pollutant being substantially immiscible in the liquid, wherein the low pressure applicator causes at least part of the liquid to undergo a transition to an amorphous solid phase.

53. The system of claim 51 wherein the pressure within the low pressure applicator is at approximately atmospheric pressure.

54. The system of claim 51 comprising:

one or more sensors disposed proximate to the pollutant adapted to generate one or more data signals; and

a controller coupled to the one or more sensors and at least one of the cryogenic fluid source, cryogenic fluid transport structure and low pressure applicator, wherein the controller is adapted to control at least one of the coupled cryogenic fluid source, cryogenic fluid transport structure and low pressure applicator in response to the one or more data signals.

55. A system for applying a cryogenic fluid to a pollutant, the system comprising:

a cryogenic fluid source;

a cryogenic fluid transport structure coupled to the cryogenic fluid source and adapted for transporting the cryogenic fluid at less than or equal to about 50 psi;

applicator means for dispensing the cryogenic fluid in at approximately atmospheric pressure, the applicator means coupled to the cryogenic fluid transport structure; and

a collector adapted for capturing at least some of the pollutant.

56. The system of claim 55 wherein the pollutant is located in or on an aqueous volume of liquid, the pollutant being substantially immiscible in the liquid, wherein the applicator means causes at least part of the liquid to undergo a transition to an amorphous solid phase.

57. The system of claim 55 wherein the pressure within the low pressure applicator is at approximately atmospheric pressure.

58. The system of claim 55 comprising:

one or more sensors disposed proximate to the pollutant adapted to generate one or more data signals; and

a controller coupled to the one or more sensors and at least one of the cryogenic fluid source, cryogenic fluid transport structure and applicator means, wherein the controller is adapted to control at least one of the coupled cryogenic fluid source, cryogenic fluid transport structure and applicator means in response to the one or more data signals.

59. A system for applying a cryogenic fluid to a pollutant, the system comprising:

a cryogenic fluid source;

a cryogenic fluid transport structure coupled to the cryogenic fluid source; and

applicator means for dispensing the cryogenic fluid at about atmospheric pressure, the applicator means coupled to the cryogenic fluid transport structure; and

a collector adapted for capturing at least some of the pollutant.

60. The system of claim 59 wherein the pollutant is located in or on an aqueous volume of liquid, the pollutant being substantially immiscible in the liquid, wherein the applicator means causes at least part of the liquid to undergo a transition to an amorphous solid phase.

61. The system of claim 59 comprising means for maintaining the pressure of the cryogenic fluid in the cryogenic fluid transport structure at less than or equal to about 50 psi.

62. The system of claim 59 comprising:

one or more sensors disposed proximate to the pollutant adapted to generate one or more data signals; and

a controller coupled to the one or more sensors and at least one of the cryogenic fluid source, cryogenic fluid transport structure and applicator means, wherein the controller is adapted to control at least one of the coupled cryogenic fluid source, cryogenic fluid transport structure and applicator means in response to the one or more data signals.

63. A system for applying a cryogenic fluid to a pollutant, the system comprising:

transport means for transporting a cryogenic fluid substantially in the condensed phase;

applicator means for dispensing the cryogenic fluid at about atmospheric pressure, the applicator means coupled to the transport means; and

a collector adapted for capturing at least some of the pollutant.

64. The system of claim 63 wherein the pollutant is located in or on an aqueous volume of liquid, the pollutant being substantially immiscible in the liquid, wherein the applicator means causes at least part of the liquid to undergo a transition to an amorphous solid phase.

65. The system of claim 63 wherein the transport means maintains the pressure of the cryogenic fluid at less than or equal to about 50 psi.

66. The system of claim 63 comprising:

one or more sensors disposed proximate to the pollutant adapted to generate one or more data signals; and

a controller coupled to the one or more sensors and at least one of the transport means and applicator means, wherein the controller is adapted to control at least one of the coupled transport means and applicator means in response to the one or more data signals.
