Abstract

This document discusses, among other things, a system and method for optimizing a sleep therapy using a closed loop neuromodulator. A first sleep disorder can be detected using first activity information, and a first stimulus can be provided, in response to the first sleep disorder event, using a set of stimulation parameters. The first sleep disorder can be detected using second activity information, at least one of the set of stimulation parameters can be adjusted, and a second stimulus can be provided using the adjusted set of stimulus parameters, wherein the second stimulus has more energy than the first stimulus.

Claims

1. A system for optimizing sleep therapy for a patient, the system comprising:

a sensor configured to detect activity information from the patient;

a closed loop neuromodulator configured to receive first activity information from the sensor, to detect a first sleep disorder event using the first activity information, to provide, in response to the first sleep disorder event, a first stimulus using a set of stimulus parameters;

wherein the closed loop neuromodulator is configured to receive second activity information from the sensor after providing the first stimulus, to detect the first sleep disorder event using the second activity information, to adjust at least one parameter of the set of stimulus parameters, and to provide a second stimulus using the adjusted set of stimulus parameters;

a transducer configured to deliver the first stimulus and the second stimulus the patient to interrupt the detected first sleep disorder event;

wherein the first stimulus is configured to not interrupt the first sleep disorder event; and

wherein the second stimulus is configured to provide more energy to the patient than the first stimulus.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the set of stimulus parameters includes at least one of a stimulus level, a stimulus type, a stimulus rate, a stimulus frequency, or a stimulus duration.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the closed loop neuromodulator is configured to adjust the stimulus type of the second stimulus to provide more energy to the patient than the first stimulus.

4. The system of claim 2, wherein the closed loop neuromodulator is configured to adjust the stimulus level of the second stimulus to provide more energy to the patient than the first stimulus.

5. The system of claim 2, wherein the closed loop neuromodulator is configured to adjust the stimulus rate of the second stimulus to provide more energy to the patient than the first stimulus.

6. The system of claim 2, wherein the closed loop neuromodulator is configured to adjust the stimulus duration of the second stimulus to provide more energy to the patient than the first stimulus.

7. The system of claim 2, wherein the closed loop neuromodulator is configured to adjust the stimulus frequency of the second stimulus to provide more energy to the patient than the first stimulus.

8. The system of claim 2, wherein the closed loop neuromodulator is configured to adjust the set of stimulus parameters using one or more stimulus parameters from a previous sleep disorder event.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the closed loop neuromodulator is configured to receive information about the set of stimulus parameters from a user.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the first sleep disorder event includes an apnea event.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor includes at least one of a thermocouple, a thermistor, an air pressure transducer, an electrode, a respiratory effort belt or a pyro/piezoelectric sensor.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the transducer includes at least one of an acoustic transducer, a tactile mechanical agitator, an ocular stimulator, an electric stimulator, a thermal stimulator or an ultrasonic stimulator configured to modulate an audible signal onto an ultrasonic sound carrier.

13. A method for optimizing a sleep therapy using a closed loop neuromodulator, the method comprising:

receiving first activity information;

detecting a first sleep disorder event using the first activity information;

providing, in response to the first sleep disorder event, a first stimulus using a set of stimulus parameters, the set of stimulus parameters configured to not interrupt the first sleep disorder event;

receiving second activity information after providing the first stimulus;

detecting the first sleep disorder event using the second activity information;

adjusting at least one parameter of the set of stimulus parameters, in response to the first sleep disorder event detected using the second activity information; and

providing a second stimulus using the adjusted set of stimulus parameters, the second stimulus having more energy than the first stimulus.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein adjusting at least one parameter includes adjusting a stimulus type of the second stimulus to provide more energy than the first stimulus.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein adjusting at least one parameter includes adjusting a stimulus level of the second stimulus to provide more energy than the first stimulus.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein adjusting at least one parameter includes adjusting a stimulus rate of the second stimulus to provide more energy than the first stimulus.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein adjusting at least one parameter includes adjusting a stimulus duration of the second stimulus to provide more energy than the first stimulus.

18. The method of claim 13, wherein adjusting at least one parameter includes adjusting a stimulus frequency of the second stimulus to provide more energy than the first stimulus.

19. The method of claim 13, wherein receiving first activity information includes receiving respiratory information;

and

wherein detecting a first sleep disorder event includes detecting an indication of abnormal respiration using the respiration information.

20. The method of claim 13, wherein detecting a first sleep disorder event include detecting a sleep apnea event.
