Abstract

Systems and methods for crossing stenosis, partial occlusions, or complete occlusions within a body lumen. The systems generally include an elongate member such as a hollow guidewire that houses a rotatable and translatable drive shaft. The drive shaft typically has a distal portion that is advanced to create a path in the occlusive material that is large enough to allow the hollow guidewire to cross the occlusive material.

Claims

1. A guidewire system for passing through a stenosis in a blood vessel, said guidewire comprising:

a hollow body including a coil and having a proximal end, a distal end, and an axial lumen therethrough;

a reinforcing wire connected along an axial inner surface of the coil, wherein the reinforcing wire is reshapeable allowing a user to deflect the distal end without impeding the lumen through the coil; and

a rotatable drive shaft within the axial lumen of the hollow body and exiting through the coil.

2. A guidewire system as in claim 1, wherein the wire is a flattened strip of stainless steel.

3. A guidewire system as in claim 1, wherein the wire is soldered to the coil.

4. A guidewire system, as in claim 3, wherein the wire is soldered to the distal end of the coil.

5. A guidewire system, as in claim 1, wherein the coil extends the entire length of the hollow body.

6. A guidewire system as in claim 5, wherein the hollow body comprises an inner coil and an outer coil.
