Abstract

We have disclosed a modular personal network (MPN) that includes multiple devices that may be worn, carried, or used in close proximity to a user. The devices communicate wirelessly. Functions of the MPN may be modified by adding or removing components. The MPN may communicate with a personal computer. General purpose devices may include a control unit, a display, a user input, and an audio output. The MPN may provide a variety of functions, including time, communication, entertainment, organization, guidance, athletic, medical, travel, outdoors, identity, security, and military.

Claims

1. A display unit designed to be worn by a user on the radial side of the user'"'"'s wrist or the dorsal side of the user'"'"'s hand and to display items selected from the group consisting of text characters, graphics, and video.

2. The display unit of claim 1 further configured at an optimal angle to be viewed while running without turning the wrist.

3. The display unit of claim 1 further configured to be wearable on either the left or right wrist or hand.

4. The display unit of claim 1 further configured with the top of the display oriented toward the fingertips.

5. The display unit of claim 1 further configured with the top of the display oriented toward the back of the wrist.

6. The display unit of claim 1 further configured with the top of the display oriented at an angle between the fingertips and the back of the wrist.

7. The display unit of claim 1 wherein the orientation of the display can be modified by the user.

8. The display unit of claim 1 further comprising a wireless receiver, wherein the wireless receiver receives information to be displayed by the display unit.

9. The display unit of claim 1 further comprising a wireless receiver, wherein the wireless receiver receives commands from a user control device worn or carried by the user.

10. The display unit of claim 1 further comprising a mount, wherein the mount is used to attach the display unit to the user'"'"'s hand or wrist.

11. The display unit of claim 10 wherein the mount is configured to allow the user to easily replace the display unit with another.

12. The display unit of claim 10 wherein the mount is configured to allow the user to easily move the display unit to another position.

13. The display unit of claim 10 wherein the mount is configured to allow the user to easily change the orientation of the display unit.

14. The display unit of claim 10 wherein the mount comprises a wristband.

15. The display unit of claim 10 wherein the mount comprises a partial glove.

16. The display unit of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of mounts, wherein one of the plurality of mounts is used to attach the display unit to the user'"'"'s hand or wrist, and wherein the user can choose among the mounts.

17. A method of providing a conveniently viewable display of information to a user comprising mounting a display unit on the radial side of the user'"'"'s wrist or the dorsal side of the user'"'"'s hand and displaying text characters, graphics, or video on the display unit, wherein the user does not have to turn his wrist or arm to view the information.
