Abstract

An apparatus and a method for accessing data from a server. In one embodiment, data referred by a Universal Resource Identifier (URI) is mounted on a file system. The mounted data can then be operated on using the file system. To mount the data referred by the URI, a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) fragment of the URI is determined. An identifier on the file system is generated based on the URL fragment. Data referred by the URI is mapped to the file system using the identifier.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

mounting data referred by a Universal Resource Identifier (URI) on a file system; and

operating on the data using the file system.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 wherein mounting further comprises:

determining a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) fragment of the URI;

generating an identifier on the file system based on the URL fragment; and

mapping data referred by the URI to the file system using the identifier.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 wherein mounting further comprises:

determining a URL fragment of the URI;

mangling the URL fragment;

generating an identifier on the file system based on the mangled URL fragment; and

mapping data referred by the URI to the file system using the identifier.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 wherein mounting further comprises:

determining a URL fragment of the URI;

converting the URI to an identifier on the file system; and

mapping data referred by the URI to the file system using the identifier.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 further comprising:

converting the URI using a table lookup.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 further comprising:

converting the URI with a conversion algorithm.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 further comprising:

converting the URI to one or more file names on the file system.

8. A client comprising:

an application configured to communicate with a server;

a URI file system module coupled to the application, the URI file system module configured to mount data referred by a Universal Resource Identifier (URI) on a file system; and

an operating system coupled to the URI file system module, the operating system configured to operate on the data using the file system.

9. The client of claim 8 wherein the URI file system is configured to determine a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) fragment of the URI, to generate an identifier on the file system based on the URL fragment, and to map data referred by the URI to the file system using the identifier.

10. The client of claim 8 wherein the URI file system is configured to determine a URL fragment of the URI, to mangle the URL fragment, to generate an identifier on the file system based on the mangled URL fragment, and to map data referred by the URI to the file system using the identifier.

11. The client of claim 8 wherein the URI file system is configured to determine a URL fragment of the URL to convert the URI to an identifier on the file system, and to map data referred by the URI to the file system using the identifier.

12. The client of claim 11 wherein the URI file system is configured to convert the URI using a table lookup.

13. The client of claim 11 wherein the URI file system is configured to convert the URI with a conversion algorithm.

14. The client of claim 8 wherein the URI file system is configured to convert the URI to one or more file names on the file system.

15. An article of manufacture comprising:

a computer-accessible storage medium including data that, when accessed by a computer, cause the computer to perform a method comprising;

mounting data referred by a Universal Resource Identifier (URI) on a file system; and

operating on the data using the file system.

16. The article of manufacture of claim 15 wherein mounting further comprises:

determining a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) fragment of the URI;

generating an identifier on the file system based on the URL fragment; and

mapping data referred by the URI to the file system using the identifier.

17. The article of manufacture of claim 15 wherein mounting further comprises:

determining a URL fragment of the URI;

mangling the URL fragment;

generating an identifier on the file system based on the mangled URL fragment; and

mapping data referred by the URI to the file system using the identifier.

18. The article of manufacture of claim 15 wherein mounting further comprises:

determining a URL fragment of the URI;

converting the URI to an identifier on the file system; and

mapping data referred by the URI to the file system using the identifier.

19. The article of manufacture of claim 18 wherein the method further comprises:

converting the URI using a table lookup or a conversion algorithm.

20. The article of manufacture of claim 15 wherein the method further comprises:

converting the URI to one or more file names on the file system.
