Abstract

We have disclosed a modular personal network (MPN) that includes multiple devices that may be worn, carried, or used in close proximity to a user. The devices communicate wirelessly. Functions of the MPN may be modified by adding or removing components. The MPN may communicate with a personal computer. General purpose devices may include a control unit, a display, a user input, and an audio output. The MPN may provide a variety of functions, including time, communication, entertainment, organization, guidance, athletic, medical, travel, outdoors, identity, security, and military.

Claims

1. A mobile position logging system configured to be worn by a user comprising:

(a) a position monitoring device,

(b) a separate input device for creating annotations,

(c) a memory for storing position or speed data collected from the position monitoring device and input data collected from the input device, and

(d) a communication device for uploading the collected position or speed data and input data from the memory to a personal computer.

2. The mobile position logging system of claim 1 wherein the position or speed data comprises elevation or elevation change data.

3. The mobile position logging system of claim 1 further configured to make the uploaded position or speed data and input data available over the Internet.

4. The mobile position logging system of claim 1 further configured to display the uploaded position or speed data and input data using the personal computer.

5. The mobile position logging system of claim 1 wherein the annotations comprise voice, text, or drawings.

6. The mobile position logging system of claim 1 wherein the annotations comprise video or a still photograph.

7. The mobile position logging system of claim 1 further comprising a clock and further configured to tag the collected, stored, and uploaded data with a time from the clock.

8. The mobile position logging system of claim 1 further comprising a database and further configured to allow the user to tag the collected, stored, and uploaded data with an entry from the database.

9. A data-logging device configured to be worn or carried by a user comprising a wireless receiver for receiving data from a plurality of other devices worn or carried by the user and a memory device configured to store the data received by the wireless receiver.

10. The data-logging device of claim 9 further configured to upload the stored data to a personal computer.

11. The data-logging device of claim 9 wherein one of the plurality of other devices comprises a heart rate monitor.

12. The data-logging device of claim 9 wherein one of the plurality of other devices comprises a global positioning system monitor.

13. The data-logging device of claim 9 wherein one of the plurality of other devices comprises an elevation monitor.

14. The data-logging device of claim 9 wherein one of the plurality of other devices comprises a voice input device.

15. The data-logging device of claim 9 wherein one of the plurality of other devices comprises a digital camera.

16. The data-logging device of claim 9 wherein one of the plurality of other devices comprises an accelerometer.

17. The data-logging device of claim 9 wherein one of the plurality of other devices comprises a cadence monitor.

18. The data-logging device of claim 9 further configured to be able to store data received from a device designed after the manufacture of the data-logging device.

19. A method of collecting mobile position from a user comprising:

(e) collecting position or speed information in a device worn or carried by the user,

(f) collecting user entered annotations from a separate device worn or carried by the user,

(g) storing the collected position or speed data and the user entered annotations, and

(h) uploading the collected position or speed data and user entered annotations to a personal computer.
