OBLONG CROSS-SECTIONAL TISSUE FIXATION PEG
First Claim
1. A tissue fixation device comprising a proximal end and a distal end and defining a longitudinal axis from the proximal end to the distal end, the tissue fixation device further defining a first cross sectional area along at least a portion of and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the first cross sectional area defining a periphery and including a first aspect having a first length and a second aspect that is perpendicular to the first aspect and having a second length, wherein the first length is greater than the second length such that the cross sectional area is oblong.

Abstract
Disclosed are fixation devices that can be utilized to approximate and hold a soft tissue in, at, or near a bony insertion site. Disclosed devices can define an oblong cross-section, and can include ribs defining sharp edges on the periphery of one aspect of the cross section that can tightly fix the device to surrounding bone so as to avoid pull out of the device. Devices can also include ribs defining rounded ridges on the periphery of a second, perpendicular aspect of the cross section that can allow soft tissue or a portion of an approximation device, for instance a soft tissue graft or cellular scaffolding material, to be fixed within a bone without damage to the soft tissue.

24. A method for repairing a soft tissue comprising:
-
passing a tissue approximation device that has been attached to a soft tissue through a transverse aperture of a fixation device, the fixation device defining a longitudinal axis between a proximal end and a distal end, the transverse aperture being generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the tissue fixation device further defining a cross sectional perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the cross sectional area defining a periphery and including a first aspect having a first length and a second aspect that is perpendicular to the first aspect and having a second length, wherein the first length is greater than the second length such that the cross sectional area is oblong; placing the tissue approximation device on a first portion of the fixation device, the first portion of the fixation device including a terminus of the second aspect; and inserting the fixation device into a bone hole or bone slot such that the tissue approximation device is between the fixation device and the tissue of the bone hole or bone slot. - View Dependent Claims (25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32)
