Abstract

A method and a system are provided for wirelessly connecting two data devices. A user intending to connect the devices issues a connect activation command and then moves one device toward the other device along a connection vector. Wireless communication connection is established through Ultra WideBand (UWB) protocol when the two devices are in range of each other. The wireless connection is terminated when the one device is moved along a displacement vector.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

activating a connection mode in a first device for connection to a second device;

moving the first device towards the second device along a connect motion vector;

sensing when the first device is within a predetermined distance of the second device; and

in response to the sensing step, establishing a wireless connection between the first device and the second device.

2. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the first device is one of a mobile telephone and a PDA device.

3. A method as recited in claim 2, wherein the second device is a laptop computer.

4. A method as recited in claim 1, further comprising disabling the wireless connection by moving the first device along a disconnect motion vector in a direction opposite to the connect motion vector.

5. A method as recited in claim 4, wherein the disabling step comprises:

determining a degree of match between the connect motion vector and the disconnect motion vector; and

detecting that the degree of match exceeds a predetermined threshold.

6. A method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:

moving the first device along a disconnect motion vector in a direction opposite to the connect motion vector;

determining a degree of match between the connect motion vector and the disconnect motion vector; and

indicating that the degree of match is below a predetermined first threshold level and above a second threshold level.

7. A method as recited in claim 2, wherein the sensing step is performed by the first device.

8. A method as recited in claim 3, wherein the sensing step is performed by the second device.

9. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the establishing step comprises applying Ultra WideBand (UWB) protocol.

10. A method of claim 1, wherein the predetermined distance is related to the range of a wireless protocol device.

11. Apparatus comprising:

a first device comprising;

a controller,

a user input device coupled to the controller, a motion sensor coupled to the controller, and a radio transmitter; and

a second device;

wherein;

the controller is responsive to a connect command received from the user input device to process input received from the motion sensor and detect distance between the first and second devices.

12. Apparatus as recited in claim 11, wherein the controller is configured to activate wireless communication connection between the first and second devices upon detection that the distance between the first and second devices is within a predetermined threshold.

13. Apparatus as recited in claim 12, wherein the motion sensor comprises an accelerometer.

14. Apparatus as recited in claim 11, wherein the first device is a mobile communication device.

15. Apparatus as recited in claim 11, wherein the second device is a laptop computer.

16. Apparatus as recited in claim 12, wherein the controller is configured to terminate the wireless communication in response to detection that the first device is moved along a disconnect motion vector.

17. Apparatus as recited in claim 11, wherein the second device comprises a radar sensor configured to sense movement of the first device.

18. Apparatus as recited in claim 17, wherein the radar sensor comprises a pulse generator configured to emit pulses that are compliant with UWB wireless protocol.

19. Apparatus as recited in claim 11, wherein the first and second devices are data devices.

20. Apparatus as recited in claim 14, wherein the user input device comprises a manually operable key.
