Abstract

A method and system for use in an ocular surgical procedure is provided. The design includes a handpiece having an ultrasonically vibrating tip operational within a plurality of operating modes including a first operating mode and a sensing device, such as a vacuum pressure sensor. A controller is connected to the handpiece and sensing device and is configured to receive data from the sensing device and adjust at least one operational parameter (time/duty cycle of operation, power during operation) associated with the first operating mode and adjust at least one parameter associated with another operating mode based on the data received from the sensing device. Operational modes may include multiple longitudinal or non-longitudinal modes (torsional, transversal, etc.) or combinations of longitudinal and/or non-longitudinal modes.

Claims

1. A method for controlling an ultrasonically driven handpiece employable in an ocular surgical procedure, comprising:

operating the ultrasonically driven handpiece in a first tip displacement mode according to a first set of operational parameters; and

altering operation of the ultrasonically driven handpiece to employ a second tip displacement mode using a second set of operational parameters;

wherein said altering comprises measuring an ocular surgical related parameter and dynamically selecting operational parameters based on the ocular surgical related parameter, wherein dynamically selecting comprises changing the first set of operational parameters for the first tip displacement mode relative to the second set of operational parameters for the second tip displacement mode.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first tip displacement mode comprises longitudinal motion and the second tip displacement mode comprises non-longitudinal motion.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the first tip displacement mode and second tip displacement mode both comprise longitudinal motion.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first tip displacement mode and second tip displacement mode both comprise non-longitudinal motion.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein said non-longitudinal motion comprises a transversal motion.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein said longitudinal motion is interleaved with the transversal motion.

7. The method of claim 3, wherein said altering comprises measuring vacuum values and dynamically enabling alteration of the first set of parameters relative to the second set of parameters based on the vacuum values measured.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein increasing the first set of operational parameters causes a resultant decrease in the second set of operational parameters.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein operational parameters comprise at least one from a group including power level, on time, off time, duty cycle, pulse rate, and frequency.

10. The method of claim 2, wherein varying the first set of operational parameters and varying the second set of operational parameters comprises varying the ratio of time allocated to longitudinal cutting relative to transversal cutting.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein varying the ratio of time comprises increasing time allocated to longitudinal operation while proportionally decreasing time allocated to transversal operation.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein varying the ratio of time comprises a decrease in time allocated to longitudinal operation while proportionally increasing time allocated to transversal operation.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the ocular surgical related parameter comprises an occlusion such that operational parameters are dynamically selected based on having sensed the occlusion.

14. An apparatus configured for use in an ocular surgical procedure, comprising:

a handpiece having an ultrasonically vibrating tip supporting a plurality of operating modes including a first operating mode;

a sensing device; and

a controller connected to the handpiece and sensing device configured to receive data from the sensing device and adjust at least one parameter associated with the first operating mode and dynamically select at least one parameter associated with a second operating mode based on the data received from the sensing device.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein one of the operating modes comprises a transversal operating mode.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the first operating mode comprises a longitudinal operating mode and the controller interleaves operation of said longitudinal operating mode with the transversal operating mode.

17. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the the sensing device comprises a vacuum sensor enabling dynamic selection of longitudinal mode parameters at the expense of non-longitudinal mode parameters based on data received from the vacuum sensor.

18. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein dynamically selecting first operating mode parameters at the expense of second operating mode parameters comprises varying a ratio of performance allocated to first operating mode operation relative to every other mode of operation.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein a non-longitudinal mode of operation is available, and wherein varying the ratio of performance comprises increasing performance allocated to the first operating mode while proportionally decreasing performance allocated to the non-longitudinal mode.

20. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein a non-longitudinal mode of operation is available, and wherein varying the ratio of performance comprises decreasing performance allocated to the first operating mode while proportionally increasing performance allocated to the non-longitudinal mode.

21. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein one of the operating modes comprises a torsional operating mode.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the controller interleaves operation of said first operating mode with the torsional operating mode.

23. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the data received from the sensing device comprises data indicating an occlusion such that dynamically selecting at least one parameter occurs based on having sensed the occlusion.

24. A method for controlling an ultrasonically driven handpiece employable in an ocular surgical procedure, comprising:

operating the ultrasonically driven handpiece in a first operating motion according to a first set of operational parameters; and

altering operation of the ultrasonically driven handpiece using data received from a sensing device by employing a second operating motion according to a second set of operational parameters;

wherein said altering operation comprises dynamically setting operational parameters for the first operating motion relative to the second operating motion based on data sensed by the sensing device.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the first operating motion is a longitudinal motion and the second operating motion is a non-longitudinal motion.

26. The method of claim 24, wherein the first operating motion is generally the same as the second operating motion.

27. The method of claim 24, wherein the first operating motion is a non-longitudinal motion and the second operating motion is also non-longitudinal.

28. The method of claim 25, wherein said non-longitudinal motion comprises a transversal motion.

29. The method of claim 25, wherein said longitudinal motion is interleaved with the transversal motion.

30. The method of claim 24, wherein said sensing device comprises a vacuum sensor to dynamically select longitudinal motion parameters relative to non-longitudinal motion parameters based on a sensed vacuum level.

31. The method of claim 24, wherein operational parameters comprise at least one from a group including power level, on time, off time, duty cycle, pulse rate, and frequency.

32. The method of claim 25, wherein said non-longitudinal motion comprises a torsional motion.

33. The method of claim 24, wherein data received from a sensing device comprises data associated with an occlusion such that said altering operation occurs based on sensing the occlusion.
