Abstract

Multiple-Input-Single-Output (MISO) amplification and associated VPA control algorithms are provided herein. According to embodiments of the present invention, MISO amplifiers driven by VPA control algorithms outperform conventional outphasing amplifiers, including cascades of separate branch amplifiers using conventional power combiner technologies. MISO amplifiers can be operated at enhanced efficiencies over the entire output power dynamic range by blending the control of the power source, source impedances, bias levels, outphasing, and branch amplitudes. These blending constituents are combined to provide an optimized transfer characteristic function.

Claims

1. A method for at least power amplification, comprising:

receiving in-phase (I) and quadrature-phase (Q) information;

generating a plurality of control signals from the received I and Q information; and

controlling a transimpedance node according to the plurality of control signals to generate a desired waveform of desired power and frequency at an output of the transimpedance node.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the received I and Q information corresponds to a signal constellation.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the signal constellation is imposed on a radio frequency (RF) complex envelope of the desired power at the output of the transimpedance node.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said generating step comprises generating the plurality of control signals according to a complex envelope of the desired waveform.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein said generating step comprises generating a plurality of substantially constant envelope signals, and wherein said controlling the comprises combining the plurality of substantially constant envelope signals with minimal isolation.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of control signals include amplitude signals, phase signals, and bias signals.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of control signals include amplitude signals and phase signals.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of control signals include amplitude signals and bias signals.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of control signals include phase signals and bias signals.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of control signals include amplitude signals, phase signals, bias signals and power supply signals.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of control signals include any combination of amplitude signals, phase signals, bias signals and power supply signals.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of control signals include any combination of outphasing, bias control, power control, amplitude control, and impedance control signals.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein said controlling step comprises controlling an energy flow from a power supply coupled to the transimpedance node to a load coupled to the output of the transimpedance node.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein controlling said energy flow comprises modifying a spectral content of energy as it flows from the power supply to the load.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein said controlling step comprises modifying a spectral content of energy as it flows from a power supply coupled to the transimpedance node to a load coupled to the output of the transimpedance node.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein said controlling step comprises controlling an energy flow from a power supply coupled to the transimpedance node to an antenna coupled to the output of the transimpedance node.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein said controlling step comprises controlling the transimpedance node to expedite energy transfer from a power supply coupled to the transimpedance node to a load coupled to the output of the transimpedance node.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein said controlling step comprises controlling one or more switched input resistances of the transimpedance node.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein said controlling step comprises controlling one or more switched input resistances of the transimpedance node to control an energy flow from a power supply coupled to the transimpedance node to a load coupled to the output of the transimpedance node.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein said controlling step comprises controlling the transimpedance node to minimize energy transfer from input branches of the transimpedance node to the output of the transimpedance node.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein said controlling step comprises non-linearly processing one or more of the plurality of control signals.

22. The method of claim 1, wherein said controlling step comprises varying a class of operation of the transimpedance node.

23. The method of claim 1, wherein said controlling step comprises varying the plurality of control signals to generate a variable impedance at the transimpedance node.

24. The method of claim 1, wherein said controlling step comprises varying the plurality of control signals to cause steering currents to enter or leave the transimpedance node.

25. The method of claim 1, wherein the transimpedance node combines a plurality of input currents according to the plurality of control signals to generate the desired waveform at the output of the transimpedance node.

26. The method of claim 1, wherein the transimpedance node combines a plurality of branch input currents into a single output current.

27. The method of claim 1, wherein the transimpedance node is functionally similar to a variable load line.

28. The method of claim 1, wherein the transimpedance node is functionally similar to a dynamically variable load line.

29. The method of claim 1, wherein the transimpedance node is functionally similar to a variable impedance.

30. The method of claim 1, wherein the transimpedance node is functionally similar to a multiple-input single-output (MISO) amplifier.

31. The method of claim 1, wherein the desired waveform includes a modulated radio frequency (RF) signal.

32. The method of claim 1, wherein the desired waveform includes a modulated radio frequency (RF) signal, and wherein the modulated RF signal is first generated at the output of the transimpedance node.

33. The method of claim 1, wherein the desired waveform is first generated at the desired power at the output of the transimpedance node.

34. An apparatus for at least power amplification, comprising:

input circuitry that receives in-phase (I) and quadrature-phase (Q) information and generates a plurality of control signals from the received I and Q information; and

a transimpedance node, controlled by the plurality of control signals, that generates a desired waveform of desired power and frequency at an output of the transimpedance node.

35. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the received I and Q information corresponds to a signal constellation.

36. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein the signal constellation is imposed on a radio frequency (RF) complex envelope of the desired power at the output of the transimpedance node.

37. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the input circuitry generates the plurality of control signals according to a complex envelope of the desired waveform.

38. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the input circuitry generates a plurality of substantially constant envelope signals, and wherein the transimpedance node combines the plurality of substantially constant envelope signals with minimal isolation.

39. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals include amplitude signals, phase signals, and bias signals.

40. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals include amplitude signals and phase signals.

41. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals include amplitude signals and bias signals.

42. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals include phase signals and bias signals.

43. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals include amplitude signals, phase signals, bias signals and power supply signals.

44. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals include any combination of amplitude signals, phase signals, bias signals and power supply signals.

45. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals include any combination of outphasing, bias control, power control, amplitude control, and impedance control signals.

46. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals control the transimpedance node to control an energy flow from a power supply coupled to the transimpedance node to a load coupled to the output of the transimpedance node.

47. The apparatus of claim 46 wherein the transimpedance node modifies a spectral content of energy as it flows from the power supply to the load.

48. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals control the transimpedance node to modify a spectral content of energy as it flows from a power supply coupled to the transimpedance node to a load coupled to the output of the transimpedance node.

49. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals control the transimpedance node to an energy flow from a power supply coupled to the transimpedance node to an antenna coupled to the output of the transimpedance node.

50. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals control the transimpedance node to expedite energy transfer from a power supply coupled to the transimpedance node to a load coupled to the output of the transimpedance node.

51. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals control one or more switched input resistances of the transimpedance node.

52. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals control one or more switched input resistances of the transimpedance node to control an energy flow from a power supply coupled to the transimpedance node to a load coupled to the output of the transimpedance node.

53. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals control the transimpedance node to minimize energy transfer from input branches of the transimpedance node to the output of the transimpedance node.

54. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the transimpedance node non-linearly processes one or more of the plurality of control signals.

55. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the transimpedance node varies its class of operation according to the desired waveform.

56. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals are variable, thereby causing a variable impedance at the transimpedance node.

57. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of control signals are variable to cause steering currents to enter or leave the transimpedance node.

58. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the transimpedance node combines a plurality of input currents according to the plurality of control signals to generate the desired waveform at the output of the transimpedance node.

59. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the transimpedance node combines a plurality of branch input currents into a single output current.

60. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the transimpedance node is functionally similar to a variable load line.

61. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the transimpedance node is functionally similar to a dynamically variable load line.

62. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the transimpedance node is functionally similar to a variable impedance.

63. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the transimpedance node is functionally similar to a multiple-input single-output (MISO) amplifier.

64. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the desired waveform includes a modulated radio frequency (RF) signal.

65. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the desired waveform includes a modulated radio frequency (RF) signal, and wherein the modulated RF signal is first generated at the output of the transimpedance node.

66. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the desired waveform is first generated at the desired power at the output of the transimpedance node.
