Abstract

A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue includes applying energy to tissue in a first phase through an electrosurgical forceps having at least one electrically energizable electrode. The method also includes detecting a predetermined condition based on the application of energy to tissue during the first phase. The method also includes applying energy to tissue during a second phase upon detection of the predetermined condition and providing tension to the tissue during the second phase to separate the tissue.

Claims

1. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue, the method comprising:

applying energy to tissue in a first phase through an electrosurgical forceps having at least one electrically energizable electrode;

detecting a predetermined condition based on the application of energy to tissue during the first phase;

applying energy to tissue during a second phase upon detection of the predetermined condition; and

providing tension to the tissue during the second phase to separate the tissue.

2. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 1, wherein at least one of the first phase and the second phase is a tissue sealing phase.

3. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 1, further comprising providing tension to the electrosurgical forceps relative to the tissue during the second phase to separate the tissue.

4. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 1, further comprising providing a first audible tone during the first phase and a second audible tone during the second phase, the second audible tone being distinct from the first audible tone.

5. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 4, further comprising providing a third audible tone based on the detection of the predetermined condition, the third audible tone being distinct from at least one of the first audible tone and the second audible tone.

6. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 1, further comprising repeating the first phase upon detection of the predetermined condition.

7. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 1, further comprising terminating the delivery of energy to tissue based on the failure to detect the predetermined condition.

8. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 1, further comprising terminating the delivery of energy to tissue upon the expiration of a predetermined time period.

9. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 1, further comprising terminating the delivery of energy to tissue for a predetermined time period between the first phase and the second phase.

10. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 1, further comprising:

measuring at least one of an energy property and a tissue property during the first phase; and

determining the completion of the first phase as a function of at least one of the energy property and the tissue property.

11. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal divide tissue according to claim 1, further comprising:

measuring at least one of an energy property and a tissue property during the second phase; and

terminating the delivery of energy to tissue as a function of at least one of the energy property and the tissue property.

12. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 10, wherein the tissue property is selected from the group consisting of impedance and temperature.

13. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 11, wherein the tissue property is selected from the group consisting of impedance and temperature.

14. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 10, wherein the energy property is selected from the group consisting of voltage phase, current phase, and power.

15. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 11, wherein the energy property is selected from the group consisting of voltage phase, current phase, and power.

16. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 10, further comprising applying energy to tissue during the second phase based on the energy property of tissue as measured during the first phase.

18. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 12, wherein at least one of the first phase and the second phase is a tissue sealing phase.

19. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 12, wherein tension to the tissue occurs substantially simultaneously with the second phase.

17. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue, the method comprising:

applying energy to tissue through an electrosurgical forceps having at least one electrically energizable electrode which communicates the energy to the tissue in a first phase;

detecting a predetermined condition based on the application of energy to tissue during the first phase;

applying energy to tissue during a second phase upon detection of the predetermined condition;

providing tension to the tissue during the second phase to initiate separation of the tissue;

determining the completion of the separation of the tissue; and

terminating the application of energy to tissue upon determination of the completion of the separation of the tissue.

20. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 17, further comprising providing tension to the electrosurgical forceps relative to the tissue during the second phase to separate the tissue.

21. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue, the method comprising:

applying energy to tissue through an electrosurgical forceps having at least one electrically energizable electrode which communicates the energy to the tissue during a first phase;

detecting at least one of a tissue property and an energy property based on the application of energy to tissue during the first phase;

applying energy to tissue during a second phase based on at least one of the tissue property and the energy property; and

providing tension to the tissue during the second phase to separate the tissue.

22. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 21, further comprising terminating the application of energy to tissue upon separation of the tissue.

23. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 21, wherein the energy property is one of a terminal voltage phase measured during the first phase and a terminal power measured during the first phase.

24. A method for controlling delivery of energy to seal and divide tissue according to claim 21, wherein the energy property is a maximum power measured during the first phase.
