Abstract

A ureteral stent includes an elongated member, which has a tubular shape, and a distal retention structure. The elongated member includes a sidewall that defines a lumen and has a spiral-shaped opening with at least two rotations. The sidewall has an inner surface and an outer surface. The sidewall between the inner surface and the outer surface is devoid of another lumen. The elongated member is configured to move between a retracted configuration and an expanded configuration along a longitudinal axis of the lumen. The distal retention structure is disposed at a distal end of the elongated member for retention in a kidney. The distal retention structure defines a lumen in fluid communication with the lumen defined by the sidewall of the elongated member.

Claims

1. A ureteral stent comprising:

an elongated member having a tubular shape, the elongated member including a sidewall defining a lumen and having a spiral-shaped opening with at least two rotations, the sidewall having an inner surface and an outer surface, the sidewall between the inner surface and the outer surface being devoid of another lumen, the elongated member configured to move between a retracted configuration and an expanded configuration along a longitudinal axis of the lumen; and

a distal retention structure disposed at a distal end of the elongated member for retention in a kidney, the distal retention structure defining a lumen in fluid communication with the lumen defined by the sidewall of the elongated member.

The ureteral stent of claim 1, wherein a portion of the inner surface and a portion of the outer surface of the sidewall is disposed between a first rotation of the spiral-shaped opening and a second rotation of the spiral-shaped opening, the sidewall between the portion of the inner surface and the portion of the outer surface being devoid of another lumen.

3. The ureteral stent of claim 1, wherein the inner surface is concentric to the outer surface when the elongated member is in the retracted configuration.

4. The ureteral stent of claim 1, wherein the elongated member is constructed from a single monolithic tube.

5. The ureteral stent of claim 1, wherein spiral-shaped opening is formed by a slit in the sidewall.

6. The ureteral stent of claim 1, wherein a portion of the distal retention structure has a shape selected from a group consisting of a “

J”

shape, a coil shape, a pig-tail coil shape and a helical coil shape.

7. The ureteral stent of claim 1, further comprising a proximal retention structure disposed at a proximal end of the elongated member for retention in a bladder.

8. The ureteral stent of claim 7, wherein a portion of the proximal retention structure has a shape selected from a group consisting of a “

J”

shape, a coil shape, a pig-tail coil shape and a helical coil shape.

9. The ureteral stent of claim 1, wherein the elongated member is configured to move between the retracted configuration and the expanded configuration along the longitudinal axis in response to relative movement between the kidney and the bladder.

10. The ureteral stent of claim 1, wherein the sidewall has a constant thickness when the elongated member is in the retracted configuration.

11. The ureteral stent of claim 1, wherein at least one of the lumen defined by the sidewall and the lumen defined by the distal retention structure is configured to receive a guidewire.

12. The ureteral stent of claim 1, wherein the inner surface of the sidewall is substantially linear and parallel to the longitudinal axis along the length of a cross-section of the sidewall.

13. The ureteral stent of claim 1, wherein the lumen defined by the sidewall has a first diameter when the elongated member is in the expanded configuration and a second diameter when the elongated member is in the retracted configuration, the second diameter being greater than the first diameter.

14. A ureteral stent comprising:

a member including a sidewall having an inner surface and an outer surface, the member configured to move between a first configuration and a second configuration, the inner surface configured to define a lumen when the member is in the first configuration, the sidewall between the inner surface and the outer surface being devoid of another lumen; and

a distal retention structure disposed at a distal end of the member for retention in a kidney, the distal retention structure defining a lumen in fluid communication with the lumen defined by the inner surface of the member when the member is in the first configuration.

15. The ureteral stent of claim 14, wherein the inner surface is substantially parallel to the outer surface when the member is in the second configuration.

16. The ureteral stent of claim 14, wherein the inner surface is substantially concentric to the outer surface when the member is in the first configuration.

17. The ureteral stent of claim 14, wherein the sidewall has a cross-section when the member is in the second configuration, the cross-section being substantially quadrilateral in shape.

18. The ureteral stent of claim 14, wherein a portion of the distal retention structure has a shape selected from a group consisting of a “

J”

shape, a coil shape, a pig-tail coil shape and a helical coil shape.

19. The ureteral stent of claim 14, further comprising a proximal retention structure disposed at a proximal end of the member for retention in a bladder.

20. The ureteral stent of claim 14, wherein the sidewall has a constant thickness when the member is in the first configuration.

21. The ureteral stent of claim 14, wherein the inner surface and the outer surface of the sidewall are substantially linear when the member is in the second configuration.

22. A ureteral stent comprising:

an elongated member having a tubular shape, the elongated member including a sidewall having an inner surface defining a lumen, an outer surface configured to contact a ureter, and a spiral-shaped opening with at least two rotations, the sidewall having a cross-section taken along a plane that includes a longitudinal axis of the lumen, the inner surface of the sidewall being substantially parallel to the outer surface of the sidewall along the length of the cross-section of the sidewall between a first rotation of the spiral-shaped opening and a second rotation of the spiral-shaped opening; and

a distal retention structure disposed at a distal end of the elongated member for retention in a kidney.

23. The ureteral stent of claim 22, wherein the elongated member is configured to move between a retracted configuration and an expanded configuration along the longitudinal axis of the lumen.

24. The ureteral stent of claim 22, wherein the cross-section of the sidewall is taken along the plane that includes the longitudinal axis when the elongated member is in the expanded configuration.

25. The ureteral stent of claim 22, wherein the inner surface and the outer surface are substantially linear along the length of the cross-section of the sidewall.

26. The ureteral stent of claim 25, wherein the top surface and the bottom surface are substantially linear along the width of the cross-section of the sidewall.

27. The ureteral stent of claim 22, wherein a length of the cross-section of the sidewall is greater than a width of the cross-section of the sidewall between the first rotation of the spiral-shaped opening and the second rotation of the spiral-shaped opening.

28. The ureteral stent of claim 22, wherein the sidewall between the first rotation of the spiral-shaped opening and the second rotation of the spiral-shaped opening has top surface and a bottom surface, the top surface being substantially parallel to the bottom surface along the width of the cross-section of the sidewall.

29. The ureteral stent of claim 22, wherein the distal retention structure defines a lumen in fluid communication with the lumen defined by the inner surface of the sidewall.

30. The ureteral stent of claim 22, wherein a portion of the distal retention structure has a shape selected from a group consisting of a “

J”

shape, a coil shape, a pig-tail coil shape and a helical coil shape.

31. The ureteral stent of claim 22, further comprising a proximal retention structure disposed at a proximal end of the elongated member for retention in a bladder.
