Abstract

Methods and systems for allocating memory of user terminals are disclosed. A user terminal may determine a weight for one or more categories, each category being associated with Internet information to be broadcast. The user terminal also may determine an available memory size of memory and may allocate memory to the one or more categories for storing the Internet information based on the weights and the available memory size.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

determining a weight for one or more categories, each category being associated with Internet information to be broadcast;

determining an available memory size of memory at a user terminal; and

allocating memory to the one or more categories at the user terminal for storing the Internet information based on the weights and the available memory size.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving information on memory requirements for the one or more categories at the user terminal, wherein the memory allocated to the one or more categories is further based on the memory requirements.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the determining of the weights is based on monitoring Internet browsing behavior of the user terminal.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the monitoring comprises monitoring direct access Internet browsing of the user terminal.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the weights of the one or more categories are determined by preferences input at the user terminal.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the content categories comprise at least one web-based service.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the content categories comprise a specific link.

8. The method of claim 2, wherein the information on the memory requirements is received via Internet Protocol (IP) datacasting.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the IP datacasting comprises at least one of Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), DVB-Handheld (DVB-H), Media FLO (Forward Link Only), Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB), or Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS).

10. The method of claim 2, wherein the information on the memory requirements is received via a wireless communication network.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the wireless communication network comprises a cellular telecommunication network or a wireless local area network (WLAN).

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the available memory size is dynamic and the determining of the available memory size comprises an estimate based on memory usage history information.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving broadcast Internet information;

determining that memory has been allocated to a category associated with the broadcast Internet information; and

storing the broadcast Internet information in the category.

15. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving broadcast Internet information;

determining that memory has not been allocated to a category associated with the broadcast Internet information; and

discarding the broadcast Internet information.

14. The method of claim 14, wherein the broadcast Internet information comprises a category identifier.

16. An apparatus comprising:

a processor configured to;

determine a weight for one or more categories, each category being associated with Internet information to be broadcast;

determine an available memory size of the memory; and

allocate space in the memory to the one or more categories for storing the Internet information based on the weights and the available memory size.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising a memory configured to store computer readable instructions, and wherein the processor is configured to execute the computer readable instructions

18. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the processor is configured to receive information on memory requirements for the one or more categories, wherein the processor further allocates the space in the memory to the one or more categories based on the memory requirements.

19. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising a digital video recorder (DVR), a set-top box (STB), a server computer, a hard disc, an Internet browser device, or a mobile communication device.

20. One or more computer readable media storing computer-executable instructions which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform a method comprising:

determining a weight for one or more categories, each category being associated with Internet information to be broadcast;

determining an available memory size of memory at a user terminal; and

allocating memory to the one or more categories at the user terminal for storing the Internet information based on the weights and the available memory size.

21. The one or more computer readable media of claim 20, wherein the processor is configured to execute the computer readable instructions to process received information on memory requirements for the one or more categories, wherein the processor further allocates the memory to the one or more categories based on the memory requirements.

22. The one or more computer readable media of claim 20, wherein the determining of the weights is based on monitoring Internet browsing behavior of the user terminal.

23. The one or more computer readable media of claim 22, wherein the monitoring comprises monitoring direct access Internet browsing of the user terminal.

24. The one or more computer readable media of claim 20, wherein the weights of the one or more categories are determined by preferences input at the user terminal.

25. The one or more computer readable media of claim 20, wherein the content categories comprise at least one web-based service.

26. The one or more computer readable media of claim 20, wherein the content categories comprise a specific link.

27. The one or more computer readable media of claim 21, wherein the information on the memory requirements is received via Internet Protocol (IP) datacasting.

28. The one or more computer readable media of claim 27, wherein the IP datacasting comprises at least one of Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), DVB-Handheld (DVB-H), Media FLO (Forward Link Only), or Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB), or Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS).

29. The one or more computer readable media of claim 21, wherein the information on the memory requirements is received via a wireless communication network.

30. The one or more computer readable media of claim 29, wherein the wireless communication network comprises a cellular telecommunication network or a wireless local area network (WLAN).

31. The one or more computer readable media of claim 20, wherein the available memory size is dynamic and the determining of the available memory size comprises an estimate based on memory usage history information.

32. The one or more computer readable media of claim 20, further comprising:

receiving broadcast Internet information;

determining that memory has been allocated to a category associated with the broadcast Internet information; and

storing the broadcast Internet information in the category.

33. The one or more computer readable media of claim 32, wherein the broadcast Internet information comprises a category identifier.

34. The one or more computer readable media of claim 20, further comprising:

receiving broadcast Internet information;

determining that memory has not been allocated to a category associated with the broadcast Internet information; and

discarding the broadcast Internet information.

35. An apparatus comprising:

means for determining a weight for one or more categories, each category being associated with Internet information to be broadcast;

means for determining an available memory size of the memory; and

means for allocating space in the memory to the one or more categories for storing the Internet information based on the weights and the available memory size.
