Abstract

Biocompatible implants including a polymer substrate and a reactive component for implant fixation in situ. The reactive component in combination with the substrate creates a reactive implant which bonds to a tissue surface in situ.

Claims

1. A medical device comprising:

a substrate in combination with a reactive component, wherein the combination of the substrate and the reactive component create a reactive implant capable of bonding with a tissue surface upon implantation.

2. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the reactive component is selected from the group consisting of genipin, isocyanates, cyanoacrylates, aldehydes, diimides, cyanamide, carbodjimides, dimethyl adipimidate, starches, and combinations thereof.

3. The medical device of claim 2, wherein the reactive component is genipin.

4. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the reactive component is present on the reactive implant in amount of from about 0.05% by weight of the reactive implant to about 5% by weight of the reactive implant.

The medical device of claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises a material selected from the group consisting of gelatin, collagen, fibrin, fibrinogen, elastin, keratin, albumin, hydroxyethyl cellulose, cellulose, oxidized cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, carboxyethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, trimethylene carbonate, caprolactone, dioxanone, glycolic acid, lactic acid, glycolide, lactide, polytetrafluoroethylenes, polyethylene terephthalate, polyurethanes, and combinations thereof.

6. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the reactive component contacts the substrate in situ.

7. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the reactive component is coated on at least a portion of a surface of the substrate.

8. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the substrate and the reactive component are contacted in situ.

9. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the reactive component comprises a solution at a concentration of from about 0.1% w/v to about 10% w/v.

10. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the substrate is selected from the group consisting of sutures, staples, stents, meshes, tapes, gauzes, soft tissue repair devices, buttresses, bands, ribbons, grafts, scaffolds, wound dressings, and foams.

11. The medical device of claim 10, wherein the medical device is a mesh.

12. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the medical device further comprises a polymer coating.

13. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the medical device further comprises a bioactive agent.

14. A reactive implant comprising a porous substrate in combination with a reactive component, wherein the reactive component crosslinks the porous substrate to at least one tissue surface.

15. The medical device of claim 14, wherein the reactive component comprises genipin.

16. A method comprising:

providing a substrate comprising collagen;

contacting the substrate with a genipin solution creating a reactive implant; and

implanting the reactive implant in tissue.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising monitoring the bonding of the genipin with the tissue to determine a reaction rate of genipin with tissue.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein monitoring the bonding further comprises observing a color change in genipin to determine when the bonding of genipin with tissue is complete.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein the substrate is contacted with the genipin solution in situ.

20. The method of claim 16, wherein contacting the substrate with a genipin solution includes coating the substrate with the genipin solution.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the substrate is coated with the genipin solution by one of spraying, dipping, brushing, vapor deposition, co-extrusion, capillary wicking, film casting, and molding.

22. A method comprising:

packaging a substrate in an injectable package;

injecting a reactive component into the package, wherein the reactive component contacts the substrate; and

implanting the reactive substrate into tissue.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising injecting a bioactive agent into the package.

24. The method of claim 22, further comprising adding a bioactive agent to the reactive component prior to injecting the reactive component into the package.
