Abstract

The present invention provides an image guided whole body stereotactic needle placement device comprising a circular base plate (1), the semicircular rotating arc (2) secured on arc foot plates (16) on both sides of the semicircular rotating arc (2), the said foot plates (16) capable of sliding on a ridge (7) on the upper surface of the said base plate (1), a needle guide cover (4) for holding the needle guide (3), the needle sizing tube (6) adaptably holding the needle; a locking pin (5) to securely fix the needle sizing tube (6) into the needle guide cover (4) and a needle adaptably held in the needle seizing tube (6). More particularly it relates to a Computerized Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) compatible image guided stereotactic device useful for inserting needles or any such apparatus/medical devices through the said needle at a desired precise point in the body.

This device can be used in patients of all ages including infants and can be used for whole body including brain and also parts of the body that move with respiration.

The needle can be placed percutaneously or per-operatively under image guidance obtained from cross sectional imaging devices such as CT scan/MRI scan etc. Image guidance is required to select least harmful path for the needle, so as to avoid vital organs and structures such as blood vessels, bowel etc. The needle can be placed for obtaining tissue samples for the purpose of diagnosis or for delivering drugs/energy or for therapeutic/palliative aspiration of fluid collections or any such procedure.

Claims

1. An image guided whole body stereotactic needle placement device comprising a circular base plate* the semicircular rotating arc secured on arc foot plates on both sides of the arc, the said foot plates capable of rotating on the ridge on the upper surface of the base plate, the needle guide cover for holding the needle sizing tube adaptably fitted onto the needle guide with a locking pin to securely adaptably fix the needle guide, needle guide cover and needle sizing tube.

An image guided whole body stereotactic needle placement device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base plate which comprises a circular ring like base consisting of plane surface at the bottom, with a circular working space and a ridge on the upper surface of the said base having roughened surface for rotating and securely fixing the rotating arc, and outer row of taps for screws/sutures/clips, an inner row of taps for screws/sutures and the inner and outer radial markings in degrees.

3. An image guided whole body stereotactic needle placement device as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the bottom surface of the base plate showing fiducial markers useful for localizing the base plate in the co-ordinates system of the cross sectional imaging device such as CT/MRI.

An image guided whole body stereotactic needle placement device as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the arc comprising arc footplate one on each side of the arc, each having a radial grove adaptably fitting in the ridge on the upper surface of the base plate, a semi circular arc blade on the arc footplates, the said arc blade having radial markings on the front and back surface of semiciriuldi dii UteC=te- and the said footplates having taps for screws to secure the said footplates to the ridge on the base plate.

5. An image guided whole body stereotactic needle placement device as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the arc blade having the roughened track used for securing the screw used to fix the needle guide on the arc blade and radial markings.

6. An image guided whole body stereotactic needle placement device as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the needle guide which comprises a head for holding the front arm and the back arm separated by a slot bound by contact surface adaptably fitting on the upper side of the arc blade.

An image guided whole body stereotactic needle placement device as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the front arm of needle guide protrudes from the under surface of the head of the needle guide and the back arm having taps for screw protrudes from the back side of the head, the said front arm having a tapering at the other end and having a needle track indicator running from the head to the other end of the front arm and a slot for adaptably fitting to the locking pin.

An image guided whole body stereotactic needle placement device as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the needle guide cover comprising a grip protruding out of the top of the needle guide cover, two parallel restraining walls emanating from the sides of the needle guide cover, the said restraining walls having stoppers for front arm of the needle guide in which the said front arms adaptably fit within the inner restraining walls.

9. An image guided whole body stereotactic needle placement device as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the said needle guide cover also provides for a tunnel for needle sizing tube for adaptably

holding the said needle sizing tube in the said tunnel and also has slots for locking pin.

An image guided whole body stereotactic needle placement device as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the locking pin which comprises a locking plate and grip connected to each other at right angle, the said locking pin adaptably fitting in the slot for locking pin in the front arm of needle guide and the slot for the locking pin of the needle guide cover to hold the needle guide, needle sizing tube and the needle guide cover together.

An image guided whole body stereotactic needle placement device as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the needle sizing tube comprising a stem having a collar of slightly larger diameter than the stem and the tunnel for the sizing tube in needle guide cover, so that the collar is always outside the said tunnel, having a channel of appropriate size, through which the needle of appropriate size is placed in the needle sizing tube.
