Abstract

A computer system configures data elements based on textual sources by identifying subunits of a textual source, indexing the subunits into a sequence comprised of terms, identifies based on a target a base subsequence of the sequence, and stores the terms in such a way that they can be expanded or contracted and a user can rapidly and efficiently derive relevant information and context even from a vast amount of information including by navigable display to the user. Other methods and systems of configuring and displaying data elements from textual sources are provided.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method for configuring relationships among data elements of a textual source, the data elements stored in a computer-readable medium, the method comprising:

Identifying one or more subunits of said textual source, and storing said subunits in a computer memory;

Indexing said subunits to form a sequence, said sequence comprised of one or more terms, and storing said sequence in said computer memory;

Identifying, based on a target, a base subsequence of said sequence, said base subsequence comprised of one or more terms of said sequence; and

Storing said base subsequence in said computer memory in such a manner that it can be expanded by adding one or more terms from said sequence, or contracted by omitting one or more terms from said subsequence.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein said one or more subunits correspond to, respectively, one or more sentences.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein said base subsequence is transmitted to a user computer in such a manner that a user is able to navigate, by interacting with a display, through the terms of said base subsequence or said sequence.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 3, wherein said one or more subunits correspond to, respectively, one or more sentences.

5. A computer-implemented method for configuring and displaying relationships among textual data sources, said textual data sources stored in a computer-readable medium, the method comprising:

Deriving from said textual data sources one or more subunits by obtaining separable text boundaries, and storing said one or more subunits in a computer memory;

Indexing said one or more subunits to form a sequence, said sequence comprised of one or more terms, and storing said sequence in said memory;

Identifying based on a target, a base subsequence of said sequence, said base subsequence comprised of one or more terms of said sequence, and storing said base subsequence in said memory; and

Formatting said base subsequence in such a manner that a user is able to navigate, by interacting with a display, through said terms of said base subsequence or said sequence.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 5, wherein said one or more subunits correspond to, respectively, one or more sentences.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 5, wherein said base subsequence is expanded by adding one or more terms from said sequence, resulting in an expanded base subsequence.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 7, wherein said base subsequence and said expanded base subsequence are displayed on a monitor.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 7, wherein said one or more subunits comprise one or more sentences.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 7, wherein said navigably formatted base subsequence or said navigably formatted expanded base subsequence include adjacent terms.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 5, wherein said base subsequence is contracted by deleting one or more terms from said subsequence, resulting in a contracted base subsequence.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 11, wherein said terms of said base subsequence or said contracted base subsequence are displayed on a monitor.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 11, wherein said one or more subunits correspond, respectively, to one or more sentences.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 12, wherein said navigably formatted base subsequence or said navigably formatted expanded base subsequence include adjacent terms.

15. A system for identifying and formatting base subsequences in a text-based source, the system comprising:

A processor, and a computer memory in communication with said processor, wherein said processor is programmed to store in said memory one or more subunits of a textual source, to identify one or more subunits of said text-based source and store said one or more subunits in said computer memory, to index said subunits to form a sequence and to store said sequence in said computer memory, said sequence comprised of one or more terms;

to identify a base subsequence of said sequence based on a target, said base subsequence comprised of one or more terms of said sequence, and to store said base subsequence in said computer memory in such a manner that said base subsequence can be expanded by adding one or more terms from said sequence or contracted by omitting one or more terms from said base subsequence; and

to format said base subsequence in such a manner as to permit the display thereof on a monitor.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein said one or more subunits comprise one or more sentences.

17. An apparatus for configuring relationships among data elements in a textual source, the apparatus comprising:

Means for storing a text-based document in a computer-readable medium;

Means for identifying one or more subunits of said text-based document;

Means for indexing said subunits to form a sequence, said sequence comprised of one or more terms;

Means for identifying, based on a target, a base subsequence of said sequence, said base subsequence comprised of one or more terms;

Means for storing said base subsequence in such a manner that it can be expanded by adding one or more terms from said sequence, or contracted by omitting one or more terms from said base subsequence; and

Means for formatting display of said base subsequence in such a way as to enable a user to navigate therethrough by expanding the amount of terms or contracting the amount of terms.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein said one or more subunits comprise one or more sentences.
