- receiving an account identifier entered by a user via a user interface to initiate registering a user device with a network account;
determining one or more host names based on a domain name portion of the account identifier, wherein the one or more host names are not preconfigured on the user device;
attempting connections with each of the one or more host names, wherein each of the connection attempts uses one or more application protocols associated with a type of the network account;
determining that at least one of the connection attempts results in a successful connection; and
configuring a user account on the user device based on a host and protocol combination associated with the successful connection.
