Abstract

In one embodiment, a method is provided that includes designating a visual representation of an object in a display screen of a human machine interface, accessing any properties, connections, and text associated with the object in response to a trigger event, and creating an identical copy in response to the trigger event, wherein the identical copy includes any properties, connections and text associated with the object. An interface system that includes a machine readable medium having programming code implementing the method. An industrial automation device is also provided.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

designating a visual representation of an object in a display screen of a human machine interface;

accessing any properties, connections, and text associated with the object in response to a trigger event; and

creating an identical copy in response to the trigger event, wherein the identical copy includes any properties, connections and text associated with the object.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein accessing any properties, connections, and text associated with the object comprises defining an entity that comprises the properties, connections and text.

3. The method of claim 2, comprising sending the entity from an industrial automation device to the human machine interface.

4. The method of claim 3, comprising storing the entity on the human machine interface.

5. The method of claim 4, comprising sending the entity from the human machine interface to an industrial automation device.

6. The method of claim 5, comprising accessing the entity and storing the properties, connections, and text of the identical copy of the object.

7. The method of claim 3, comprising compressing the entity.

8. The method of claim 2, wherein the entity is described via a markup language.

9. The method of claim 3, wherein sending the entity comprises sending the entity from an industrial automation device to the human machine interface via a hypertext transfer protocol.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein sending the entity comprises sending the entity from the human machine interface to the industrial automation device via a hypertext transfer protocol.

11. An interface system, comprising

a machine readable medium, and

programming code stored on the machine readable medium comprising instructions for:

designating a visual representation of an object in a display screen of a human machine interface;

accessing any properties, connections, and text associated with the object in response to a trigger event; and

creating an identical copy of the object in response to the trigger event, wherein the identical copy includes any properties, connections and text associated with the object.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein accessing any properties, connections, and text associated with the object comprises defining an entity that comprises the properties, connections and text.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the programming code stored on the machine readable medium comprises instructions for sending the entity from an industrial automation device to the human machine interface.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the programming code stored on the machine readable medium comprises instructions for storing the entity on the human machine interface.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the programming code stored on the machine readable medium comprises instructions for sending the entity from the human machine interface to an industrial automation device.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the programming code stored on the machine readable medium comprises instructions for accessing the entity and storing the properties, connections, and text of the identical copy of the object.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein the programming code stored on the machine readable medium comprises instructions for compressing the entity.

22. The device of claim 17, comprising a human machine interface connected to the industrial automation device via a network.

18. An industrial automation device having a visual component, comprising:

a user viewable screen displaying a visual representation of an object, wherein the object comprises a plurality of properties, connections, and text associated with the object;

a memory configured to store programming code comprising instructions for;

accessing the plurality of properties, connections, and text associated with the object in response to a trigger event; and

creating an identical copy of the object in response to the trigger event, wherein the identical copy includes any properties, connections and text associated with the object.

19. The device of claim 18, wherein the user viewable screen comprises a dynamic HTML page.

20. The device of claim 18, wherein the user viewable screen comprises a web browser.

21. The device of claim 18, wherein accessing any properties, connections, and text associated with the object comprises defining an entity that comprises the properties, connections and text.

23. The device of claim 23, wherein the a user viewable screen is connected to the human machine interface.
