Abstract

An inexpensive light emitting device capable of displaying a bright image and an electric appliance using the light emitting device. In the light emitting device having a pixel portion and a driver circuit formed on one insulating member, all of semiconductor elements for the pixel portion and the driver circuit are formed by n-channel semiconductor elements, thereby enabling the manufacturing process to be simplified. Each of light-emitting elements provided in the pixel portion emits light in such a direction that most of the light travels away from the insulating member, so that substantially the whole of the pixel-forming segment electrode (corresponding to a cathode of an EL element) is formed as an effective light-emitting area. Therefore, a low-priced light-emitting device capable of displaying a bright image can be obtained.

46. A display device comprising:

a display portion comprising a plurality of pixels formed over a substrate; and

a driver circuit formed over the substrate,

wherein the driver circuit comprises a shift register containing a plurality of flip-flop circuits comprising enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistors and depletion-type n-channel thin film transistors, and

wherein all semiconductor elements in the display portion and the driver circuit are n-channel type semiconductor elements.

47. The display device according to claim 46, wherein each of the plurality of flip-flop circuits comprises an enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistor and two circuits.

48. The display device according to claim 47, wherein one of the two circuits is an EEMOS circuit.

49. The display device according to claim 47, wherein one of the two circuits is an EDMOS circuit.

50. The display device according to claim 47, wherein each of the plurality of flip-flop circuits further comprises an inverter circuit.

51. The display device according to claim 46, wherein the substrate is a plastic substrate covered with a protective film.

52. The display device according to claim 46, wherein the display device is a liquid crystal display device.

53. The display device according to claim 46, wherein the display device is incorporated in one selected from the group consisting of an image playback device, a personal computer, a video camera, a digital camera, a mobile computer, a mobile telephone, and an audio.

54. A display device comprising:

a display portion comprising a plurality of pixels formed over a substrate; and

a driver circuit formed over the substrate,

wherein the driver circuit comprises;

a shift register containing a plurality of flip-flop circuits comprising enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistors and depletion-type n-channel thin film transistors; and

a plurality of NAND circuits each comprising a first enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistor, a second enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistor, and a depletion-type n-channel thin film transistor,

wherein a gate electrode of the first enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistor is connected to a first output line,

wherein a source electrode of the first enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistor is connected to a ground power supply line,

wherein a drain electrode of the first enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistor is connected to the second enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistor, and

wherein all semiconductor elements in the display portion and the driver circuit are n-channel type semiconductor elements.

55. The display device according to claim 54, wherein each of the plurality of flip-flop circuits comprises an enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistor and two circuits.

56. The display device according to claim 55, wherein one of the two circuits is an EEMOS circuit.

57. The display device according to claim 55, wherein one of the two circuits is an EDMOS circuit.

58. The display device according to claim 55, wherein each of the plurality of flip-flop circuits further comprises an inverter circuit.

59. The display device according to claim 54, wherein the substrate is a plastic substrate covered with a protective film.

60. The display device according to claim 54, wherein the display device is a liquid crystal display device.

61. The display device according to claim 54, wherein the display device is incorporated in one selected from the group consisting of an image playback device, a personal computer, a video camera, a digital camera, a mobile computer, a mobile telephone, and an audio.

62. A display device comprising:

a display portion comprising a plurality of pixels formed over a substrate; and

a driver circuit formed over the substrate,

wherein the driver circuit comprises;

a buffer section; and

a shift register containing a plurality of flip-flop circuits comprising enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistors and depletion-type n-channel thin film transistors, and

wherein all semiconductor elements in the display portion and the driver circuit are n-channel type semiconductor elements.

63. The display device according to claim 62, wherein each of the plurality of flip-flop circuits comprises an enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistor and two circuits.

64. The display device according to claim 63, wherein one of the two circuits is an EEMOS circuit.

65. The display device according to claim 63, wherein one of the two circuits is an EDMOS circuit.

66. The display device according to claim 63, wherein each of the plurality of flip-flop circuits further comprises an inverter circuit.

67. The display device according to claim 62, wherein the buffer section comprises enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistors and depletion-type n-channel thin film transistors.

68. The display device according to claim 62, wherein the substrate is a plastic substrate covered with a protective film.

69. The display device according to claim 62, wherein the display device is a liquid crystal display device.

70. The display device according to claim 62, wherein the display device is incorporated in one selected from the group consisting of an image playback device, a personal computer, a video camera, a digital camera, a mobile computer, a mobile telephone, and an audio.

71. A display device comprising:

a display portion comprising a plurality of pixels formed over a substrate; and

a driver circuit formed over the substrate,

wherein the driver circuit comprises;

a transfer gate; and

a shift register containing a plurality of flip-flop circuits comprising enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistors and depletion-type n-channel thin film transistors, and

wherein all semiconductor elements in the display portion and the driver circuit are re-channel type semiconductor elements.

72. The display device according to claim 71, wherein each of the plurality of flip-flop circuits comprises an enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistor and two circuits.

73. The display device according to claim 72, wherein one of the two circuits is an EEMOS circuit.

74. The display device according to claim 72, wherein one of the two circuits is an EDMOS circuit.

75. The display device according to claim 72, wherein each of the plurality of flip-flop circuits further comprises an inverter circuit.

76. The display device according to claim 71, wherein the transfer gate comprises two enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistors.

77. The display device according to claim 71, wherein the substrate is a plastic substrate covered with a protective film.

78. The display device according to claim 71, wherein the display device is a liquid crystal display device.

79. The display device according to claim 71, wherein the display device is incorporated in one selected from the group consisting of an image playback device, a personal computer, a video camera, a digital camera, a mobile computer, a mobile telephone, and an audio.

80. A display device comprising:

a display portion comprising a plurality of pixels formed over a substrate; and

a driver circuit formed over the substrate,

wherein the driver circuit comprises;

a buffer section;

a transfer gate; and

a shift register containing a plurality of flip-flop circuits comprising enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistors and depletion-type n-channel thin film transistors, and

wherein all semiconductor elements in the display portion and the driver circuit are n-channel type semiconductor elements.

81. The display device according to claim 80, wherein each of the plurality of flip-flop circuits comprises an enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistor and two circuits.

82. The display device according to claim 81, wherein one of the two circuits is an EEMOS circuit.

83. The display device according to claim 81, wherein one of the two circuits is an EDMOS circuit.

84. The display device according to claim 81, wherein each of the plurality of flip-flop circuits further comprises an inverter circuit.

85. The display device according to claim 80, wherein the buffer section comprises enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistors and depletion-type n-channel thin film transistors.

86. The display device according to claim 80, wherein the transfer gate comprises two enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistors.

87. The display device according to claim 80, wherein the substrate is a plastic substrate covered with a protective film.

88. The display device according to claim 80, wherein the display device is a liquid crystal display device.

89. The display device according to claim 80, wherein the display device is incorporated in one selected from the group consisting of an image playback device, a personal computer, a video camera, a digital camera, a mobile computer, a mobile telephone, and an audio.

90. A display device comprising:

a display portion comprising a plurality of pixels formed over a substrate; and

a driver circuit formed over the substrate,

wherein each of the plurality of pixels comprises an enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistor and a depletion-type n-channel thin film transistor, and

wherein all semiconductor elements in the display portion and the driver circuit are n-channel type semiconductor elements.

91. The display device according to claim 90, wherein the substrate is a plastic substrate covered with a protective film.

92. The display device according to claim 90, wherein the display device is a liquid crystal display device.

93. The display device according to claim 90, wherein the display device is incorporated in one selected from the group consisting of an image playback device, a personal computer, a video camera, a digital camera, a mobile computer, a mobile telephone, and an audio.

94. A display device comprising:

a display portion comprising a plurality of pixels formed over a substrate; and

a driver circuit formed over the substrate,

wherein each of the plurality of pixels comprises an SRAM comprising an enhancement-type n-channel thin film transistor and a depletion-type n-channel thin film transistors, and

wherein all semiconductor elements in the display portion and the driver circuit are n-channel type semiconductor elements.

95. The display device according to claim 94, wherein the substrate is a plastic substrate covered with a protective film.

96. The display device according to claim 94, wherein the display device is a liquid crystal display device.

97. The display device according to claim 94, wherein the display device is incorporated in one selected from the group consisting of an image playback device, a personal computer, a video camera, a digital camera, a mobile computer, a mobile telephone, and an audio.
