Abstract

Golf clubs and golf club heads, such as putter heads, may include a putter body and an insert forming a ball striking face and engaged with the putter body. Portions of the insert may be formed of a metal material, while portions of the insert may be formed of a polymer material. The insert may include a base portion having grooves formed therein. This base may be joined with another material to form the insert. In some arrangements, the insert may be a two-sided, reversible construction and may have different performance characteristics associated with each side of the insert. Methods for making such putter devices are also described.

Claims

1. A golf club head, comprising:

a golf club head body having a front face, a rear portion, a toe end and a heel end;

a recess formed in the front face of the golf club head body; and

a ball striking surface insert configured to be received in the recess formed in the front face of the golf club head body and forming at least a portion of a ball striking surface of the golf club head, the ball striking surface insert including;

a front plate portion formed of a first material and having a plurality of grooves formed in the first material;

a backing plate portion engaged with the front plate portion, the backing plate portion being formed of a second material different from the first material.

2. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the plurality of grooves extend entirely through the front plate portion.

3. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein at least one of the plurality of grooves and a material of the backing plate portion extending into the grooves and exposed at an exterior surface of the ball striking surface insert includes scorelines formed therein.

4. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the first material is a metal material.

5. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the second material is a polymer material.

6. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the first material is a polymer material.

7. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the second material is a metal material.

8. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the second material has a lower Shore hardness value than the first material.

9. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the ball striking surface insert is connected to the golf club head using at least one of an adhesive, a fusing technique and at least one mechanical connector.

10. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein a material of the backing plate portion is forced into the grooves of the front plate portion via a co-molding process.

11. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the second material of the backing plate at least partially fills the grooves of the front plate portion.

12. The golf club head of claim 1, further including microgrooves formed in the front plate portion between adjacent grooves of the plurality of grooves.

13. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the ball striking face insert is releasably connected to the golf club head body.

14. A golf club, comprising:

a golf club head of claim 1; and

a shaft connected to the golf club.

15. A putter head, comprising:

a putter body including a top surface, a bottom surface, a rear surface, a front surface, a toe edge and a heel edge; and

a front face member extending from the toe edge to the heel edge of the putter body and engaged with the front surface of the putter body, the front face member including;

a first metal material member having a plurality of grooves formed therein, and

a polymer material engaged with the first metal material member, the polymer material at least partially filling the grooves of the first metal material member to form a portion of a ball striking surface of the putter head, and the polymer material extending along and forming a rear surface of the front face member.

16. The putter head of claim 15, wherein the polymer material forms a gasket to assist in preventing water and debris from entering between the front face member and the putter body.

17. The putter head of claim 15, wherein the first metal material includes at least one of aluminum, titanium, steel, nickel, beryllium, copper, or combinations or alloys including at least one of these metals.

18. The putter head of claim 15, wherein the plurality of grooves are formed in a central portion of the front face member.

19. The putter head of claim 18, wherein at least one of the front face member and the polymer material that form the ball striking surface of the putter head includes scorelines formed therein.

20. The putter head of claim 18, wherein the front face member further includes a side region arranged on each side of the central portion, the side regions being free of grooves.

21. The putter head of claim 15, wherein the plurality of grooves formed in the front face member extend substantially horizontally across a portion of the front face member when the putter head is oriented in a ball address position.

22. The putter head of claim 15, further including microgrooves formed in the front face member between adjacent grooves formed therein.

23. The putter head of claim 15, wherein the front face member is engaged with the putter body via at least one of an adhesive, a fusing technique and at least one mechanical connector.

24. The putter head of claim 15, wherein the front face member is releasably connected to the putter body.

25. A putter head, comprising:

a putter body including a top surface, a bottom surface, a rear surface, and a front face, the putter body including an aperture extending through the putter body from the front face to the rear surface; and

a ball striking surface insert received in the aperture of the putter body and engaged with the putter body, the ball striking surface insert including;

a first surface plate formed of a first material, the first surface plate having a plurality of grooves formed therein,

a second surface plate formed of a second material which may be the same as or different from the first material, the second surface plate having a plurality of grooves formed therein, and

a first fill material provided between the first surface plate and the second surface plate, wherein a portion of the first fill material is exposed through the grooves of the first surface plate,

wherein the first surface plate, the second surface plate, and the first fill material are engageable with the putter body such that (a) in a first configuration, the first surface plate forms a first side of the ball striking surface insert visible on the front face of the putter body and the second surface plate forms a second side of the ball striking surface insert visible on the rear surface of the putter body, and (b) in a second configuration, the second surface plate forms the first side of the ball striking surface insert visible on the front face of the putter body and the first surface plate forms the second side of the ball striking surface insert visible on the rear surface of the putter body.

26. The putter head of claim 25, wherein the ball striking surface insert is releasably engaged with the putter body to allow user selection between the first configuration and the second configuration.

27. The putter head of claim 26, wherein at least one of the first surface plate and the first fill member exposed through the grooves of the first surface plate includes scorelines formed therein.

28. The putter head of claim 26, wherein the putter head has different performance characteristics in the first configuration as compared to the second configuration.

29. The putter head of claim 28, wherein the different performance characteristics include materials of different hardnesses.

30. The putter head of claim 25, wherein the ball striking surface insert further includes a second fill material between the first surface plate and the second surface plate, wherein a portion of the second fill material is exposed through the grooves of the second surface plate.

31. The putter head of claim 25, wherein a portion of the first fill material is exposed through the grooves of the second surface plate.

32. The putter head of claim 31, wherein a first surface of the first fill material is treated different from a second surface of the first fill material so as to provide different hardness characteristics at the grooves of the first surface plate as compared to at the grooves of the second surface plate.

33. The putter head of claim 25, wherein the first surface plate and the second surface plate are different metal materials.

34. The putter head of claim 25, wherein at least one of the first surface plate and the second surface plate is a polymer material.

35. The putter head of claim 34, wherein the first surface plate and the second surface plate are polymer materials.

36. The putter head of claim 25, wherein the first fill material is a metal material.

37. The putter head of claim 25, wherein at least one of the first surface plate and the first fill material exposed through the grooves of the first surface plate includes scorelines formed therein.

38. The putter head of claim 25, wherein the first surface plate, when in the first configuration, and the second surface plate, when in the second configuration, provide the same loft angle to the front face of the putter head.

39. The putter head of claim 38, wherein the loft angle is less than 3 degrees.

40. The putter head of claim 38, wherein the loft angle is between 2 and 3 degrees.

41. The putter head of claim 25, further including a plurality of tungsten weights engaged at the rear surface of the putter body.

42. A putter, comprising:

a putter head of claim 25; and

a shaft engaged with the putter head.

43. A putter head, comprising:

a putter body including a top surface, a bottom surface, a rear surface, and a front face, the putter body including a recess extending at least partially through the putter body in a direction from the front face to the rear surface; and

a ball striking surface insert received in the recess and engaged with the putter body, the ball striking surface insert including;

a casing formed of a first material and having a plurality of grooves formed in an exterior surface of at least a first side of the casing, the casing defining an interior chamber; and

a polymer material at least substantially filling the interior chamber defined by the casing, the polymer material at least partially filling the plurality of grooves formed in the casing and forming a portion of a ball striking surface of the putter head.

44. The putter head of claim 43, further including a port formed in the casing through which the polymer material passes to fill the interior chamber.

45. The putter head of claim 43, wherein at least one of the polymer material filling the plurality of grooves and the first material at the plurality of the grooves includes scorelines formed therein.

46. The putter head of claim 43, wherein the casing further includes a plurality of grooves formed in a second side of the casing, wherein the first side of the casing is opposite the second side.

47. The putter head of claim 46, wherein the first side of the casing and the second side of the casing having different performance characteristics.

48. The putter head of claim 46, wherein the ball striking surface insert is releasably engaged with the putter body.

49. The putter head of claim 48, wherein the ball striking surface insert is reversible within the putter body such that the first side or the second side of the casing may form at least a portion of the ball striking surface of the putter head.

50. The putter head of claim 49, wherein the first side of the casing and the second side of the casing each have the same loft angle when engaged to form the portion of the ball striking surface.

51. The putter head of claim 50, wherein the loft angle is less than 3 degrees.

52. The putter head of claim 51, wherein the loft angle is between 2 and 3 degrees.

53. The putter head of claim 43, further including a plurality of weights engaged at the rear surface of the putter body.

54. A putter head, comprising:

a putter body including a front face and a recess formed in the front face;

a ball striking surface insert configured to be received in the recess formed in the front face of the putter body, the ball striking surface insert formed of a polymer material and having a first plurality of grooves formed in a first surface thereof; and

a first plurality of thin metal strips engaged within the first plurality of grooves to form a first ball striking face including the first surface of the ball striking surface insert and the first plurality of thin metal strips.

55. The putter head of claim 54, wherein the first plurality of grooves extend substantially horizontally across the front face of the putter body when the putter is at a ball address position.

56. The putter head of claim 54, wherein the ball striking surface insert further includes a second plurality of grooves formed in a second surface of the ball striking surface insert and a second plurality of thin metal strips engaged within the second plurality of grooves to form a second ball striking face including the second surface of the ball striking surface insert and the second plurality of thin metal strips.

57. The putter head of claim 56, wherein the second plurality of grooves and the second plurality of metal strips have different performance characteristics than the first plurality of grooves and the first plurality of metal strips.

58. A method of forming a putter head, comprising:

providing a putter body having a front face;

forming a recess in the front face of the putter body;

forming a ball striking surface insert of a polymeric material;

forming a plurality of grooves in a first side of the ball striking surface insert;

providing a plurality of thin metal strips within at least a portion of the plurality of grooves; and

engaging the ball striking surface insert with the recess formed in the front face of the putter body.

59. The method of claim 58, wherein the step of engaging the ball striking surface insert with the recess includes releasably engaging the ball striking surface insert with the recess.

60. The method of claim 59, further including forming a second plurality of grooves in a second side of the ball striking surface insert and providing a second plurality of thin metal strips within at least a portion of the second plurality of grooves, the second side having different performance characteristics than the first side.

61. The method of claim 58, further including forming a plurality of microgrooves between adjacent grooves of the plurality of grooves.

62. The method of claim 61, wherein the step of forming a plurality of microgrooves including forming microgrooves between 1 micron and 1 mm deep.

63. A putter head, comprising:

a putter body having a front face, a rear surface, a top portion and a bottom portion, the putter body having a recess formed in the front face; and

a multi-sided ball striking face insert including;

a first side including a first side plate portion having a plurality of grooves formed therein, the first side plate portion being formed of a metal material that forms a majority of the first side plate portion, the first side further including a first backing portion formed of a polymer material and engaged with a rear surface of the first side plate portion, and

a second side including a second side plate portion having a plurality of grooves formed therein, the second side plate portion being formed of a polymer material that forms a majority of the second side plate portion, the second side further a metal material within the plurality of grooves,

wherein the multi-sided ball striking face insert is configured and engageable with the putter body such that either of the first side and the second side form a ball striking surface of the putter head.

64. The putter head of claim 63, wherein the polymer of the first side is the same as the polymer of the second side.

65. The putter head of claim 63, wherein the polymer of the first side is different from the polymer of the second side.

66. The putter head of claim 63, wherein the first side and the second side of the multi-sided ball striking face insert have different performance characteristics.

67. The putter head of claim 63, wherein the first side is harder than the second side.

68. The putter head of claim 63, wherein the multi-sided ball striking face insert is releasably engaged with the recess formed in the front face of the putter body.

69. The putter head of claim 63, wherein the recess formed in the front face of the putter body is an aperture extending through the putter body from the front face to the rear surface.

70. The putter head of claim 69, wherein the multi-sided ball striking face member is visible from a front of the putter body and from a rear of the putter body.
