Abstract

A dialysis machine includes: (i) a source of peritoneal dialysis solution; (ii) a patient line for passing the peritoneal dialysis solution to the peritoneal cavity of a patient; (iii) a pump for pumping the peritoneal dialysis solution to the peritoneal cavity via the patient line; (iv) a heater for heating the peritoneal dialysis solution prior to the dialysis solution reaching the patient line, the heater including first and second heating elements; (v) a voltage input from a remote power source; and (vi) a control scheme responsive to the voltage input and configured to (a) automatically maintain a proper dialysis solution temperature for the patient via the first and second heating elements regardless of the voltage input wherein the control (b) account for an inlet temperature of the dialysis solution to the heater and (c) account for heater efficiency.

Claims

1. A dialysis machine comprising:

a source of peritoneal dialysis solution;

a patient line for passing the peritoneal dialysis solution to the peritoneal cavity of a patient;

a pump for pumping the peritoneal dialysis solution to the peritoneal cavity via the patient line;

a heater for heating the peritoneal dialysis solution prior to the dialysis solution reaching the patient line, the heater including first and second heating elements;

a voltage input from a remote power source; and

a control scheme responsive to the voltage input and configured to (i) automatically maintain a proper dialysis solution temperature for the patient via the first and second heating elements regardless of the voltage input wherein the control (ii) account for an inlet temperature of the dialysis solution to the heater and (iii) account for heater efficiency.

2. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 1, wherein the first and second heating elements include upper and lower heater plates.

3. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 1, wherein the pump is a membrane pump having at least one flexible sheet that is moved for pumping the peritoneal dialysis solution to the patient line.

4. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 3, wherein the membrane is moved mechanically and pneumatically.

5. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 3, wherein the control scheme is configured additionally to account for a frequency of strokes of the membrane.

6. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 1, which is configured to accept up to a 240 VAC input from the power source.

7. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 1, wherein the control scheme is configured to maintain the proper dialysis solution temperature by controlling a duty cycle of the first and second heating elements of the heater.

8. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 1, wherein the control scheme is configured to account for the voltage input to the heater by determining heater power using the voltage input.

9. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 1, wherein the voltage input is accounted for in a first part of the control scheme, the first part of the control scheme combined with a second part of the control scheme to maintain the proper dialysis solution temperature.

10. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 9, wherein the second part of the control scheme employs fuzzy logic.

11. A peritoneal dialysis machine comprising:

a source of peritoneal dialysis solution;

a patient line for passing the peritoneal dialysis solution to the peritoneal cavity of a patient;

a pump for pumping the peritoneal dialysis solution to the peritoneal cavity via the patient line;

a heater for heating the dialysis solution prior to the dialysis solution reaching the line;

a voltage input from a remote power source, the machine electrically insulated such that the voltage input can be either 110 or 240 VAC; and

a control scheme configured to automatically maintain a desired dialysis solution temperature using the heater regardless of whether the voltage input is 110 or 240 VAC.

12. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 11, which is electrically insulated such that the voltage input can range from 90 to 260 VAC.

13. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 11, wherein the heater includes first and second heater elements controlled by the control scheme.

14. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 13, wherein the first and second heater elements are electrically isolated using insulation that is thermally conductive.

15. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 11, which is electrically isolated such that the remote power supply is not required to have an earth ground.

16. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 11, which is electrically isolated using at least one of double insulation or reinforced insulation.

17. A peritoneal dialysis machine comprising:

a source of peritoneal dialysis solution;

a patient line for passing the peritoneal dialysis solution to the peritoneal cavity of a patient;

a pump for pumping the peritoneal dialysis solution to the peritoneal cavity via the patient line;

a heater for heating the dialysis solution prior to the dialysis solution reaching the line;

a voltage input from a remote power source, the machine electrically insulated such that the voltage input can be either 110 or 240 VAC; and

a control scheme configured to control a duty cycle of the heater maintain a desired dialysis solution temperature regardless of a valve of the voltage input.

18. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 17, wherein control scheme has an update rate that is not evenly divisible into a frequency of the voltage input.

19. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 17, wherein the control scheme has an update rate that ends in a fraction of a whole unit of time.

20. The peritoneal dialysis machine of claim 17, wherein the valve of the voltage input is from 90 VAC to 260 VAC.
