Abstract

An apparatus, system and method for monitoring calls that have been forwarded to a network-based voice mail system (VMS). The VMS receives the forwarded call and sends a start of greeting signal at the beginning and an end of greeting signal at the completion of the voice message greeting to the central office switch. The switch sends an activate call monitoring data message and a call monitoring alert signal to the customer premises equipment (CPE). If the CPE is adapted for call monitoring and includes a speaker assembly, then the speaker assembly is engaged in response to the activate call monitoring data message, thereby allowing hands-free call monitoring. If the CPE does not include a speaker assembly, then the called party may activate call monitoring by lifting the handset in response to detecting a call monitoring alert from the CPE. While monitoring the call, the called party may intercept the call to speak with the calling party.

Claims

1. A telephone comprising:

a speaker assembly to audibly present communications received from a telephone network;

circuitry in response to receipt of a call monitoring data message from the telephone network activating the speaker assembly to allow monitoring of incoming audible communications from a telephone call while muting outgoing audible communications.

2. The telephone of claim 1, wherein the call monitoring data message is received from a voice messaging system and the audible communications comprise a audible message being left on the voice mail system by a caller.

3. The telephone of claim 1, wherein the telephone is configurable with a distinctive ring to indicate availability of call monitoring.

4. The telephone of claim 1, wherein the telephone transmits an intercept tone to a central office to direct the central office to allow a called party to communicate with the caller of the outgoing audible communications.

5. The telephone of claim 1, wherein lifting of a handset of the telephone causes transmission of the intercept tone.

6. The telephone of claim 1, wherein the call monitoring data message comprises an in-band signaling message.

7. The telephone of claim 2, wherein the telephone transmits an intercept tone to the voice messaging system to direct the voice messaging system to allow a called party to communicate with the caller of the outgoing audible communications.

8. The telephone of claim 1, wherein the intercept tone comprises a command to disconnect the caller from the voice mail system after connecting the calling party in on the telephone call.

9. The telephone of claim 1, wherein the intercept tone comprises a command to delete a voice mail message left being left by the caller on the voice mail system.

10. The telephone of claim 1, wherein the intercept tone comprises a command to continue to record a voice mail message started by the caller on the voice mail system.

11. A method of monitoring telephone communications comprising:

in response to receipt of a call monitoring data message from the telephone network, activating a speaker assembly of a telephone to allow monitoring of incoming audible communications from a telephone call; and

muting outgoing audible communications.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the call monitoring data message is received from a voice messaging system and the audible communications comprise a audible message being left on the voice mail system by a caller.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the telephone is configurable with a distinctive ring to indicate availability of call monitoring.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the telephone transmits an intercept tone to a central office to direct the central office to allow a called party to communicate with the caller of the outgoing audible communications.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein lifting of a handset of the telephone causes transmission of the intercept tone.

16. The method of claim 11, wherein the call monitoring data message comprises an in-band signaling message.

17. The method of claim 12, wherein the telephone transmits an intercept tone to the voice messaging system to direct the voice messaging system to allow a called party to communicate with the caller of the outgoing audible communications.

18. The method of claim 11, wherein the intercept tone comprises a command to disconnect the caller from the voice mail system after connecting the calling party in on the telephone call.

19. The method of claim 11, wherein the intercept tone comprises a command to delete a voice mail message left being left by the caller on the voice mail system.

20. The method of claim 11, wherein the intercept tone comprises a command to continue to record a voice mail message started by the caller on the voice mail system.
