Abstract

Communications traffic in a network is addressed. An original signal comprising an embedded destination service address is receiving at an ingress capable network device of the network. A database server is queried to obtain an internal routing address corresponding to the embedded destination service address. A transit signal corresponding to the original signal and including at least the embedded destination service address is routed through the network to an egress capable network device of the network according to the internal routing address. The transit signal enables the egress capable network device to restore the embedded destination service address and to forward the transit signal from the network.

Claims

1. A method for addressing and routing communications traffic, comprising:

receiving, at an ingress capable network device of a network, an original signal comprising an embedded destination service address;

querying a database server to obtain an internal routing address corresponding to the embedded destination service address; and

routing a transit signal corresponding to the original signal and including at least the embedded destination service address through the network to an egress capable network device of the network according to the internal routing address, enabling the egress capable network device to restore the embedded destination service address and to forward the transit signal from the network.

2. The method according to claim 1,

wherein the transit signal comprises at least a portion of the original signal.

3. The method according to claim 1,

wherein the network comprises a compatible public network.

4. The method according to claim 1,

wherein the network comprises a compatible private network.

5. The method according to claim 1,

wherein the database server comprises a local naming system server that includes at least one look-up table having registered pairs of destination service addresses and internal routing addresses for addresses internal to the network.

6. The method according to claim 5,

wherein the destination service addresses are for addresses external to the network.

7. A method for addressing and routing communications traffic, comprising:

receiving, at an ingress capable network device of a network, an original signal comprising a destination address identifier corresponding to a destination service address for an address external to the network;

providing the destination address identifier to a database server and receiving an internal routing address, corresponding to the destination address identifier, for an address internal to the network;

substituting the destination address identifier with the internal routing address in a transit signal; and

routing the transit signal through the network to an egress capable network device based on the internal routing address, enabling the egress capable network device to restore the destination address identifier and to forward the transit signal from the network based on the restored destination address identifier.

8. The method according to claim 7,

wherein the transit signal comprises a SETUP signal.

9. The method according to claim 7,

wherein the database server comprises a local naming system server that includes at least one look-up table.

10. The method according to claim 9,

wherein the internal routing address is paired with the destination address identifier in the at least one look-up table.

11. The method according to claim 9,

wherein the internal routing address is paired with a destination compatible network identifying code corresponding to the destination address identifier in the at least one look-up table.

12. The method according to claim 11,

wherein the destination compatible network identifying code is obtained from a second look-up table of the local naming system server.

13. The method according to claim 11,

wherein the destination compatible network identifying code is obtained from a global naming system server, separate from the local naming system server.

14. The method according to claim 7,

wherein the destination compatible network identifying code identifies a compatible public network.

15. An ingress capable device of a communications network, comprising:

a receiver that receives an original signal comprising an embedded destination service address;

a processor that generates a query to a database server to obtain an internal routing address corresponding to the embedded destination service address; and

a router that routes a transit signal corresponding to the original signal and including at least the embedded destination service address through the network to an egress capable network device of the network according to the internal routing address, enabling the egress capable network device to restore the embedded destination service address and to forward the transit signal from the network.

16. The ingress capable device according to claim 15,

wherein the database server identifies the internal routing address from among a stored plurality of internal routing addresses by associating the destination service address received from the ingress edge device with the internal routing address.

17. The ingress capable device according to claim 15,

wherein the database server identifies the internal routing address from among a stored plurality of internal routing addresses by associating the destination service address received from the ingress edge device with a destination compatible network identifying code that identifies a compatible destination network to which the transit signal can be routed.

18. The ingress capable device according to claim 17,

wherein the database server associates the destination service address with the destination compatible network identifying code by consulting a global database outside the network to obtain the destination compatible network identifying code.

19. The ingress capable device according to claim 17,

wherein the database server identifies the internal routing address by further associating the destination compatible network identifying code with the internal routing address.

20. The ingress capable device according to claim 15,

wherein the transit signal comprises a SETUP signal.
