Abstract

An analyte monitor includes a sensor, a sensor control unit, and a display unit. The sensor has, for example, a substrate, a recessed channel formed in the substrate, and conductive material disposed in the recessed channel to form a working electrode. The sensor control unit typically has a housing adapted for placement on skin and is adapted to receive a portion of an electrochemical sensor. The sensor control unit also includes two or more conductive contacts disposed on the housing and configured for coupling to two or more contact pads on the sensor. A transmitter is disposed in the housing and coupled to the plurality of conductive contacts for transmitting data obtained using the sensor. The display unit has a receiver for receiving data transmitted by the transmitter of the sensor control unit and a display coupled to the receiver for displaying an indication of a level of an analyte. The analyte monitor may also be part of a drug delivery system to alter the level of the analyte based on the data obtained using the sensor.

Claims

1. A communication device, comprising:

an input unit configured to receive an indication associated with one or more parameters related to a patient condition;

a processor operatively coupled to the input unit, the processor configured to process information related to the received indication;

an output unit operatively coupled to the processor and configured to output an output indication based on the processed information; and

an RF transmitter operatively coupled to the processor and configured to wirelessly transmit one or more signals associated with the processed information.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the output unit includes a display.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the input unit includes an RF receiver.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein the indication associated with one or more parameters related to the patient condition includes an analyte level.

5. The device of claim 1 wherein the processed information related to the received indication includes a treatment protocol.

6. The device of claim 5 wherein the treatment protocol includes an insulin treatment.

7. The device of claim 5 wherein the treatment protocol includes a drug administration protocol.

8. The device of claim 5 wherein the received indication associated with one or more parameters related to the patient condition includes data related to the treatment protocol.

9. The device of claim 8 wherein the data related to the treatment protocol includes one or more of drug sensitivity curve, a trend in the patient'"'"'s response to the treatment protocol, or a characteristic time constant for response to the treatment protocol.

10. The device of claim 1 wherein the input unit includes an RF receiver operatively coupled to the processor to receive remotely generated signals associated with a monitored analyte level.

11. The device of claim 10 wherein the monitored analyte is glucose.

12. The device of claim 10 wherein the RF receiver is configured to wirelessly receive one or more signals related to the monitored analyte level of a patient from an analyte sensor.

13. The device of claim 12 wherein the analyte sensor includes a glucose sensor.

14. The device of claim 10 wherein the RF receiver is configured to receive one or more analyte sensor data or calibration data.

15. The device of claim 1 including a calibrator operatively coupled to the processor for receiving a sample to determine a calibration value.

16. The device of claim 15 wherein the calibrator is a glucose calibrator.

17. The device of claim 15 wherein the processor is configured to determine the calibration value using less that about one microliter of body fluid.

18. The device of claim 15 wherein the sample includes a blood sample.

19. The device of claim 1 wherein the RF transmitter is configured to transmit the one or more signals associated with the processed information to a drug administration system.
