Abstract

A method, system and graphical user interface for enabling a user to access enterprise data and interact with enterprise applications generating the enterprise data using a portable electronic device is disclosed. A native application for a portable electronic device enables a user of the portable electronic device to initiate or interact with one or more enterprise applications. Each of the enterprise applications is executed remotely on a system in communication with the portable electronic device, where the portable electronic device may communicate data to the remote system and display data received from the remote system. Processing resources and storage resources of the remote system may be utilized to execute the enterprise application, thereby enabling a user to initiate or interact with a computationally-intensive enterprise application using a portable electronic device.

Claims

1. A method of interfacing with a user, said method comprising:

executing a native application on a portable computer system, wherein said portable computer system comprises a display screen and a user input device;

using said native application, displaying of plurality of applications for selection by a user;

in response to a user selection of a first of said plurality of applications, said portable computer system causing said first application to be executed on a remote computer system, wherein execution of said first application generates first enterprise content at said remote computer system;

said native application receiving said first enterprise content and parsing said first enterprise content for display thereof; and

said native application rendering a representation of said first enterprise content on said display screen.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said native application rendering a representation of said first enterprise content comprises a first program portion of said native application performing said rendering, wherein said first program portion is associated with said first application.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said first program portion is operable to perform at least one operation associated with said first application.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein said at least one operation is selected from a group consisting of:

tracking user navigation through content rendered by said portable electronic device and associated with said first application;

re-rendering a previously-displayed portion of said first enterprise content; and

re-displaying said plurality of applications for selection by a user.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

in response to a user selection of a second of said plurality of applications, said portable computer system causing said second application to be executed on a remote computer system, wherein execution of said second application generates second enterprise content at said remote computer system;

said native application receiving said second enterprise content and parsing said second enterprise content for display thereof; and

said native application rendering a representation of said second enterprise content on said display screen.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein said native application rendering a representation of said second enterprise content comprises a second program portion of said native application performing said rendering, wherein said second program portion is associated with said second application.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein said portable computer system comprises a memory device and further comprising:

placing a portion of said first enterprise content into said memory device; and

said second application accessing said portion from said memory for use thereof.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

transforming said first enterprise content from a first format to a second format before access by said native application, wherein said second format comprises a web content format, and wherein said first format comprises an enterprise format different from said first format and associated with said first application.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

accessing a user input associated with said first enterprise content rendered on said portable electronic device;

communicating said user input to said remote computer system for generation of third enterprise content, said third enterprise content associated with said first enterprise content and said user input;

said native application receiving said third enterprise content and parsing said third enterprise content for display thereof; and

said native application rendering a representation of said third enterprise content on said display screen.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

in response to a user request to install said native application on said portable electronic device, downloading said native application to said portable electronic device;

accessing user information associated with said user; and

selecting said plurality of applications from a second plurality of applications for display on said portable electronic device, wherein said selecting said plurality of applications further comprises selecting said plurality of applications from said second plurality of applications based on said user information, and wherein said plurality of applications is a subset of said second plurality of applications.

11. A system comprising:

a first component operable to execute a plurality of enterprise applications;

a portable electronic device communicatively coupled to said first component and disposed remotely from said first component, wherein said portable electronic device is operable to execute a plurality of native applications, wherein said plurality of native applications comprises a native enterprise application operable to initiate execution of at least one enterprise application of said plurality of enterprise applications on said first component;

a second component communicatively coupled between said first component and said portable electronic device, wherein said second component is operable to transform enterprise content from said at least one enterprise application into enterprise web content for rendering on said portable electronic device; and

wherein said portable electronic device is further operable to display said enterprise web content for enabling user interaction with said at least one enterprise application executed by said first component.

The system of claim 11, wherein said portable electronic device is further operable to access a user input associated with said at least one enterprise application, wherein said portable electronic device is further operable to communicate data associated with said user input to said first component via said second component, wherein said first component is further operable to generate additional enterprise content based upon said data associated with said user input, and wherein said second component is further operable to transform said additional enterprise content into additional web content for rendering on said portable electronic device.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein said first component is further operable to access enterprise data from a database, said enterprise data for use by said first enterprise application, and wherein said database is disposed remotely from said portable electronic device and said second component.

The system of claim 13, wherein said first component is further operable to establish a trusted connection between said database and a remote computer system comprising said first component, said trusted connection providing increased security for data communicated between said database and said remote computer system.

15. The system of claim 11, wherein said portable electronic device is further operable to establish a trusted connection between said portable electronic device and a remote computer system comprising said first and second components, said trusted connection established using said native enterprise application and providing increased security for data communicated between said portable electronic device and said remote computer system.

16. The system of claim 11 further comprising:

a server communicatively coupled to said portable electronic device and comprising said plurality of native applications for download by said portable electronic device, said server disposed remotely from said portable electronic device; and

in response to a request from a user to download said native enterprise application, wherein said portable electronic device is further operable to download said native enterprise application from said server.

17. The system of claim 11, wherein said first component is further operable to:

access user information associated with a user of said portable electronic device; and

select said plurality of applications, based on said user information, from a second plurality of applications, wherein said plurality of applications is a subset of said second plurality of applications.

The system of claim 11, wherein said portable electronic device is further operable to perform additional processing on said first enterprise data prior to rendering thereof, wherein said additional processing utilizes a program portion of said native enterprise application associated with said first application.

19. A graphical user interface for a portable electronic device, said graphical user interface comprising:

a first region for displaying a first plurality of user interface elements associated with a native enterprise application executed by said portable electronic device, wherein each of said first plurality of user interface elements is associated with a respective enterprise application, wherein selection of a first user interface element of said first plurality of user interface elements is operable to cause a remote computer system to execute a first enterprise application associated with said first user interface element, and wherein said first region is further operable to display enterprise content generated by said remote computer system executing said first enterprise application; and

a second region for displaying a second plurality of user interface elements associated with said native enterprise application and at least one other native application for execution by said portable electronic device, wherein a user interaction with a second user interface element of said second plurality of user interface elements is operable to adjust a display of said enterprise web content in said first region.

The graphical user interface of claim 19, wherein said first plurality of user interface elements are arranged in a ring, and wherein user interaction with said first region is operable to cause said ring to rotate and display at least one additional user interface element associated with said native enterprise application.

21. The graphical user interface of claim 19, wherein said first plurality of user interface elements are arranged in a list-based menu, and wherein user interaction with said first region is operable to cause said list-based menu to scroll and display at least one additional user interface element associated with said native enterprise application.

22. The graphical user interface of claim 19, wherein an interaction with said second user interface element is operable to perform an operation selected from a group consisting of a re-display of said first plurality of user interface elements in said first region and a re-display of a portion of said enterprise content previously displayed in said first region.
