Abstract

A wireless communication device, a wireless communication system and a method of transmitting by a piconet controller (PNC) a poll request frame using beamforming techniques to one or more devices, wherein the poll request frame includes a time offset for sending a poll response frame by the device. The PNC receives the poll response frame with a channel bandwidth allocation request and dynamically allocating a channel bandwidth to the one or more devices according to the channel bandwidth allocation request.

Claims

1. A method of communication in a wireless communication network comprising:

transmitting a poll request frame using beamforming techniques, wherein the poll request frame includes a time offset for sending a poll response frame;

receiving the poll response frame with a channel bandwidth allocation request and a target device address; and

dynamically allocating a channel bandwidth according to the channel bandwidth allocation request.

2. The method of claim 1, comprising:

initiating a grant period;

transmitting a polling grant frame to performing a channel bandwidth grant during the grant period.

3. The method of claim 1, comprising:

initiating a polling period for transmitting the polling request and the polling response.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein initiating the polling period comprises:

scheduling a response time slot.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein during the grant period the method comprises:

truncating and expending the allocated channel bandwidth.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein truncating comprising:

receiving a bandwidth truncating message;

obtaining knowledge on a channel bandwidth usage; and

transmitting a polling grant frame with a required bandwidth according to the channel bandwidth usage.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein obtaining comprises:

transmitting a request frame which includes a goal of allocating a link free up time to another link.

8. The method of claim 5, wherein expending comprises:

receiving a channel bandwidth extension message; and

grant a channel bandwidth extension base on a link bandwidth usage.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein grant comprises:

transmitting a poll grant frame to advertise the channel bandwidth extension.

10. A wireless communication device comprising:

a transmitter to transmit a poll request frame using beamforming techniques, wherein the poll request frame includes a time offset for sending a poll response frame;

a receiver to receive the poll response frame with a channel bandwidth allocation request and a target device address; and

a bandwidth allocator to dynamically allocate a channel bandwidth according to the channel bandwidth allocation request.

11. The wireless communication device of claim 10, wherein the bandwidth allocator is to initiate a grant period to transmit a polling grant frame to perform a channel bandwidth grant during the grant period.

12. The wireless communication device of claim 10, wherein the bandwidth allocator is to initiate a polling period to transmit the polling request and the polling response.

13. The wireless communication device of claim 12, wherein the bandwidth allocator is to schedule a response time slot.

14. The wireless communication device of claim 10, wherein during the grant period the bandwidth allocator is able to truncate and expend the allocated channel bandwidth.

15. The wireless communication device of claim 14, wherein a bandwidth truncation is perform by:

receiving a bandwidth truncating message;

obtaining knowledge on a channel bandwidth usage; and

transmitting a polling grant frame with a required bandwidth according to the channel bandwidth usage.

16. The wireless communication device of claim 15, wherein obtaining comprises:

transmitting a request frame which includes a goal of allocating a link free up time to another link.

17. The wireless communication device of claim 14, wherein a bandwidth expansion preformed by:

the receiver to receive a channel bandwidth extension message; and

the bandwidth allocator to grant a channel bandwidth extension base on a link bandwidth usage.

18. The wireless communication device of claim 17, wherein the transmitter to transmit a poll grant frame to advertise the channel bandwidth extension.

19. The wireless communication device of claim 10 comprises a piconet coordinator (PNC).

20. The wireless communication device of claim 10 comprises an access point (AP).

21. A wireless communication network comprising two or more stations, wherein a station comprises:

a transmitter operably coupled to a beamformer and to two or more antennas to transmit a directional beam which includes a poll request frame, wherein the poll request frame includes a time offset for sending a poll response frame;

a receiver to receive the poll response frame with a channel bandwidth allocation request and a target device address; and

a bandwidth allocator to dynamically allocate a channel bandwidth according to the channel bandwidth allocation request.

22. The wireless communication network of claim 21, wherein the bandwidth allocator is to initiate a grant period to transmit a polling grant frame to perform a channel bandwidth grant during the grant period.

23. The wireless communication network of claim 21, wherein the bandwidth allocator is to initiate a polling period to transmit the polling request and the polling response.

24. The wireless communication network of claim 23, wherein the bandwidth allocator is to schedule a response time slot.

25. The wireless communication network of claim 21, wherein during the grant period the bandwidth allocator is able to truncate and expend the allocated channel bandwidth.

26. The wireless communication network of claim 25, wherein a bandwidth truncation is perform by:

receiving a bandwidth truncating message;

obtaining knowledge on a channel bandwidth usage; and

transmitting a polling grant frame with a required bandwidth according to the channel bandwidth usage.

27. The wireless communication network of claim 26, wherein obtaining comprises:

transmitting a request frame which includes a goal of allocating a link free up time to another link.

28. The wireless communication network of claim 26, wherein a bandwidth expansion preformed by:

the receiver to receive a channel bandwidth extension message; and

the bandwidth allocator to grant a channel bandwidth extension base on a link bandwidth usage.

29. The wireless communication network of claim 28, wherein the transmitter to transmit a poll grant frame to advertise the channel bandwidth extension.

30. The wireless communication network of claim 21 comprises a wireless personal area network and the station comprises a piconet coordinator (PNC).

31. The wireless communication device of claim 21 comprises a wireless local area network and the station comprises an access point (AP).
