1. A method of releasing a door of a vehicle having a door opening and closing means and a door latching means, the door opening and closing means operative to apply an opening force to the door, whereby the door is urged in an open direction and to apply a closing force to the door, whereby the door is urged in a closed direction, the door latching means operative to move a latch to draw the door from a nominally-closed position, PN, wherein the first portion of the door is proximate to, and separated by a distance SN from, the first portion of the frame, the door compressing the seal to compression CN, to the latched, fully-closed position, PF, separated by the distance SF from the first portion of the frame, the door compressing the seal to compression CF, wherein the door is constrained in the latched, fully-closed position, PF, and move the latch to an unlatched position, the door initially in a latched, fully-closed position, PF, a first portion of the door proximate to, and separated by a distance SF from, a first portion of a door frame, the door compressing a compressible seal interposed between at least a portion of the door and at least a portion of the frame to CF, the method comprising the steps of:

  • (a) signaling the door opening and closing means to apply a closing force to the door, whereby the door is urged in the closed direction to an over-closed position, PO, the separation distance between the first portion of the door and the first portion of the frame is reduced to SO and the seal is further compressed to CO; and

    then(b) signaling the door latching means to move the latch to the unlatched position, whereby the latch moves to the unlatched position and the door is unconstrained by the latch; and

    wherein;
