Abstract

A system for the metering and delivery of small discrete volumes of liquid is comprised of a small or minimal number of inexpensive components. One such component is a movable member, such as a miniature precision reciprocating displacement pump head, which is driven by an actuator that comprises a shape memory alloy material. The operating mechanism of the system is of little or minimal complexity. The system facilitates the precise metering and delivery of the small discrete volumes of liquid. Potential applications for the system include subcutaneous, long-term, automated drug delivery, for example, the delivery of insulin to a person with diabetes. In such an application, the small, simple and inexpensive nature of the invention would allow for its use as both a portable and a disposable system.

Claims

1. A diabetes management system for treating a patient, comprising:

a blood of glucose monitor for collecting blood glucose levels in the patient;

an insulin reservoir;

an insulin pump in fluid communication with the insulin reservoir and having a plunger for reciprocating movement in a cavity, a shape memory wire attached to the plunger to move the plunger in a first direction in the cavity and a biasing spring attached to the plunger to move the plunger in a second direction in the cavity opposite to the first direction;

a pulse generating circuit including a capacitor for activating the shape memory alloy wire; and

a remote unit for wirelessly communicating with the blood glucose monitor and the insulin pump.

2. The diabetes management system of claim 1, wherein the blood glucose monitor and at least a portion of the insulin pump are disposable, and wherein the remote unit and pulse generating circuit are reusable.

3. The diabetes management system of claim 1, wherein the insulin pump and the pulse generating circuit are integrated into a single housing.

4. The diabetes management system of claim 3, wherein the insulin pump is disposable and the shape memory alloy wire, pulse generating circuit, and capacitor are reusable.

5. The diabetes management system of claim 1, wherein the capacitor is an electrochemical capacitor.

6. The diabetes management system of claim 5, wherein the electrochemical capacitor has a high capacitance and low-equivalent series resistance.

7. The diabetes management system of claim 1, wherein the cavity has a first limit and a second limit to limit the distance the plunger moves within the cavity thereby providing a precise amount of insulin delivery per plunger stroke.

8. The diabetes management system of claim 7, wherein as the shape memory alloy wire is heated by electrical energy from the capacitor, the wire shortens and moves the plunger in the cavity to the first limit thereby pulling insulin into the cavity from the insulin reservoir.

9. The diabetes management system of claim 8, wherein the insulin reservoir is collapsible.

10. The diabetes management system of claim 7, wherein as the shape memory alloy wire cools, the biasing spring moves the plunger in the cavity to the second limit thereby pushing insulin out of the cavity and into the patient.

11. The diabetes management system of claim 1, wherein the insulin pump includes an electrical energy source.

12. The diabetes management system of claim 11, wherein the electrical energy source is a replaceable battery.

13. The diabetes management system of claim 12, wherein the battery is substantially electrically isolated from the shape memory alloy wire.

14. The diabetes management system of claim 12, wherein the battery provides electrical energy to the capacitor.

15. The diabetes management system of claim 14, wherein the capacitor is a low-equivalent series resistance electrochemical capacitor.

16. The diabetes management system of claim 12, wherein the battery provides electrical energy to the pulse generating circuit.

17. The diabetes management system of claim 16, wherein the pulse generating circuit is a programmable digital pulse generating circuit.

18. The diabetes management system of claim 17, wherein the programmable digital timing circuit includes a transistor switch.

19. The diabetes management system of claim 18, wherein the capacitor has a high capacitance.

20. The diabetes management system of claim 19, wherein the battery and the capacitor are connected to each other in parallel and are connected to the shape memory alloy wire through the transistor switch.

21. The diabetes management system of claim 20, wherein the battery charges the capacitor with electrical energy when the transistor switch is open.

22. The diabetes management system of claim 21, wherein the capacitor provides electrical energy to the shape memory alloy wire when the transistor switch is closed.

23. The diabetes management system of claim 1, wherein the shape memory alloy wire is up to 40 mm long.

24. The diabetes management system of claim 1, wherein the shape memory alloy wire is 125 microns in diameter.

25. The diabetes management system of claim 1, wherein the plunger is attached to the shape memory alloy wire.

26. The diabetes management system of claim 1, wherein the plunger is attached to a pivoting linkage assembly.

27. The diabetes management system of claim 1, wherein the shape memory alloy wire and the biasing spring are attached to a pivoting linkage assembly for imparting reciprocating movement to the plunger.

28. The diabetes management system of claim 1, wherein the plunger pumps 0.1 microliter of insulin into the patient per each pump cycle.

29. The diabetes management system of claim 28, wherein the insulin pump has an effective maximum of 3000 cycles.

30. The diabetes management system of claim 1, wherein the pulse generating circuit generates an electrical pulse duration lasting about 0.15 seconds.

31. A diabetes management system for treating a patient, comprising:

a blood of glucose monitor for collecting blood glucose levels in the patient;

an insulin pump having a plunger for reciprocating movement in a cavity, a shape memory wire attached to the plunger to move the plunger in a first direction in the cavity and a biasing spring attached to the plunger to move the plunger in a second direction in the cavity opposite to the first direction;

a timing circuit and an electrical energy storage device for activating the shape memory alloy wire; and

a remote unit for wirelessly communicating with the blood glucose monitor and the insulin pump.

32. The diabetes management system of claim 31, wherein the blood glucose monitor and at least a portion of the insulin pump are disposable, and wherein the remote unit and timing circuit are reusable.

33. The diabetes management system of claim 31, wherein the insulin pump and the timing circuit are integrated into a single housing.

34. The diabetes management system of claim 33, wherein the insulin pump is disposable and the shape memory alloy wire, timing circuit, and electrical energy storage device are reusable.

35. The diabetes management system of claim 31, wherein the electrical energy storage device is a capacitor.

36. The diabetes management system of claim 35, wherein the capacitor is an electrochemical capacitor having a high capacitance and low-equivalent series resistance.

37. The diabetes management system of claim 31, wherein the cavity has a first limit and a second limit to limit the distance the plunger moves within the cavity thereby providing a precise amount of insulin delivery per plunger stroke.

38. The diabetes management system of claim 37, wherein as the shape memory alloy wire is heated by electrical energy from the electrical energy storage device, the wire shortens and moves the plunger in the cavity to the first limit thereby pulling insulin into the cavity from an insulin reservoir.

39. The diabetes management system of claim 38, wherein the insulin reservoir is collapsible.

40. The diabetes management system of claim 37, wherein as the shape memory alloy wire cools, the biasing spring moves the plunger in the cavity to the second limit thereby pushing insulin out of the cavity and into the patient.

41. The diabetes management system of claim 31, wherein the insulin pump includes an electrical energy source.

42. The diabetes management system of claim 41, wherein the electrical energy source is a replaceable battery.

43. The diabetes management system of claim 42, wherein the battery is substantially electrically isolated from the shape memory alloy wire.

44. The diabetes management system of claim 42, wherein the battery provides electrical energy to the electrical energy storage device.

45. The diabetes management system of claim 44, wherein the electrical energy storage device is a capacitor.

46. The diabetes management system of claim 42, wherein the battery provides electrical energy to the timing circuit.

47. The diabetes management system of claim 46, wherein the timing circuit is a programmable digital timing circuit.

48. The diabetes management system of claim 47, wherein the timing circuit includes a transistor switch.

49. The diabetes management system of claim 48, wherein the electrical energy storage device is a capacitor.

50. The diabetes management system of claim 49, wherein the battery and the capacitor are connected to each other in parallel and are connected to the shape memory alloy wire through the transistor switch.

51. The diabetes management system of claim 50, wherein the battery charges the capacitor with electrical energy when the transistor switch is open.

52. The diabetes management system of claim 51, wherein the capacitor provides electrical energy to the shape memory alloy wire when the transistor switch is closed.

53. The diabetes management system of claim 31, wherein the cavity includes a syringe barrel shape.

54. The diabetes management system of claim 31, wherein the shape memory alloy wire is 125 microns in diameter.

55. The diabetes management system of claim 31, wherein the plunger is attached to the shape memory alloy wire.

56. The diabetes management system of claim 31, wherein the plunger is attached to a pivoting linkage assembly.

57. The diabetes management system of claim 31, wherein the shape memory alloy wire and the biasing spring are attached to a pivoting linkage assembly for imparting reciprocating movement to the plunger.

58. The diabetes management system of claim 31, wherein the plunger pumps 0.1 microliter of insulin into the patient per each pump cycle.

59. The diabetes management system of claim 58, wherein the insulin pump has an effective maximum of 3000 cycles.

60. The diabetes management system of claim 31, wherein the timing circuit generates an electrical pulse duration lasting about 0.15 seconds.

61. A diabetes management system for treating a patient, comprising:

a blood of glucose monitor for collecting blood glucose levels in the patient;

an insulin reservoir;

an insulin pump in fluid communication with the insulin reservoir and having a plunger for reciprocating movement in a cavity, a nickel-titanium shape memory wire having high and low temperature phases attached to the plunger to move the plunger in a first direction in the cavity and a biasing spring attached to the plunger to move the plunger in a second direction in the cavity opposite to the first direction;

a pulse generating circuit including a capacitor for activating the shape memory alloy wire to shape transform the wire into a high temperature phase; and

a remote unit for wirelessly communicating with the blood glucose monitor and the insulin pump.

62. The diabetes management system of claim 61, wherein the blood glucose monitor and at least a portion of the insulin pump are disposable, and wherein the remote unit and pulse generating circuit are reusable.

63. The diabetes management system of claim 61, wherein the insulin pump and the pulse generating circuit are integrated into a single housing.

64. The diabetes management system of claim 63, wherein the insulin pump is disposable and the shape memory alloy wire, pulse generating circuit, and capacitor are reusable.

65. The diabetes management system of claim 61, wherein the capacitor is an electrochemical capacitor.

66. The diabetes management system of claim 65, wherein the electrochemical capacitor has a high capacitance and low-equivalent series resistance.

67. The diabetes management system of claim 61, wherein the cavity has a first limit and a second limit to limit the distance the plunger moves within the cavity thereby providing a precise amount of insulin delivery per plunger stroke.

68. The diabetes management system of claim 67, wherein as the shape memory alloy wire is heated by electrical energy from the capacitor, the wire shortens and moves the plunger in the cavity to the first limit thereby pulling insulin into the cavity from the insulin reservoir.

69. The diabetes management system of claim 68, wherein the insulin reservoir is collapsible.

70. The diabetes management system of claim 67, wherein as the shape memory alloy wire cools, the biasing spring moves the plunger in the cavity to the second limit thereby pushing insulin out of the cavity and into the patient.

71. The diabetes management system of claim 61, wherein the insulin pump includes an electrical energy source.

72. The diabetes management system of claim 71, wherein the electrical energy source is a replaceable battery.

73. The diabetes management system of claim 72, wherein the battery is substantially electrically isolated from the shape memory alloy wire.

74. The diabetes management system of claim 72, wherein the battery provides electrical energy to the capacitor.

75. The diabetes management system of claim 74, wherein the capacitor is a low-equivalent series resistance electrochemical capacitor.

76. The diabetes management system of claim 72, wherein the battery provides electrical energy to the pulse generating circuit.

77. The diabetes management system of claim 76, wherein the pulse generating circuit is a programmable digital pulse generating circuit.

78. The diabetes management system of claim 77, wherein the programmable digital timing circuit includes a transistor switch.

79. The diabetes management system of claim 78, wherein the capacitor has a high capacitance.

80. The diabetes management system of claim 79, wherein the battery and the capacitor are connected to each other in parallel and are connected to the shape memory alloy wire through the transistor switch.

81. The diabetes management system of claim 80, wherein the battery charges the capacitor with electrical energy when the transistor switch is open.

82. The diabetes management system of claim 81, wherein the capacitor provides electrical energy to the shape memory alloy wire when the transistor switch is closed.

83. The diabetes management system of claim 61, wherein the shape memory alloy wire is up to 40 mm long.

84. The diabetes management system of claim 61, wherein the shape memory alloy wire is 125 microns in diameter.

85. The diabetes management system of claim 61, wherein the plunger is attached to the shape memory alloy wire.

86. The diabetes management system of claim 61, wherein the plunger is attached to a pivoting linkage assembly.
