Abstract

A surgical stapler is provided having a pair of jaws including a staple containing cartridge and an anvil. Buttress material is releasable affixed to the staple containing cartridge and the anvil. One of the jaws includes a pair of longitudinal projections at a first end of the jaw and configured to frictionally engage corresponding slots in a first end the buttress material. One of the jaws includes a post at a second end of the jaw. The buttress material includes a hole in a second end of the buttress material for receipt of the post.

Claims

1. A surgical stapler, comprising:

a pair of opposing jaws including a staple cartridge and an anvil, each jaw defining an opposing facing surface with respect to the other jaw and defining a periphery, at least one jaw of the pair of jaws including at least two projections, the at least two projections disposed within an interior of the periphery of the opposing facing surface of the at least one jaw; and

a buttress material releasably secured within the interior of the periphery of the opposing facing surface of the at least one jaw, the buttress material including at least one recess for receipt of a respective one of the at least two projections, wherein the at least two projections facilitate securement of the buttress material to the at least one jaw.

The surgical stapler according to claim 1, wherein the at least two projections extending longitudinally from a first end of the at least one jaw and further comprising at least one projection extending longitudinally from a second end of the at least one jaw opposite the first end of the at least one jaw.

3. The surgical stapler according to claim 1, wherein each of the at least two projections includes a neck portion and a bulbous portion.

4. The surgical stapler according to claim 1, wherein the at least one jaw includes a longitudinally extending knife slot, the at least two projections being separated by the knife slot.

5. The surgical stapler according to claim 1, wherein each of the at least two projections define a post and the buttress material includes a hole for receipt of the post.

6. The surgical stapler according to claim 5, wherein at least one of the posts is split to allow passage of a knife therebetween.

The surgical stapler according to claim 1, wherein the at least two projections extend longitudinally from a first end of the at least one jaw, and wherein the surgical stapler further comprises at least two projections extending longitudinally from a second end of the at least one jaw opposite the first end of the at least one jaw.

8. The surgical stapler according to claim 7, wherein at least one jaw includes a longitudinally extending knife slot disposed between the at least two projections extending from the first end of the at least one jaw and between the at least two projections extending from the second end of the at least one jaw.

9. A jaw assembly for use with a surgical instrument, the jaw assembly comprising:

a pair of jaws including a staple cartridge and an anvil, each of the pair of jaws having a proximal portion and a distal portion and defining a tissue contacting surface, at least one of the jaws including at least one projection extending from the tissue contacting surface near the proximal portion of the at least one jaw and at least one projection extending from the tissue contacting surface near the distal portion of the at least one jaw; and

a buttress material overlying the tissue contacting surface and being releasably affixed to the at least one jaw, the buttress material including at least one recess for receipt of the at least two projections.

10. The jaw assembly according to claim 9, wherein each of the at least two projections includes a neck portion and a bulbous portion.

11. The jaw assembly according to claim 9, wherein the at least one jaw includes a longitudinally extending knife slot, the at least two projections being separated by the knife slot.

12. The jaw assembly according to claim 9, wherein the at least one jaw includes two sets of the at least two projections.

13. The jaw assembly according to claim 12, wherein the at least one jaw includes a longitudinally extending knife slot, the knife slot separating the two sets of the at least two projections.

14. The jaw assembly according to claim 9, wherein the at least one jaw includes a post near the distal end portion thereof, and wherein the buttress material includes a hole for receipt of the post.

15. The jaw assembly according to claim 14, wherein the post is split to allow passage of a knife therebetween.

16. The jaw assembly according to claim 14, wherein the post is solid.

17. The jaw assembly according to claim 14, wherein the post forms a mushroom shaped protrusion having a cap, the cap defining a flange for engagement with a portion of the buttress material.

18. The jaw assembly according to claim 17, wherein the post is split.

19. The jaw assembly according to claim 9, wherein the at least two projections extend longitudinally from a first end of the at least one jaw, and wherein the jaw assembly further comprises at least two projections extending longitudinally from a second end of the at least one jaw opposite the first end of the at least one jaw.

20. The jaw assembly according to claim 19, wherein at least one jaw includes a longitudinally extending knife slot disposed between the at least two projections
