Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for producing an extract which is capable of inducing an antioxidant stress response comprising the step of treating an extract from organic material with UV light, said extract being derived from a non-mammalian cell or a non-mammalian organism and said cell or organism being capable of synthesizing polyunsaturated fatty acids. Furthermore, an extract capable of inducing an antioxidant stress response produced in accordance with the inventive methods, in particular an extract capable of inducing an antioxidant stress response for the preparation of a cosmetic composition is disclosed. The present invention also relates to a cosmetic composition comprising the inventive extract obtainable by the method provided herein.

Claims

1. A method for producing an extract capable of inducing an antioxidant stress response comprising the step of treating an extract from organic material with UV light, wherein said extract is derived from (a) non-mammalian cell(s) or a non-mammalian organism capable of synthesizing (poly)unsaturated fatty acids.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said extract from organic material comprises at least one polyunsaturated fatty acid with at least 4 double bonds.

3. The method according to claim 1, wherein said extract from organic material comprises at least one (poly)unsaturated fatty acid which comprises at least 20 C atoms.

4. The method according to, claim 1 wherein said (poly)unsaturated fatty acid is a fatty acid group of a lipid.

5. The method according to, claim 1 wherein said extract from organic material is derived from a non-mammalian single- or multi-cellular organism capable of producing (poly)unsaturated fatty acids selected from the group consisting of bacteria, protists, fungi, fish and plants.

6. The method according to claim 5, wherein said organism is selected from the group consisting of Shewanella spec., Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Schizochytrium spec., Mortierella alpina, Marchantia polymorpha and Thelypteris noveboracensis.

7. The method according to claim 5, wherein said plant is a lower plant.

8. The method according to claim 7, wherein said lower plant is a bryophyte or algae.

9. The method according to claim 8, wherein said bryophyte is selected from the group consisting of liverworts (Marchantiophyta), hornworts (Anthoceratophyta) and mosses (Bryophyta).

10. The method according to claim 9, wherein said bryophyte (moss) belongs to the genus Physcomitrella.

11. The method according to claim 10, wherein said moss is Physcomitrella patens.

12. The method according to, claim 1 wherein said UV light is capable of mildly oxidizing (poly)unsaturated fatty acids or groups derived from (poly)unsaturated fatty acids.

13. The method according to claim 1, wherein said UV light is long wave UV light.

14. The method according to, claim 1 wherein said UV light is UVA-1.

15. The method according to, claim 1 wherein said UVA-1 has a wavelength from 315 to 400 nm.

16. The method according to, claim 1 wherein said UVA-1 has a wavelength from 340 to 390 nm.

17. The method according to, claim 1 wherein a fluency of at least 1 J/cm² to 200 J/cm² of said UV light is applied.

18. The method according to, claim 1 wherein a fluency of at least 10 J/cm² to 80 J/cm² of said UV light is applied.

19. The method according to, claim 1 wherein a fluency of 80 J/cm² of said UV light is applied

20. The method according to, claim 1 wherein said extract from organic material is a crude extract.

21. The method according to, claim 1 wherein said extract from organic material is a purified extract.

22. The method according to, claim 1 wherein said extract from organic material is a lipid extract.

23. The method according to claim 22, wherein said lipid extract from organic material comprises (a) phospholipids(s).

24. The method according to, claim 1 wherein said (poly)unsaturated fatty acid or group derived therefrom is or is derived from arachidonic acid, docosahexeanoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or docosapentaenoic acid (DPA).

25. The method according to, claim 1 wherein said (poly)unsaturated fatty acid or group derived therefrom is or is derived from arachidonic acid.

26. The method according to, claim 23 wherein said phospholipid is 1-palmitoyl-2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine (PAPC).

27. The method according to, claim 1 wherein said extract capable of inducing an antioxidant stress response is a lipid extract.

28. The method according to claim 27, wherein said lipid extract comprise(s) at least one group derived from a mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid.

29. The method according to claim 27, wherein said lipid extract capable of inducing an antioxidant stress response comprises (a) mildly oxidized lipid(s).

30. The method according to claim 28, wherein said group derived from a mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid comprises at least 20 C atoms.

31. The method according to claim 28 wherein said group derived from a mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid comprises at least 3 O atoms.

32. The method according to, claim 28 wherein said group derived from a mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid comprises an epoxyisoprostanoid group.

33. The method according to claim 32, wherein said epoxyisoprostanoid group is an epoxyisoprostanoid E2 group.

34. The method according to, claim 27 wherein said lipid extract comprises (a) phospholipid(s).

35. The method according to, claim 28 wherein said mildly oxidized lipid is 1-palmitoyl-2-(epoxyisoprostane E2)-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine (PEIPC).

36. An extract capable of inducing an antioxidant stress response as defined in claim 1 or obtainable by the method of claim 1 or an extract comprising a mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid.

37. An extract capable of inducing an antioxidant stress response as defined in claim 1 or obtainable by the method of claim 1 or an extract comprising a mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid for the preparation of a cosmetic composition.

38. An extract capable of inducing an antioxidant stress response as defined in claim 1 or obtainable by the method of claim 1 or an extract comprising a mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid for the treatment, amelioration or prevention of symptoms of ageing which are related to oxidative stress.

39. The extract comprising a mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid of, claim 36 wherein said mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid comprises at least 20 C atoms.

40. The extract comprising a mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid of, claim 36 wherein said mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid comprises at least 3 O atoms.

41. The extract comprising a mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid of claim 36, wherein said mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid comprises an epoxyisoprostanoid group.

42. The extract comprising a mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid of claim 41, wherein said epoxyisoprostanoid group is an epoxyisoprostanoid E2 group.

43. A cosmetic composition comprising an extract capable of inducing an antioxidant stress response as defined in claim 1 or obtainable by the method of claim 1 or an extract comprising a mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid.

44. A cosmetic method of treating, ameliorating or preventing symptoms of ageing which are inducible by or related to oxidative stress comprising administering to a subject in need of such a treatment, prevention or amelioration an extract capable of inducing an antioxidant stress response as defined in claim 1 or obtainable by the method of claim 1 or an extract comprising a mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid.

46. An extract capable of inducing an antioxidant stress response as defined in claim 1 or obtainable by the method of claim 1 or an extract comprising a mildly oxidized (poly)unsaturated fatty acid for the treatment, amelioration or prevention of symptoms of ageing which are related to oxidative stress

or

a cosmetic method of treating, ameliorating or preventing symptoms of ageing which are inducible by or related to oxidative stress comprising administering to a subject in need of such a treatment, prevention or amelioration an extract capable of inducing an antioxidant stress response as defined in claim 1,

wherein said symptom of ageing is selected from the group consisting of skin ageing, wrinkle formation and saggy skin.
