Abstract

A method and device for treating a mammalian organism to obtain a desired local or systemic physiological or pharmacological effect is provided. The method includes administering a sustained release drug delivery system to a mammalian organism in need of such treatment at an area wherein release of an effective agent is desired and allowing the effective agent to pass through the device in a controlled.

41. A method of manufacturing a sustained drug delivery system, comprising

positioning a drug core in a tube, said drug core containing a therapeutically effective amount of an active agent, wherein said tube is dimensionally stable and capable of supporting its own weight;

cross-sectionally cutting the tube into sections; and

forming an outer layer around at least a portion of a section.

42. The method according to claim 41, wherein the outer layer is formed by dipping, dropping, spraying, or brushing the section with a solution of polymer.

43. The method according to claim 41, wherein the tube is formed of a material selected from a permeable material and an impermeable material.

44. The method according to claim 41, wherein the tube is permeable.

45. The method according to claim 41, wherein the outer layer permeable.

46. The method according to claim 41, wherein the outer layer is impermeable.

47. The method according to claim 41, further comprising positioning an end member to said tube to form a closed-end tube, said end member selected from an impermeable cap and a permeable plug.

48. A method in accordance with claim 47, wherein positioning an end member comprises joining said end member to a length of said tube to form a vessel-shaped member.

49. A method in accordance with claim 48, wherein said joining comprises abutting said end member against a first end of said length of tube, and leaving a second end of said length of tube uncovered.

50. A method in accordance with claim 48, wherein said joining comprises coupling an impermeable cap to said length of tube, and wherein forming an outer layer comprises forming a permeable outer layer.

51. A method in accordance with claim 48, wherein said joining comprises joining a permeable plug to said length of tube, and wherein forming an outer layer comprises forming an impermeable outer layer.

52. A method in accordance with claim 51, further comprising forming a port in said impermeable outer layer immediately adjacent to said permeable plug.

53. A method in accordance with claim 52, wherein forming a port further comprises forming a port immediately adjacent to an end surface of said plug opposite said drug core.

54. A method in accordance with claim 52, wherein forming a port further comprises forming a port immediately adjacent to a radial surface of said plug.

55. A method in accordance with claim 52, wherein forming a port further comprises forming a plurality of ports.
