1. An instrument for use in forming and using a portal incision in a hip arthroplasty procedure to implant an acetabular implant, comprising:
- a main body, a handle on an upper end of said main body, said main body including a lengthwise straight portion extending to a lower end of said main body,an angled sleeve member fixedly formed on said lower end of said main body, said angled sleeve member having a sleeve bore therethrough,said handle positioned on said main body such that a position of said handle indicates that the main body is in a proper position,an arm, said arm having a straight first arm portion and a straight second arm portion extending contiguously from said first arm portion, said first arm portion extending perpendicularly from said main body below said handle, said second arm portion downwardly angled from said first arm portion,a guide ring fixedly formed on an end of said second arm portion, said guide ring having a guide bore therethrough, and said guide bore axially aligned with said sleeve bore of said angled sleeve member to thereby guide a trocar or an impactor through said guide bore and into alignment with said sleeve bore.

Abstract
The invention is directed to an instrument for use in minimally invasive hip surgery. In particular, the instrument is useful for both alignment and insertion/impaction of an acetabular shell. Furthermore, the instrument is suitable for assuring the shell is impacted with the proper abduction and version in left or right hips.
