Abstract

In general, the disclosure relates to the delivery of therapy according to a detected posture state of a patient. The disclosure contemplates a variety of techniques for managing therapy delivered to a patent, including patient and clinician interaction with a medical device configured to deliver therapy according to posture state. In one example, the disclosure relates to a technique including receiving an indication from a user indicating that at least one aspect of therapy delivered to a patient from a medical device should be suspended, wherein the at least one aspect of the therapy is delivered from the medical device to the patient according to a detected posture state of the patient; and suspending the at least one aspect of the therapy delivered from the medical device in response to receipt of the indication.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving an indication from a user indicating that at least one aspect of therapy delivered to a patient from a medical device should be suspended, wherein the at least one aspect of the therapy is delivered from the medical device to the patient according to a detected posture state of the patient; and

suspending the at least one aspect of the therapy delivered from the medical device in response to receipt of the indication.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the therapy comprises electrical stimulation therapy.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the at least one aspect of the stimulation therapy comprises at least one stimulation therapy group.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the user comprises the patient and the external device comprises a patient programmer.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein all aspects of the therapy delivered according to the detected posture state of the patient are suspended in response to the indication.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein suspending the at least one aspect of the therapy comprises suspending less than all aspects of the therapy that are delivered according to the detected posture state of the patient.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising resuming the at least one aspect of therapy that was suspended.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising receiving an indication from the user that at least one aspect of the therapy should be resumed, and wherein resuming the at least one aspect of the therapy comprises resuming the at least one aspect of the therapy based on the receipt of the indication that the therapy should be resumed.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein resuming the at least one aspect of the therapy comprises resuming the at least one aspect of the therapy based at least in part upon expiration of a time period.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising delivering therapy to the patient not according to the detected posture state of patient while suspending the at least one aspect of the therapy.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising detecting the posture state of the patient while suspending the at least one aspect of the therapy.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiving an indication from a user comprises receiving an indication from a user via an external device.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the indication from the user comprises an indication that the patient is about to engage in an undertaking, wherein suspending the at least one aspect of the therapy comprises suspending at least one aspect of the therapy associated with the undertaking indicated.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the user comprises the patient, and the indication from the user comprises an indication automatically generated based on detection of abnormal patient activity.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising presenting an indication to the patient indicating the detection of abnormal activity.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising receiving an indication from the patient verifying the abnormal activity.

17. A medical device comprising:

a therapy module that delivers therapy to a patient according to a detected posture state of the patient; and

a processor configured to receive an indication from a user indicating that at least one aspect of therapy delivered to a patient should be suspended, and control the therapy module to suspend the at least one aspect of the therapy delivered by the therapy module in response to the receipt of the indication.

18. The medical device of claim 17, wherein the therapy comprises electrical stimulation therapy.

19. The medical device of claim 18, wherein the at least one aspect of the stimulation therapy comprises at least one stimulation therapy group active for delivery of therapy to the patient according to the detected posture state of the patient.

20. The medical device of claim 17, wherein the user comprises the patient, and wherein the processor is configured to receive the indication from an external programmer operated by the patient.

21. The medical device of claim 17, wherein the processor is configured to suspend all aspects of the therapy delivered according to the detected posture state of the patient in response to the indication.

22. The medical device of claim 17, wherein the processor is configured to suspend less than all aspects of the therapy delivered according to the detected posture state of the patient in response to the indication.

23. The medical device of claim 17, wherein the processor is configured to resume the at least one aspect of the therapy that was suspended.

24. The medical device of claim 23, wherein the processor is configured to receive an indication from the user that at least one aspect of the therapy should be resumed, and control the therapy module to resume the at least one aspect of the therapy based on receipt of an indication.

25. The medical device of claim 23, wherein the processor is configured to resume the at least one aspect of the therapy that was suspended based at least in part upon expiration of a time period.

26. The medical device of claim 17, wherein the processor is configured to control the therapy module to deliver of therapy to the patient that is not according to the detected posture state of patient while the at least one aspect of the therapy is suspended.

27. The medical device of claim 17, wherein the processor is configured to detect the posture state of the patient while the at least one aspect of the therapy is suspended.

28. The medical device of claim 17, wherein the processor is configured to receive the indication from an external device operated by the user.

29. The medical device of claim 17, wherein the indication from the user comprises an indication that the patient is about to engage in an undertaking, wherein the processor is configured to control the therapy module to suspend the at least one aspect of the therapy associated with the indicated undertaking.

30. The medical device of claim 17, wherein the indication from the user comprises an indication generated based on the detection of abnormal activity of the patient.

31. The medical device of claim 30, wherein the processor is configured to receive an indication from the patient verifying the abnormal activity, and control the therapy module to suspend the one or more aspects of the therapy based on the receipt of the indication.

32. A system comprising:

means for receiving an indication from a user indicating that at least one aspect of therapy delivered to a patient from a medical device should be suspended, wherein the at least one aspect of the therapy is delivered from the medical device to the patient according to a detected posture state of the patient; and

means for suspending the at least one aspect of the therapy in response to receipt of the indication.

33. A computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions for causing one or more processors to:

receive an indication from a user via an external device indicating that at least one aspect of therapy delivered to a patient from a medical device should be suspended, wherein the at least one aspect of the therapy is delivered from the medical device to the patient according to a detected posture state of the patient; and

suspend the at least one aspect of the therapy in response to receipt of the indication.

34. A method comprising:

receiving input from a user indicating that at least one aspect of therapy that is delivered by a medical device according to a detected posture state of a patient should be suspended;

generating an indication indicating that the at least one aspect of therapy that is delivered according to the detected posture state of the patient should be suspended based on the receipt of the input from the user; and

sending the indication to the medical device that delivers the therapy to the patient according to the detected posture of the patient.

35. A device comprising:

a user interface configured to receive an input from a user indicating that at least one aspect of therapy that is delivered by a medical device according to a detected posture state of a patient should be suspended; and

a processor configured to generate an indication indicating that the at least one aspect of therapy that is delivered by the medical device according to the detected posture state of the patient should be suspended based on the receipt of the input from the user, and send the indication to the medical device that delivers the therapy to the patient according to the detected posture of the patient.

36. A system comprising:

means for receiving an input from a user indicating that at least one aspect of therapy that is delivered by a medical device according to a detected posture state of a patient should be suspended;

means for generating an indication indicating that the at least one aspect of therapy that is delivered according to the detected posture state of the patient should be suspended based on the receipt of the input from the user; and

means for sending the indication to the medical device that delivers the therapy to the patient according to the detected posture of the patient.

37. A computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions for causing one or more processors to:

receive an input from a user indicating that at least one aspect of therapy that is delivered by a medical device according to a detected posture state of a patient should be suspended;

generate an indication indicating that the at least one aspect of therapy that is delivered according to the detected posture state of the patient should be suspended based on the receipt of the input from the user; and

send the indication to the medical device that delivers the therapy to the patient according to the detected posture of the patient.
