Abstract

A set of data pertaining to artists and other content creators is retrieved periodically from various Internet-connected sources, the data being characterized as both quantitative and qualitative data. The data is analyzed through various means, including sentiment analysis, to produce quantitative information, including a score or set of scores, that is descriptive of an artist'"'"'s popularity as well as the ranking of an artist among other artists within a category or set of categories.

Claims

1. A computer system for computing the popularity of one or more artists, comprising:

one or more client computers;

one or more information servers, wherein each information server contains or provides data related to one or more artists, and wherein at least one information server is accessible through the Internet;

a popularity profile server implementing computer instructions to;

(a) obtain data related to each artist from a plurality of information servers, with at least one information server having data obtainable through the Internet; and

(b) calculate a set of scores for each artist based on characteristics of the data obtained, wherein a set of scores is comprised of one or more scores;

one or more network interfaces connecting the popularity profile server, the one or more information servers, and the one or more client computers to a network; and

a database for storing some or all of the data obtained and the scores calculated.

2. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server for calculating a set of scores includes:

assigning a weighting factor to each of the data obtained; and

calculating the set of scores for each artist based on the assigned weighting factors in addition to characteristics of the data obtained.

3. The computer system of claim 2, wherein the popularity profile server includes computer instructions for identifying data obtained as quantitative or qualitative data.

4. The computer system of claim 3, wherein the popularity profile server includes computer instructions for assigning to each of the qualitative data a number based on characteristics of the qualitative data.

5. The computer system of claim 4, wherein the popularity profile server includes computer instructions for assigning a number to qualitative data by means of sentiment analysis.

6. The computer system of claim 5, wherein sentiment analysis includes computer instructions for assigning a first number where the qualitative data is classified as favorable to the artist or a second number where the qualitative data is classified as unfavorable to the artist.

7. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server for calculating a set of scores includes instructions for calculating a set of scores for each information server from which data is obtained for an artist, whereby the set of scores for each information source is not based on data obtained from other information sources.

8. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server for calculating a set of scores includes instructions for calculating a set of scores for each category of a set of categories by which the obtained data is classified.

9. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server for obtaining data includes instructions for:

obtaining one or more sets of data, wherein an initial set is obtained and any subsequent set of data is obtained after an interval of time passes between obtaining the last set and obtaining a new set; and

storing some or all of the obtained data in a database.

10. The computer system of claim 9, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server includes instructions for calculating a set of scores each for one or more of the sets of data obtained.

11. The computer system of claim 10, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server for calculating a set of scores includes instructions for:

calculating a momentum factor based on two or more sets of scores; and

calculating one or more sets of scores based on the momentum factor and characteristics of data obtained.

12. The computer system of claim 10, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server for calculating a set of scores includes instructions for:

calculating a momentum factor based on two or more sets of data; and

calculating one or more sets of scores based on a momentum factor and characteristics of data obtained.

13. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the popularity profile server further comprises computer instructions for:

assigning to an artist a number indicating the ranked order of the artist based on a comparison of the artist'"'"'s set of scores to other artists'"'"' set of scores.

14. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the popularity profile server further comprises computer instructions for:

generating a list of a plurality of artists in ranked order based on a comparison of the artists'"'"' set of scores to one another.

15. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the popularity profile server transfers information to a client computer, and wherein the information transferred includes:

some or all of the data obtained, or a set of scores, or a combination thereof.

16. The computer system of claim 14, wherein the popularity profile server transfers information to a client computer, and wherein the information transferred includes:

some or all of data obtained, or a set of scores, or a list of a plurality of artists in ranked order, or a combination thereof.

17. The computer system of claim 2, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server for calculating a set of scores includes instructions for calculating a set of scores for each category of a set of categories by which the obtained data is classified.

18. The computer system of claim 2, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server for obtaining data includes instructions for:

obtaining one or more sets of data, wherein an initial set is obtained and any subsequent set of data is obtained after an interval of time passes between obtaining the last set and obtaining a new set; and

storing some or all of the obtained data in a database.

19. The computer system of claim 18, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server includes instructions for calculating a set of scores each for one or more of the sets of data obtained.

20. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server for calculating a set of scores includes instructions for:

calculating a momentum factor based on two or more sets of scores; and

calculating one or more sets of scores based on the momentum factor and characteristics of data obtained.

21. The computer system of claim 19, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server for calculating a set of scores includes instructions for:

calculating a momentum factor based on two or more sets of data; and

calculating one or more sets of scores based on a momentum factor and characteristics of data obtained.

22. The computer system of claim 2, wherein the popularity profile server further comprises computer instructions for:

assigning to an artist a number indicating the ranked order of the artist based on a comparison of the artist'"'"'s set of scores to other artists'"'"' set of scores.

23. The computer system of claim 2, wherein the popularity profile server further comprises computer instructions for:

generating a list of a plurality of artists in ranked order based on a comparison of the artists'"'"' set of scores to one another.

24. The computer system of claim 2, wherein the popularity profile server transfers information to a client computer, wherein the information transferred includes:

some or all of the data obtained, or a set of scores, or a combination thereof.

25. The computer system of claim 23, wherein the popularity profile server transfers information to a client computer, wherein the information transferred includes:

some or all of data obtained, or a set of scores, or a list of a plurality of artists in ranked order, or a combination thereof.

26. The computer system of claim 4, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server for calculating a set of scores includes instructions for calculating a set of scores for each category of a set of categories by which the obtained data is classified.

27. The computer system of claim 4, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server for obtaining data includes computer instructions for:

obtaining one or more sets of data, wherein an initial set is obtained and any subsequent set of data is obtained after an interval of time passes between obtaining the last set and obtaining a new set; and

storing some or all of the obtained data in a database.

28. The computer system of claim 27, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server includes instructions for calculating a set of scores each for one or more of the sets of data obtained.

29. The computer system of claim 28, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server for calculating a set of scores includes instructions for:

calculating a momentum factor based on two or more sets of scores; and

calculating one or more sets of scores based on the momentum factor and characteristics of data obtained.

30. The computer system of claim 28, wherein the computer instructions implemented by the popularity profile server for calculating a set of scores includes instructions for:

calculating a momentum factor based on two or more sets of data obtained; and

calculating one or more sets of scores based on a momentum factor and characteristics of data obtained.

31. The computer system of claim 4, wherein the popularity profile server further comprises computer instructions for:

assigning to an artist a number indicating the ranked order of the artist based on a comparison of the artist'"'"'s set of scores to other artists'"'"' set of scores.

32. The computer system of claim 4, wherein the popularity profile server further comprises computer instructions for:

generating a list of a plurality of artists in ranked order based on a comparison of the artists'"'"' set of scores to one another.

33. The computer system of claim 4, wherein the popularity profile server transfers information to a client computer, wherein the information transferred includes:

some or all of the data obtained, or a set of scores, or a combination thereof.

34. The computer system of claim 32, wherein the popularity profile server transfers information to a client computer, and wherein the information transferred includes:

some or all of data obtained, or a set of scores, or a list of a plurality of artists in ranked order, or a combination thereof.

35. A computer implemented method for computing the popularity of one or more artists, comprising:

obtaining data related to each artist from a plurality of information sources, with at least one source having data obtainable through the Internet; and

calculating a set of scores for each artist based on characteristics of the data obtained, wherein a set of scores is comprised of one or more scores.

36. The computer implemented method of claim 35, wherein calculating a set of scores includes:

assigning a weighting factor to each of the data obtained; and

calculating the set of scores for each artist based on the assigned weighting factors in addition to characteristics of the data obtained.

37. The computer implemented method of claim 36, wherein obtaining includes identifying the data as either quantitative data or qualitative data.

38. The computer implemented method of claim 37, wherein each of the qualitative data is assigned a number based on characteristics of the qualitative data.

39. The computer implemented method of claim 38, wherein a number is assigned to qualitative data by means of sentiment analysis.

40. The computer implemented method of claim 39, wherein sentiment analysis includes assigning a first number where the qualitative data is classified as favorable to the artist or a second number where the qualitative data is classified as unfavorable to the artist.

41. The computer implemented method of claim 35, wherein calculating a set of scores includes calculating a set of scores for each information source from which data is obtained for an artist, whereby the set of scores for each information source is not based on data obtained from other information sources.

42. The computer implemented method of claim 35, wherein calculating a set of scores includes calculating a set of scores for each category of a set of categories by which the obtained data is classified.

43. The computer implemented method of claim 35, wherein obtaining data includes:

obtaining one or more sets of data, wherein an initial set is obtained and any subsequent set of data is obtained after an interval of time passes between obtaining the last set and obtaining a new set; and

storing some or all of the obtained data in a database.

44. The computer implemented method of claim 43, wherein calculating a set of scores includes calculating a set of scores for each set of data obtained.

45. The computer implemented method of claim 44, wherein calculating a set of scores includes:

calculating a momentum factor based on two or more sets of scores; and

calculating one or more sets of scores based on the momentum factor and characteristics of data obtained.

46. The computer implemented method of claim 44, wherein calculating a set of scores includes:

calculating a momentum factor based on two or more sets of data; and

calculating one or more sets of scores based on a momentum factor and characteristics of data obtained.

47. The computer implemented method of claim 35, further comprising:

assigning to an artist a number indicating the ranked order of the artist based on a comparison of the artist'"'"'s set of scores to other artists'"'"' set of scores.

48. The computer implemented method of claim 35, further comprising:

generating a list of a plurality of artists in ranked order based on a comparison of the artists'"'"' set of scores to one another.

49. The computer implemented method of claim 35, further comprising:

transferring information over a computer network, wherein the information transferred includes;

some or all of the data obtained, or a set of scores, or a combination thereof.

50. The computer implemented method of claim 48, further comprising:

transferring information over a computer network, wherein the information transferred includes;

some or all of data obtained, or a set of scores, or a list of a plurality of artists in ranked order, or a combination thereof.

51. The computer implemented method of claim 36, wherein calculating a set of scores includes calculating a set of scores for each category of a set of categories by which the obtained data is classified.

52. The computer implemented method of claim 36, wherein obtaining data includes:

obtaining one or more sets of data, wherein an initial set is obtained and any subsequent set of data is obtained after an interval of time passes between obtaining the last set and obtaining a new set; and

storing some or all of the obtained data in a database.

53. The computer implemented method of claim 52, wherein calculating a set of scores includes calculating a set of scores each for one or more of the sets of data obtained.

54. The computer implemented method of claim 53, wherein calculating a set of scores includes:

calculating a momentum factor based on two or more sets of scores; and

calculating one or more sets of scores based on the momentum factor and characteristics of data obtained.

55. The computer implemented method of claim 53, wherein calculating a set of scores includes:

calculating a momentum factor based on two or more sets of data obtained; and

calculating one or more sets of scores based on a momentum factor and characteristics of data obtained.

56. The computer implemented method of claim 36, further comprising:

assigning to an artist a number indicating the ranked order of the artist based on a comparison of the artist'"'"'s set of scores to other artists'"'"' set of scores.

57. The computer implemented method of claim 36, further comprising:

generating a list of a plurality of artists in ranked order based on a comparison of the artists'"'"' set of scores to one another.

58. The computer implemented method of claim 36, further comprising:

transferring information over a computer network, wherein the information transferred includes;

some or all of the data obtained, or a set of scores, or a combination thereof.

59. The computer implemented method of claim 57, further comprising:

transferring information over a computer network, wherein the information transferred includes;

some or all of data obtained, or a set of scores, or a list of a plurality of artists in ranked order, or a combination thereof.

60. The computer implemented method of claim 38, wherein calculating a set of scores includes instructions for calculating a set of scores for each category of a set of categories by which the obtained data is classified.

61. The computer implemented method of claim 38, wherein obtaining data includes:

obtaining one or more sets of data, wherein an initial set is obtained and any subsequent set of data is obtained after an interval of time passes between obtaining the last set and obtaining a new set; and

storing some or all of the obtained data in a database.

62. The computer implemented method of claim 61, wherein calculating a set of scores includes calculating a set of scores each for one or more of the sets of data obtained.

63. The computer implemented method of claim 62, wherein calculating a set of scores includes:

calculating a momentum factor based on two or more sets of scores; and

calculating one or more sets of scores based on the momentum factor and characteristics of data obtained.

64. The computer implemented method of claim 62, wherein calculating a set of scores includes:

calculating a momentum factor based on two or more sets of data obtained; and

calculating one or more sets of scores based on a momentum factor and characteristics of data obtained.

65. The computer implemented method of claim 38, further comprising:

assigning to an artist a number indicating the ranked order of the artist based on a comparison of the artist'"'"'s set of scores to other artists'"'"' set of scores.

66. The computer implemented method of claim 38, further comprising:

generating a list of a plurality of artists in ranked order based on a comparison of the artists'"'"' set of scores to one another.

67. The computer implemented method of claim 38, further comprising:

transferring information over a computer network, wherein the information transferred includes;

some or all of the data obtained, or a set of scores, or a combination thereof.

68. The computer implemented method of claim 66, further comprising:

transferring information over a computer network, wherein the information transferred includes;

some or all of data obtained, or a set of scores, or a list of a plurality of artists in ranked order, or a combination thereof.
