Abstract

An analyte test instrument that has a test strip circuitry that can be configured using information provided by a calibration strip to perform assays with test strips having two electrodes and test strips having three electrodes. The analyte test instrument of this invention comprises:

• • (a) a test port for receiving a test strip;
  • (b) a microprocessor for executing instructions downloaded into the analyte test instrument;
  • (c) a test strip circuit capable of having a plurality of configurations, the configurations being set by the microprocessor, whereby an assay can be performed using the test strip.

47. An analyte test instrument suitable for performing an assay, said analyte test instrument comprising:

a microprocessor configured to receive information downloaded to the analyte test instrument;

a circuit capable of having a plurality of configurations, the configurations being set by the microprocessor based on the downloaded information,

a display in communication with the microprocessor,

wherein an assay can be performed using the analyte test instrument, and wherein the display is configured to display results of the assay to a user of the analyte test instrument.

48. The test instrument of claim 47, wherein the analyte test instrument comprises a test port for receiving a test strip and the circuit is a test strip circuit.

49. The test instrument of claim 48, wherein the configurations are based on the electrode structure of the test strip.

50. The test instrument of claim 48, wherein the test port is configured to receive a calibration strip, and wherein the information downloaded to the analyte test instrument is downloaded from the calibration strip.

51. The analyte test instrument of claim 47, wherein the analyte test instrument is configured to determine concentration of an analyte in a sample.

52. The analyte test instrument of claim 51, wherein the analyte is glucose.

53. The analyte test instrument of claim 47, wherein the information comprises one or more algorithms.

54. The analyte test instrument of claim 47, wherein the information comprises data and/or software programs.

55. The analyte test instrument of claim 54, wherein the data and/or software programs provide instructions to the microprocessor.

56. The analyte test instrument of claim 47, wherein the analyte test instrument is configured to determine analyte concentration in a sample and display the analyte concentration on the display.

57. The analyte test instrument of claim 47, wherein the display is configured to display one or more messages to a user of the analyte test instrument.

58. The analyte test instrument of claim 57, wherein the one or more messages comprises a warning message.

59. The analyte test instrument of claim 47, further comprising memory configured to store the information.

60. The analyte test instrument of claim 59, further comprising memory configured to store results of one or more assays performed using the analyte test instrument, and wherein the analyte test instrument comprises software which enables a user of the analyte test instrument to recall and display the results of the one or more assays.

61. The analyte test instrument of claim 47, wherein the analyte test instrument comprises software configured to generate menus accessible by a user of the analyte test instrument.

62. The analyte test instrument of claim 47, wherein the analyte test instrument comprises one or more replaceable batteries which provide power to the analyte test instrument.

63. The analyte test instrument of claim 47, wherein the analyte test instrument comprises software configured to control transmission of data to one or more external devices.

64. The analyte test instrument of claim 47, wherein the analyte test instrument is configured to allow a user of the analyte test instrument to set one or more configuration control parameters for the analyte test instrument.

65. A glucose test instrument suitable for performing an assay, said glucose test instrument comprising:

a test port for receiving a test strip,

a microprocessor configured to receive information downloaded to the glucose test instrument;

a test strip circuit capable of having a plurality of configurations, the configurations being set by the microprocessor based on the downloaded information; and

a display in communication with the microprocessor, wherein the glucose test instrument is configured to determine concentration of glucose in a sample, and wherein the display is configured to display the determined glucose concentration to a user of the analyte test instrument.

66. The glucose test instrument of claim 65, wherein the test port is configured to receive a calibration strip, and wherein the information downloaded to the glucose test instrument is downloaded from the calibration strip.

67. The glucose test instrument of claim 65, wherein the configurations are based on the electrode structure of the test strip.

68. The glucose test instrument of claim 65, wherein the information comprises one or more algorithms.

69. The glucose test instrument of claim 65, wherein the information comprises data and/or software programs.

70. The glucose test instrument of claim 69, wherein the data and/or software programs provide instructions to the microprocessor.

71. The glucose test instrument of claim 65, wherein the glucose test instrument is configured to determine glucose concentration in a sample and display the glucose concentration on the display.

72. The glucose test instrument of claim 65, wherein the display is configured to display one or more messages to a user of the glucose test instrument.

73. The glucose test instrument of claim 72, wherein the one or more messages comprises a warning message.

74. The glucose test instrument of claim 65, further comprising memory configured to store the information.

The glucose test instrument of claim 74, further comprising memory configured to store results of one or more assays performed using the glucose test instrument, and wherein the glucose test instrument comprises software which enables a user of the glucose test instrument to recall and display the results of the one or more assays.

76. The glucose test instrument of claim 65, wherein the glucose test instrument comprises software configured to generate menus accessible by a user of the analyte test instrument.
