Abstract

An apparatus and method for ejecting fluid from a fluid delivery system. The fluid delivery system has a pneumatic assembly that when triggered injects gas into a hydraulic assembly, which in turn ejects fluid through an external interface. An electronic interface displays various measurements, for example, how much fluid has been ejected and if the hydraulic system is closed the pressure of the system. The pneumatic assembly can also be depressurized such that fluid can reenter the hydraulic assembly through the external interface.

213. A fluid delivery system for a medical device, comprising:

an actuator connected to a valve for releasing a pressurized fluid;

an assembly defining a fluid chamber for containing an inflation fluid and having a volume that changes in response to the release of the pressurized fluid;

an external interface in fluid communication with the fluid chamber;

a sensor operably connected to the assembly to take measurements from the fluid chamber; and

an electronic interface connected to the sensor to determine information relating to the measurements taken by the sensor.

214. The fluid delivery system of claim 213, wherein the fluid delivery system is hand-held.

215. The fluid delivery system of claim 213, further comprising an electronic display on the electronic interface that displays the information relating to measurements taken by the sensor.

216. The fluid delivery system of claim 213, further comprising an indicator on the electronic interface that indicates when the information relating to the measurement taken by the sensor reaches a predetermined value.

217. The fluid delivery system of claim 216, wherein the indicator is at least one of a visual indication or an audible indication.

218. The fluid delivery system of claim 213, further comprising an indicator in the electronic interface that indicates when the information relating to the measurement taken by the sensor is increasing or decreasing.

219. The fluid delivery system of claim 213, wherein the measurement taken by the sensor is pressure of the inflation fluid.

220. The fluid delivery system of claim 219, further comprising an electronic display on the electronic interface that displays the fluid pressure.

221. A fluid delivery system for a medical device, comprising:

a pneumatic assembly containing a pressurized fluid;

an actuator connected to a valve for releasing the pressurized fluid from the pneumatic assembly;

a hydraulic assembly including a hydraulic cylinder, defining a fluid chamber for containing an inflation fluid, and configured to input and output the inflation fluid through an external interface in response to pressure from the pressurized fluid;

a sensor operably connected to the hydraulic assembly to take measurements from the fluid chamber; and

an electronic interface connected to the sensor to determine information relating to the measurements taken by the sensor.

222. The fluid delivery system of claim 221, wherein the hydraulic assembly includes a barrier separating the fluid chamber from the released pressurized fluid.

223. The fluid delivery system of claim 222, wherein the barrier is a piston configured to move within the hydraulic cylinder while simultaneously maintaining a seal between the fluid chamber and the released pressurized fluid

224. The fluid delivery system of claim 221, wherein the hydraulic assembly includes a hydraulic cap comprising:

a check valve in fluid communication with the fluid chamber; and

a piston and spring assembly;

wherein when the volume of the fluid chamber decreases, the piston compresses the spring and stores energy,

wherein when the pressure in a second chamber decreases, the spring expands and releases the energy, and

wherein the sensor and the external interface are mounted on the hydraulic cap, and the hydraulic cap maintains a seal with the hydraulic cylinder.

225. A fluid delivery system for a medical device, comprising:

a reservoir containing a pressurized fluid;

an actuator connected to a valve for releasing a pressurized fluid from the reservoir;

an assembly defining a fluid chamber for containing an inflation fluid, the assembly configured to receive and release the pressurized fluid, the fluid chamber having a volume that decreases in response to the receipt of the pressurized fluid in the assembly and increases in response to the release of the pressurized fluid from the assembly;

a sensor operably connected to the assembly to take measurements from the fluid chamber; and

an electronic interface connected to the sensor to determine information relating to the measurements taken by the sensor and capable of sending a signal to the assembly to alter a flow of the inflation fluid.

226. The fluid delivery system of claim 225, wherein the electronic interface is capable of sending the signal to the assembly to alter the inflation fluid flow at one or more predetermined measurements.

227. The fluid delivery system of claim 225, wherein the actuator is electronically connected to the valve.

228. The fluid delivery system of claim 225, further comprising a high pressure valve configured to automatically release the pressurized fluid into an external environment once the sensor takes a predetermined measurement from the fluid chamber.

229. The fluid delivery system of claim 225, wherein the valve comprises a relief cap configured to allow the user to release the pressurized fluid into an external environment.

230. The fluid delivery system of claim 225, further comprising an energy storage system that stores energy when the volume of the fluid chamber decreases and releases the stored energy when the pressure in a second chamber of pressurized fluid decreases.

231. The fluid delivery system of claim 230, wherein the energy storage system includes a piston and spring assembly,

wherein when the volume of the fluid chamber decreases, the piston compresses the spring and stores energy, and

wherein when the pressure in the second chamber decreases, the spring expands and releases the energy.

232. The fluid delivery system of claim 225, further comprising a check valve, at least a portion of the check valve being in fluid communication with the fluid chamber.
