Abstract

A method and an apparatus for communicating healthcare information utilize a set of codes to communicate healthcare data in a convenient manner. A set of codes each corresponding to respective healthcare data is generated. The set of codes is stored in a memory associated with a portable terminal. Selection of at least one code corresponding to healthcare data relevant to a patient is detected, where after the selected at least one code is wirelessly transmitted to a recipient.

Claims

1. An apparatus configured to communicate healthcare information, the apparatus comprising:

a portable terminal configured to wirelessly transmit a selected subset of a set of codes to a server system via a first network capable of providing communication between the portable terminal and the server system,

wherein the first network is a wireless network,

and wherein wireless transmission of the selected subset of the set of codes causes a medical diagnosis corresponding to the selected subset of the set of codes to be provided to a patient via a second network.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising

a memory configured to store the set of codes;

and

a selector configured to receive information for selecting the subset of the set of codes.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the portable terminal is a cellular telephone and the memory is an on-board memory of the cellular telephone.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the cellular telephone is a wireless application protocol (WAP)-enabled cellular telephone configured to transmit the selected subset of the set of codes via the first network utilizing the wireless application protocol (WAP).

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the set of codes includes at least one of an International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9CM) diagnosis code, an International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10CM) diagnosis code or a Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System/Current Procedural Terminology (HCPCS/CPT) code.

6. A computer-implemented method comprising:

employing a processor to execute computer-executable instructions that, when executed, cause the processor to perform;

transmitting a selected subset of a set of codes to a server system via a first network, wherein the first network is a wireless network; and

transmitting a medical diagnosis corresponding to the selected subset of the set of codes to a patient via a second network, wherein the transmitting the medical diagnosis to the patient via the second network is in response to the transmitting the selected subset of the set of codes to the server system via the first network.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 6, further comprising:

storing the set of codes; and

receiving information for selecting the subset of the set of codes.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 6, wherein the transmitting the selected subset of the set of codes is performed using wireless mark-up language (WML).

The computer-implemented method of claim 6, wherein the set of codes includes at least one of an International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9CM) diagnosis code, an International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10CM) diagnosis code or a Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System/Current Procedural Terminology (HCPCS/CPT) code.

10. A system configured to communicate healthcare information, the system comprising:

a first server; and

a gateway configured to wirelessly communicate with the first server and at least one portable terminal via a first network to;

receive selected one or more codes from the at least one portable terminal; and

transmit information indicative of a medical diagnosis corresponding to the selected one or more codes to the first server,

wherein the first network is a wireless network,

and wherein the first server is configured to receive the information indicative of the medical diagnosis from the gateway and to communicate the information indicative of the medical diagnosis to an end user to which the medical diagnosis pertains via a second network.

11. The system of claim 10, further comprising the at least one portable terminal.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the at least one portable terminal is a cellular telephone and the memory is an on-board memory of the cellular telephone.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the cellular telephone is a wireless application protocol (WAP)-enabled cellular telephone configured to transmit the selected subset of the set of codes via the first network utilizing the wireless application protocol (WAP).

14. The system of claim 10, wherein the first network is at least one of a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network, a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network, a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) network or a Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) network.

15. The system of claim 10, wherein the second network comprises the Internet/World Wide Web.

16. The system of claim 10, further comprising a second server.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the second server has an associated database storing healthcare information associated with the one or more codes.

18. The system of claim 10, wherein the selected one or more codes includes at least one of an International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9CM) diagnosis code, an International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10CM) diagnosis code or a Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System/Current Procedural Terminology (HCPCS/CPT) code.

19. The system of claim 10, wherein the medical diagnosis is communicated via a medical diagnosis report provided using wireless mark-up language (WML).

20. The system of claim 11, wherein the at least one portable terminal comprises a selector configured to receive information for selecting the one or more codes.
