Abstract

Disclosed is a high resolution display on which decompressed high resolution image data is displayed, the display including pixels, the pixels being on a substrate, where circuitry is present on the same substrate as the pixels, where compressed high resolution image data which has been compressed using known data compression techniques is received by the circuitry, the circuitry being operable to perform decompression calculations which provide subsequent display of decompressed high resolution image data by the pixels of the display.

Claims

1. A high resolution display on which decompressed high resolution image data is displayed, the display including pixels, the pixels being on a substrate, where circuitry is present on the same substrate as the pixels, where compressed high resolution image data which has been compressed using known data compression techniques is received by the circuitry, the circuitry being operable to perform decompression calculations which provide subsequent display of decompressed high resolution image data by the pixels of the display.

3. The high resolution display of claim 1, in which decryption calculations are executed in a distributed sense using circuitry which is distributed across the substrate of the pixels of the display.

The high resolution display of claim 1, in which the circuitry operable to perform decompression calculations is located between the pixels of the display or in which the circuitry operable to perform decompression calculations is located outside the space encompassing the pixels of the display, but on the same substrate as the pixels of the display.

7. The high resolution display of claim 1, in which compressed data is transmitted to display clusters which are part of the whole display, each cluster then performing a function of decompressing the data which has been received and then displaying decompressed data at pixels of each cluster.

8. The high resolution display of claim 1, on which normal display data is displayed or on which holographic display data is displayed.

The high resolution display of claim 1, in which the space in which the compression calculations are performed is on the same substrate as the pixels of the display or in which the space in which the compression calculations are performed is not on the same substrate as the pixels of the display.

12. The high resolution display of claim 7, in which the clusters for the decompression calculation receive data via row and column wires of the display.

13. The high resolution display of claim 7, in which each cluster for the decompression calculation receives data via a parallel data bus or via a serial data connection.

16. The high resolution display of claim 7, in which decompression is performed by each cluster in 40 ms or less.

17. The high resolution display of claim 8, in which holographic image calculation is performed after decompression or in which holographic image calculation is performed after decompression and in which calculations performed to determine an encoding of a spatial light modulator are performed using circuitry which is on the same substrate as the pixels of the spatial light modulator.

19. The high resolution display of claim 17 in which the calculations performed to determine the encoding of the spatial light modulator do not involve the calculation of a Fourier transform or of a Fresnel transform.

The high resolution display of claim 17, in which calculations performed to determine the encoding of the spatial light modulator are performed using circuitry which is between the pixels of the spatial light modulator or in which the calculations performed to determine the encoding of the spatial light modulator are performed in discrete areas of the display, to encode the pixels of the corresponding discrete areas, on a discrete area by discrete area basis.

22. The high resolution display of claim 1, in which the circuitry includes thin film transistors or in which active regions of at least some of the circuitry consists of at least one element of the following:

polycrystalline Si, continuous grain Si, polycrystalline SiGe, monocrystalline Si, single grain Si and organic semiconductors.

29. The high resolution display of claim 1, in which the substrate is monocrystalline Si or in which the substrate is glass.

30. The high resolution display of claim 29, in which the display is fabricated using liquid crystal on silicon technology or in which the display is fabricated using MEMS technology or in which the display is fabricated using field emission display technology.

33. The high resolution display of claim 8, in which only real space image data is transmitted to the display or in which only real space image data is transmitted to the display and in which the real space image data consists of intensity and depth map data.

36. The high resolution display of claim 17, in which the holographic calculation is performed using a look-up table approach or in which sub-holograms are used for the holographic calculation.

40. A method of displaying decompressed high resolution image data, using the high resolution display of any previous claim, comprising the steps of:

(a) compressing high resolution image data

(b) transmitting compressed high resolution image data

(c) receiving the compressed high resolution image data

(d) decompressing the compressed high resolution image data

(e) displaying the decompressed high resolution image data on the display.
