Abstract

A timing device for indicating a passage of a duration of time is disclosed. The timing device in accordance with the embodiments of the invention has a grid array architecture. The grid array architecture includes an electrode structure with an anode layer, a cathode layer and a thermistor layer. The anode layer and the thermistor layer are electrically coupled through a plurality of cathode trace structures. In operation the timing device is actuated through a suitable mechanism to initiate depletion of the anode layer and, thereby, indicate a passage of a duration time. As the anode layer depletes, sequential cathode trace structures are exposed and the thermistor layer acts as a temperature dependent resistor through a plurality of exposed cathode trace structures.

Claims

1. A timing device comprising:

a. an anode layer;

b. a cathode layer;

c. a base layer;

d. an electrolyte attached to the base layer; and

e. an activator to activate the timing device;

wherein the anode layer and the cathode layer are positioned adjacent to one another along an axis of the timing device.

2. The timing device of claim 1, wherein after activation, the anode layer depletes in a direction away from and perpendicular to the cathode layer.

3. The timing device of claim 1, wherein the cathode layer is formed from copper.

4. The timing device of claim 1, wherein the anode layer is formed from aluminum.

5. The timing device of claim 1, wherein the electrolyte is a salt.

6. The timing device of claim 1, wherein the electrolyte has a relatively high resistivity value.

7. The timing device of claim 1, wherein the electrolyte has a relatively low resistivity value.

8. The timing device of claim 1, where in the electrolyte has one or more resistivity values.

9. The timing device of claim 1, further comprising a temperature compensating element.

10. The timing device of claim 1, wherein as the anode layer depletes one or more anode depletion patterns that are printed onto the base are uncovered.

11. A timing device comprising:

a. an anode layer;

b. a base layer;

d. an electrolyte attached to the base area;

e. an activator to activate device; and

f. a cathode array architecture, wherein a plurality of cathode trace structures are reintroduced throughout the timing device and further, wherein the plurality of cathode trace structures are positioned adjacent to the anode layer along an axis of the timing device.

12. The timing device of claim 11, wherein the cathode trace structures are reintroduced throughout the timing device at evenly spaced intervals.

13. The timing device of claim 11, wherein the cathode trace structures are reintroduced throughout the timing device at unevenly spaced intervals.

14. The timing device of claim 11, wherein the cathode trace structures are reintroduced throughout the timing device at increasingly smaller intervals.

15. The timing device of claim 11, wherein the cathode trace structures divide the anode layer into a plurality of cells, wherein an overall depletion time of the anode layer of the timing device is equal to a sum of a plurality of cell depletion times of the plurality of cells.

16. The timing device of claim 15, wherein each of the plurality of cells have a cell depletion rate that decreases as the cell is depleted.

17. The timing device of claim 11, wherein after actuation, the anode layer depletes in a direction away from and perpendicular to the plurality of cathode trace structures.

18. The timing device of claim 11, wherein the cathode trace structures are formed from copper.

19. The timing device of claim 11, wherein the anode layer is formed from aluminum.

20. The timing device of claim 11, wherein the electrolyte is a salt.

21. The timing device of claim 11, further comprising a temperature compensating element.

22. The timing device of claim 11, wherein as the anode layer depletes one or more anode depletion patterns that are printed onto the base are uncovered.

23. A method of manufacturing an activation means of a timing device, the method comprising:

a. making an electrode structure, wherein the electrode structure comprises;

i. an anode layer;

ii. a base layer;

iii. a quantity of electrolyte; and

iv. a cathode array architecture, wherein a plurality of cathode trace structures are reintroduced throughout the timing device and further wherein, the quantity of electrolyte is only partially deposited so that the quantity of electrolyte does not contact the plurality of cathode trace structures; and

b. molding a protective reservoir to the cathode layer, wherein the timing device is activated when the reservoir is breached and a quantity of electrolyte contacts the main body of electrolyte thereby completing the circuit and activating the timing device.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the cathode trace structures divide the anode layer into a plurality of cells, wherein an overall depletion time of the anode layer of the timing device is equal to a sum of a plurality of cell depletion times of the plurality of cells.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein each of the plurality of cells have a cell depletion rate that decreases as the cell is depleted.

26. The method of claim 25, further comprising reintroducing the cathode trace structures at smaller intervals at the end of the timing device such that the overall depletion time of the anode layer of the timing device is decreased.
