Abstract

In some example embodiments, a computerized method includes determining at least one of a read frequency, a write frequency and a data volume for data persistently stored. The data has a first format. The method also includes selecting a first type of data migration or a second type of data migration, wherein the selecting is derived from at least one of the read frequency, the write frequency and the data volume for the data persistently stored. The method includes transforming the data to a second format using the selected data migration. The method includes outputting the data for storage in machine-readable medium.

Claims

1. A computerized method comprising:

determining at least one of a read frequency, a write frequency and a data volume for data persistently stored, the data having a first format;

selecting a first type of data migration or a second type of data migration, wherein the selecting is derived from at least one of the read frequency, the write frequency and the data volume for the data persistently stored;

transforming the data to a second format using the selected data migration; and

outputting the data for storage in a machine-readable medium.

2. The computerized method of claim 1, wherein the selecting of the first type of data migration comprises selecting an incremental conversion.

3. The computerized method of claim 1, wherein the selecting of the second type of data migration comprises selecting a lazy migration.

4. The computerized method of claim 1, further comprising upgrading an application from a current version to a new version, wherein the application is to access the data during execution, wherein the transforming of the data to the second format using the selected data migration occurs essentially during an uptime of the application.

5. The computerized method of claim 4, wherein the selecting of the first type of data migration comprises selecting an incremental conversion and wherein transforming the data to the second format comprises transforming the data prior to down time of the application as part of the upgrade of the application from the current version to the new version.

The computerized method of claim 4, wherein the selecting of the second type of data migration comprises selecting a lazy migration and wherein transforming the data to the second format comprises transforming the data after down time of the application as part of the upgrade of the application from the current version to the new version.

7. A machine-readable medium that provides instructions which, when executed by a machine, cause said machine to perform operations including:

determining a read frequency and a write frequency for data persistently stored, the data having a first format;

transforming the data to a second format using a first type of data migration, in response to a determination that the write frequency is below a write threshold and the read frequency is above a read threshold;

transforming the data to the second format using a second type of data migration, in response to a determination that the read frequency is below the read threshold and that the write frequency is above the write threshold; and

outputting the data for storage in a machine-readable medium.

8. The machine-readable medium of claim 7, further comprising upgrading an application from a current version to a new version, wherein the application accesses the data during execution, wherein the transforming of the data to the second format using the first type of data migration occurs essentially during an uptime of the application.

9. The machine-readable medium of claim 7, wherein the transforming of the data to the second format using the second type of data migration occurs essentially during an uptime of the application.

10. The machine-readable medium of claim 7, wherein determining the read frequency and the write frequency comprises determining the read frequency and the write frequency from accesses of the data by the current version of the application.

11. The machine-readable medium of claim 7, wherein the first type of data migration comprises an incremental conversion.

12. The machine-readable medium of claim 7, wherein the second type of data migration comprises a lazy migration.

13. An apparatus comprising:

a machine-readable medium to store a current version of data having a first format; and

a processor to upgrade an application from a current version to a new version, the processor to determine a read frequency and a write frequency for the current version of the data, the processor to transform the current version of the data to a new version of the data having a second format, wherein the processor is to transform using a first type of data migration in response to a determination that the write frequency is below a write threshold and the read frequency is above a read threshold, wherein the processor is to transform using a second type of data migration in response to a determination that the read frequency is below the read threshold and that the write frequency is above the write threshold, the first type of data migration is to occur essentially prior to down time of the application as part of the upgrade and the second type of data migration is to occur essentially after down time of the application.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the first type of data migration comprises an incremental conversion.

15. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the second type of data migration comprises a lazy migration.

16. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the read frequency and the write frequency are determined from a number of read accesses and a number of write accesses of the data by the current version of the application, respectively.

17. A computerized system comprising:

a machine-readable medium to store persistent data having a first format;

an application module, executable by a processor, to execute an application that is to access the persistent data, wherein the application module is to upgrade the application from a current version to a new version for execution;

a transformation selection module to determine at least one of a read frequency, a write frequency and a data volume of the persistent data, wherein the transformation selection module is to select a selected transformation from a first type of data migration or a second type of data migration, wherein the selection is derived from at least one of the read frequency, the write frequency and the data volume; and

a transformation module to perform a transformation of the persistent data to a new persistent data having a second format, the transformation module to use the selected transformation to perform the transformation of the persistent data, wherein the transformation is part of an upgrade of the application from a current version to a new version.

18. The computerized system of claim 17, wherein the first type of data migration comprises an incremental conversion, wherein the transformation is to occur prior to downtime of the application as part of the upgrade.

19. The computerized system of claim 18, wherein the transformation is to occur essentially during an uptime of the application.

20. The computerized system of claim 17, wherein the second type of data migration comprises a lazy migration, wherein the transformation is to occur after downtime of the application as part of the upgrade.

21. The computerized system of claim 20, wherein the transformation is to occur essentially during an uptime of the application.
