Abstract

A system and method for overlay advertising and purchasing utilizing on-line and streaming media. In at least one embodiment, a viewer user receiving on-line video or streaming media is able to pause content and be directed, on the same media player, to a product panel to select product(s) to be purchased, customized, or to receive additional static or dynamic information. The method and system also provides for network connectivity to other web-based and physical services and tracking systems to determine traffic to and from the on-line video or streaming media content.

Claims

1. A method providing advertising to a network node, comprising:

transmitting media presentation data via a network to the node, wherein there is supplemental information having a predetermined association with the media presentation data;

transmitting the supplemental information, via the network, to the node;

wherein when a presentation of the media presentation data is paused by a user of the node, the supplemental information is presented at the node, wherein the supplemental information is related to the contents of the presentation;

wherein information indicative of the pause occurring is transmitted via the network to a predetermined network node; and

wherein upon receiving user input at the node for continuation of the presentation, the continuation proceeds at a portion of the presentation that is relative to a portion of the presentation where the pause occurred.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein transmitting the media presentation data occurs as a consequence of a request by the user for the media presentation data.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the transmitting of the supplemental information occurs as a consequence of the request.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the information indicative of the pause includes at least one of:

first identification data for identifying the node or the user, second identification data for identifying the media presentation data, third identification data for identifying one or more advertising presentations presented at the node in response to the pause.

5. The method of claim 1, further including receiving at a predetermined network node, via a transmission on the network, data indicative of the presentation of the media presentation data occurring at the node.

6. The method of claim 5 further including determining an additional media presentation data to notify the user thereof, wherein the additional media presentation data is determined using a data related to a contents of the media presentation data.

7. The method of claim 6 further including notifying the user of the additional media presentation data.

8. The method of claim 1 further including the steps of:

providing an advertiser with access to a management system for inputting data for identifying the media presentation data, inputting data for identifying one or more advertisements of the supplemental information, and creating the predetermined association; and

receiving, once the predetermined association is created, a transmission on the network from the advertiser, wherein the transmission identifies at least one of;

the media presentation data, the supplemental information, and the predetermined association.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein during the presentation by a media player at the node, the media player:

(a) pauses the presentation of the media presentation data upon detection of the pause, (b) presents to the user one or more advertising presentations obtained using the supplemental information, wherein the advertising presentations are configured to receive advertising related input from the user, (c) receives a user selection of one of the advertising presentations, and (d) changes a presentation or user interaction characteristic of the one advertising presentation selected.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the changing of the presentation or user interaction characteristic includes increasing a presentation size of the one advertising presentation.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the changing of the presentation or user interaction characteristic includes configuring the one advertising presentation to accept user input for requesting additional advertising information.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein the changing of the presentation or user interaction characteristic includes overlaying the presentation of the one advertising presentation onto the paused presentation.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein upon continuation of the presentation, a change to a presentation for the supplemental information occurs, wherein the change includes one of:

reducing a size of the presentation for the supplemental information, configuring the presentation for the supplemental information to cease to accept user input for requesting additional advertising information, and terminating the presentation for the supplemental information.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the continuation of the presentation continues from one of:

where the pause occurred, and from a portion of the presentation presented to the user earlier than when the pause occurred.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein a user selection of a location on the presentation of the media presentation data is used to select at least one advertising presentation for the supplemental information to present to the user.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein a product or service presented in the presentation of the media presentation data is identified in a presentation for the supplemental information is presented during the pause.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein the supplemental information includes advertising for a product or service that is also identified or presented in the presentation of the media presentation data.

21. The method of claim 1, further including determining the supplemental information according to profile information related to the user;

and

associating the supplemental information with the media presentation prior to transmitting at least one of the media presentation data and the supplemental information to the user.

18. An apparatus for presenting a media presentation data at a network node comprising:

a repository for storing data related to a media presentation data (MS);

wherein the data related to a the media presentation data MS comprises information for accessing the media presentation data MS, and information for accessing supplemental information having a content identifying a product or service that is also presented or identified in a content of the media presentation data MS;

a repository for storing data for providing the node with access to a media presentation data player, wherein the media presentation data player provides a presentation of the media presentation data MS at the node;

wherein during the presentation, when the media presentation data player receives input to pause the presentation of the media presentation data MS at the node, the media presentation data MS is paused, and as a result of the pause, an advertising presentation for the supplemental information is presented at the node, wherein the advertising presentation is configured to accept an additional user input for obtaining additional advertising information related to the product or service;

wherein when the media presentation data player receives further input from the user for continuation of the media presentation data MS, the continuation proceeds at a portion of the presentation that is relative to the pause of the media presentation data MS; and

a management system for receiving input for the data related to the media presentation data MS, wherein following the presentation of the media presentation data MS and the advertising presentation, an input to the management system for changing or replacing one of the media presentation data MS or the supplemental information results in a corresponding change to the data related to the media presentation data MS so that for a further activation of the media player for presenting a subsequent presentation of the media presentation data MS and, upon pause of the subsequent presentation, the advertising presentation, the change or replacement of one of the media presentation data MS or the supplemental information is presented by the media presentation data player.

19. A computer readable medium containing instructions that when executed implement a method for presenting information, comprising:

receiving a request at a multimedia player distribution server of a network through a graphical user interface;

distributing a multimedia player to the graphical user interface via the network;

distributing a media presentation and supplemental information associated therewith to the graphical user interface via the network;

wherein when a user pauses a playing of the media presentation with the multimedia player, the supplemental information is presented to the user;

wherein information indicative of the pause occurring is transmitted via the network to a predetermined network node;

wherein user input to the displayed supplemental information activates a hyperlink for contacting a node of the network for providing the user with additional supplemental information; and

wherein upon receiving user input for continuation of the media presentation, the continuation proceeds at a portion of the media presentation that is relative to a portion of the media presentation where the pause occurred.

20. A method of associating advertising data to media streams comprising:

recording, in a first storage repository, a media stream record, wherein the media stream has at least one of a time, frame, and spatial components;

recording, in a second storage repository, an advertising data record;

associating the advertising data record with the at least one of a time, frame, and spatial components of the media stream record;

wherein when a user pauses a playing of a multimedia presentation corresponding to the media stream record, supplemental information corresponding to the advertising data record is presented to the user;

wherein information indicative of the pause occurring is transmitted via the network to a predetermined network node;

wherein user input to the displayed supplemental information activates a hyperlink for contacting a node of the network for providing the user with additional supplemental information; and

wherein upon receiving user input for continuation of the multimedia presentation, the continuation proceeds at a portion of the multimedia presentation that is relative to a portion of the multimedia presentation where the pause occurred.
