Abstract

A system, method and apparatus for providing telephony and digital media services to a location, such as a home or office, is described herein. In one embodiment, the system includes a telephony and digital media services device that is configured to function as an all-in-one voice, data and media information center. The device provides telephony functionality both directly and through associated handsets. The device pairs a user-friendly touch-screen interface with a high-performance hardware/software architecture capable of delivering advanced media applications and graphics combined with landline quality telephony service all in one integrated system.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

a device configured for connection to a remote telecommunication carrier switch via a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) link, the device being further configured to provide VoIP telephony services to users utilizing the VoIP link and to act as a wireless base station; and

one or more wireless handsets, each of which is configured to communicate with the device over a respective wireless link and to provide VoIP telephony services to users using the respective wireless link.

The system of claim 1, wherein the device is configured to act as a Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) base station and wherein each of the one or more wireless handsets is configured to communicate with the device over a respective DECT link and to provide VoIP telephony services to users using the respective DECT link.

3. A system, comprising:

a first device configured for connection to a remote telecommunication carrier switch that provides shared trunking functionality via a first Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) link, the first device being further configured to provide VoIP telephony services to users utilizing the first VoIP link and to act as a first wireless base station;

one or more first wireless handsets, each of which is configured to communicate with the first device over a respective wireless link and to provide VoIP telephony services to users using the respective wireless link;

a second device configured for connection to the remote telecommunication carrier switch via a second VoIP link, the second device being further configured to provide VoIP telephony services to users utilizing the second VoIP link and to act as a second wireless base station; and

one or more second wireless handsets, each of which is configured to communicate with the second device over a respective wireless link and to provide VoIP telephony services to users using the respective wireless link;

wherein the first device and the second device are associated with a common telephone number for the purposes of receiving incoming calls.

The system of claim 3, wherein the first device is configured to act as a first Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) base station, wherein each of the one or more first wireless handsets is configured to communicate with the first device over a respective DECT link and to provide VoIP telephony services to users using the respective DECT link, wherein the second device is configured to act as a second DECT base station, and wherein each of the one or more second wireless handsets is configured to communicate with the second device over a respective DECT link and to provide VoIP telephony services to users using the respective DECT link.

5. A system, comprising:

an adapter unit comprising

an Analog Terminal Adapter (ATA) configured for connection to a remote telecommunication carrier switch via a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) link, the ATA being configured to allow Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) equipment to interface to the VoIP link, and

a wireless base station configured for connection to the remote telecommunication carrier switch via the VoIP link;

one or more VoIP devices, each of which is configured to communicate with the wireless base station over a respective wireless link and to provide VoIP telephony services to users using the respective wireless link; and

one or more Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) devices communicatively connected to the ATA, each of which is configured to provide POTS-based services to users via the ATA.

The system of claim 5, wherein the wireless base station comprises a Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) base station and wherein each of the one or more VoIP devices is configured to communicate with the wireless base station over a respective DECT link and to provide VoIP telephony services to users using the respective DECT link.

7. The system of claim 5, wherein the adapter unit further comprises:

a network interface configured to provide access to an Internet Protocol (IP) link to the remote telecommunication carrier switch, wherein at least one of the VoIP devices is further configured to communicate with the network interface to provide at least one digital media service to users using the IP link.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the network interface comprises one of a IEEE 802.11 access point or an Ethernet switch.

9. A system, comprising:

an adapter unit, comprising

a wireless base station configured for connection to a remote telecommunication carrier switch via a Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) link, and

a network interface configured to provide access to a wide area network via an Internet Protocol (IP) link;

one or more devices, each of which is configured to communicate with the wireless base station over a respective wireless link and to provide POTS-based telephony services to users using the respective wireless link and each of which is configured to communicate with the network interface to provide at least one digital media service to users using the IP link.

The system of claim 9, wherein the wireless base station comprises a Digital Enchanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) base station and wherein each of the one or more devices is configured to communicate with the wireless base station over a respective DECT link and to provide POTS-based telephony services to users using the respective DECT link.

11. The system of claim 9, further comprising one or more POTS devices communicatively connected to the POTS link, each of which is configured to provide POTS-based services to users via the POTS link.

12. The system of claim 9, wherein the network interface comprises one of a IEEE 802.11 access point or an Ethernet switch.

13. A system, comprising:

an adapter unit, comprising

an Analog Terminal Adapter (ATA) configured for connection to a remote telecommunication carrier switch via a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) link, the ATA being configured to allow Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) equipment to interface to the VoIP link,

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) proxy logic configured for connection to the remote telecommunication carrier switch via the VoIP link, the SIP proxy logic being configured to register with the remote telecommunication carrier switch and to maintain a local telephone numbering plan;

a network interface configured to provide access to an Internet Protocol (IP) link to the remote telecommunication carrier switch and connected to the SIP proxy logic;

one or more VoIP devices, each of which is configured for connection to the SIP proxy logic via the network interface and to provide VoIP telephony services to users, wherein providing VoIP telephony services to users includes registering with the SIP proxy logic and communicating with the remote telecommunication carrier switch via the VoIP link.

14. The system of claim 13, further comprising:

one or more POTS devices communicatively connected to the ATA, each of which is configured to provide POTS-based services to users via the ATA.

15. The system of claim 13, wherein the network interface comprises one of a IEEE 802.11 access point or an Ethernet switch.

16. The system of claim 13, wherein each of the VoIP devices is configured to communicate with the network interface via one of an IEEE 802.11 wireless link or a wired Ethernet link.

17. The system of claim 13, wherein each of the VoIP devices is further configured to communicate with the network interface to provide at least one digital media service to users using the IP link.

18. The system of claim 13, further comprising:

a computer communicatively connected to the adapter unit, the computer configured to provide a user with programmatic control over telephony functions performed by the adapter unit.

19. A system, comprising:

an adapter unit, comprising

a Foreign Exchange Office (FXO) gateway configured for connection to a remote telecommunications carrier via a Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) link, the FXO gateway configured to act as a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) server and to maintain a local telephone numbering plan, and

a network interface configured to provide access to a wide area network via an Internet Protocol (IP) link and connected to the FXO gateway;

one or more VoIP devices, each of which is configured for connection to the SIP proxy logic via the network interface and to provide VoIP telephony services to users, wherein providing VoIP telephony services to users includes registering with the FXO gateway and communicating with the remote telecommunication carrier switch via the POTS link.

20. The system of claim 19, further comprising one or more POTS devices communicatively connected to the POTS link, each of which is configured to provide POTS-based services to users via the POTS link.

21. The system of claim 19, wherein the network interface comprises one of a IEEE 802.11 access point or an Ethernet switch.

22. The system of claim 19, wherein each of the VoIP devices is configured to communicate with the network interface via one of an IEEE 802.11 wireless link or a wired Ethernet link.

23. The system of claim 19, wherein each of the VoIP devices is further configured to communicate with the network interface to provide at least one digital media service to users using the IP link.

24. The system of claim 19, further comprising:

a computer communicatively connected to the adapter unit, the computer configured to provide a user with programmatic control over telephony functions performed by the adapter unit.
