1. A system to track and determine a location of an instrument relative to a subject, comprising:
- an alignment system operable to be connected to the subject having a trajectory portion operable to be moved relative to the subject and a fixing portion operable to fix the trajectory portion relative to the subject;
a drive system to drive the instrument into the subject, wherein the drive system has a drive base to be connected to the trajectory portion;
a subject tracking device connected to the subject;
a drive system tracking device connected to at least one of the alignment system and the drive system; and
a tracking system to track the alignment tracking device and the drive system tracking system

A system can be used to navigate or guide an instrument or device into an anatomy of a patient. The navigation can occur with the use of image data acquired of the patient. The image data can be registered to the patient space for navigation. One or more tracking devices can be the associated with the patient and with guiding instruments for tracking guiding devices relative to the patient.

11. A method of performing a procedure on a subject, comprising:

mounting an alignment system relative to the subject at a selected position; guiding the alignment system while moving an instrument into the subject; tracking the alignment system relative to the subject as the instrument is moved relative to the subject; determining whether the alignment system has moved from the selected position based on tracking the alignment system after a selected procedure period; and providing an output regarding the determination of whether the alignment system has moved. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)

20. A method of performing a procedure on a subject, comprising:

selecting a procedure to be performed on the subject; selecting an alignment device selected position to mount an alignment device to the subject; mounting the alignment device to the subject at the selected position; connecting an alignment device tracking device to the alignment device; tracking the alignment tracking device; guiding an instrument with the alignment device; connecting a drive system at a drive system selected position to the alignment device; connecting a drive system tracking device to the drive system; moving the instrument into the subject with the drive system while guiding the instrument with the alignment device; determining whether either of the alignment device or the drive system have moved from either of the alignment device selected position and drive system selected position; and providing a signal regarding the determination of whether the either of the alignment device or the drive system has moved from the selected position. - View Dependent Claims (21, 22, 23, 24, 25)
