SECONDARY CONNECTION STRATEGY FOR VEHICLE ORIGINATED CELLULAR COMMUNICATION TO A CALL CENTER
First Claim
1. A connection method for use by a vehicle telematics unit to establish a wireless telephone connection between the telematics unit and a call center, comprising the steps of:
- (a) maintaining at the vehicle a list of wireless carrier systems to which the vehicle telematics unit has previously connected;
(b) accessing the list in response to failure of a first connection attempt; and
(c) iteratively carrying out the following steps until the connection has successfully been established or a failed connection attempt has been carried out for all carrier systems on the list;
(c1) reselecting the next carrier system on the list;
(c2) selecting a base station within the reselected carrier system;
(c3) attempting to attach to the selected base station and, if unsuccessful, attempting to attach to each of a number of neighboring base stations identified by the selected base station and, if successfully attached one of the base stations, then(c4) attempting to originate a connection with the call center using the attached base station.

Abstract
A system and method for making vehicle originated calls to a telematics service provider or other call center. The method includes identifying a call type associated with a desired wireless communication of speech or data to the call center, and then carrying out one of a number of different call connection processes depending on the call type. For voice channel cellular connections, an in-band modem cellular connection is preferably established in most instances using a connection retry strategy that includes primary, secondary, and possibly tertiary connection attempts. The system and method can be carried out in connection with various cellular system technologies, but is especially suited for use with GSM systems.

11. A connection method for use by a vehicle telematics unit to establish a wireless telephone connection between the telematics unit and a call center over a GSM cellular system, comprising the steps of:
-
(a) maintaining at the vehicle a list of PLMN'"'"'s to which the vehicle telematics unit has previously connected; (b) iteratively carrying out the following steps until the connection has successfully been established or a failed connection attempt has been carried out for all PLMNs on the list; (b1) reselecting the next PLMN on the list (b2) selecting a base station within the PLMN; (b3) attempting to attach to the selected base station using an idle mode process and, if unsuccessful, attempting to attach to each of a number of neighboring base stations identified by the selected base station using the idle mode process and, if successfully attached one of the base stations, then (b4) attempting to originate a connection with the call center using the attached base station; and (c) setting up a modem data connection over the originated connection between the telematics unit and call center.

12. A connection method for use by a vehicle telematics unit to establish a wireless telephone connection between the telematics unit and a call center over a GSM cellular system, comprising the steps of:
-
(a) accessing a list of most recently attached PLMNs stored on the vehicle; (b) selecting a PLMN from the list; (c) selecting a base station within the selected PLMN; (d) attempting to attach to the selected base station and, if not successful, attempting to attach to another base station identified on a BCCH Allocation list for the selected base station; (e) attempting origination of an in-band modem cellular call if the telematics unit is attached to a base station; and (f) iteratively repeating steps (b) through (e) for each of the other PLMNs on the list until either a successful origination is made or until origination via a base station has been unsuccessfully attempted on all PLMNs on the list;
