Abstract

A method for updating a location in a wireless communication system is disclosed. The method includes transmitting a request message to enter idle mode, receiving a response message including an Identifier (ID) of a first paging group and an ID of a second paging group in response to the request message, activating a paging group location update timer, when the MS leaves an area of the first paging group, and updating a location according to the paging group location update timer.

Claims

1. A location update method of a Mobile Station (MS) in a wireless communication system, the location update method comprising:

transmitting a request message to enter an idle mode;

receiving a response message comprising an Identifier (ID) of a first paging group and an ID of a second paging group in response to the request message;

activating a paging group location update timer when the MS leaves an area of the first paging group; and

updating a location according to the paging group location update timer.

2. The location update method according to claim 1, wherein updating the location comprises providing mobility information of the MS to a Base Station (BS).

3. The location update method according to claim 2, wherein updating the location further comprises allocation of the MS to a third paging group determined according to the mobility information of the MS.

4. The location update method according to claim 1, wherein updating the location is performed when the paging group location update timer expires.

5. The location update method according to claim 4, wherein updating the location is performed when the paging group location update timer expires and the MS is outside the area of the first paging group.

6. The location update method according to claim 1, wherein updating the location comprises releasing the paging group location update timer when the MS returns to the area of the first paging group before the paging group location update timer expires.

7. The location update method according to claim 1, wherein updating the location comprises updating the location immediately when the MS leaves an area of the second paging group before the paging group location update timer expires.

8. The location update method according to claim 1, wherein the response message further comprises a value of the paging group location update timer.

9. The location update method according to claim 1, wherein updating the location comprises receiving a new value of the paging group location update timer.

10. The location update method according to claim 1, further comprising receiving a paging message from base stations (BSs) of the second paging group at a second paging offset when the paging group location update timer is running, wherein the response message further comprises the first paging offset and the second paging offset.

11. A location update method of a Base Station (BS) in a wireless communication system, the location update method comprising:

receiving a ranging request message for a location update from a Mobile Station (MS), the ranging request message comprising mobility information of the MS; and

transmitting to the MS a ranging response message comprising an Identifier (ID) of a paging group determined according to the mobility information of the MS.

12. The location update method according to claim 11, wherein the ranging response message comprises an ID of a first paging group and an ID of a second paging group, wherein the first paging group is the paging group determined according to the mobility information of the MS.

13. The location update method according to claim 12, wherein the ranging response message comprises include a value of a paging group location update timer, and

wherein the MS activates the paging group location update timer when the MS leaves an area of the first paging group and updates a location when the paging group location update timer expires.

14. A Mobile Station (MS) comprising:

a transmission module for transmitting a request message to enter an idle mode;

a reception module for receiving a response message including an Identifier (ID) of a first paging group and an ID of a second paging group in response to the request message; and

a processor for activating a paging group location update timer when the MS leaves an area of the first paging group and updating a location according to the paging group location update timer.

15. The MS according to claim 14, wherein the MS provides mobility information of the MS to a Base Station (BS) when the MS updates the location.

16. The MS according to claim 15, wherein the MS is allocated by the BS to a third paging group determined according to the mobility information.

17. The MS according to claim 14, wherein the processor updates the location when the paging group location update timer expires.

18. The MS according to claim 17, wherein the processor updates the location when the MS is outside the area of the first paging group and the paging group location update timer expires.

19. The MS according to claim 14, wherein the processor releases the paging group location update timer when the MS returns to the area of the first paging group before the paging group location update timer expires.

20. The MS according to claim 14, wherein the processor updates the location immediately when the MS leaves an area of the second paging group before the paging group location update timer expires.
