Abstract

A respiratory component measurement system that includes an airway adapter adapted to be placed in fluid communication with an airway of a patient and a sensor element in physical communication with the airway adapter. The sensor element is adapted to detect an orientation related characteristic of the airway adapter, a motion related characteristic of the airway adapter, or both. A respiratory component sensor is also adapted to be disposed on the airway adapter so as to measure a characteristic associated with a flow of gas through the airway adapter. An indicating element coupled to the respiratory component sensor is adapted to output a representation of the orientation related characteristic.

Claims

1. A respiratory component measurement system comprising:

an airway adapter adapted to be placed in fluid communication with an airway of a patient;

sensing means for detecting an orientation related characteristic of the airway adapter;

respiratory component sensing means operatively coupled to the airway adapter for measuring a characteristic associated with a flow of gas through the airway adapter; and

an indicating means coupled to the respiratory component sensing means for outputting a representation of the orientation related characteristic.

2. The system according to claim 1, wherein the orientation related characteristic includes an orientation of the airway adapter, a position of the airway adapter, a change of the orientation of the airway adapter, a change of the position of the airway adapter, or any combination thereof.

3. The system according to claim 1, wherein the indicating means includes a display element configured to communicate the representation of the orientation related characteristic.

4. The system according to claim 3, wherein the display element comprises an LED, LCD, OLED or any combination thereof.

5. The system according to claim 3, wherein the respiratory component measurement system further comprises a comparing means for comparing the orientation related characteristic to a first threshold value.

6. The system according to claim 5, wherein the representation of the orientation related characteristic provides an indication if the orientation related characteristic exceeds the first threshold.

7. The system according to claim 1, wherein the respiratory component sensing means is a flow sensor, volume sensor, gas sensor, humidity sensor, temperature sensor, pressure sensor, or any combination thereof operatively coupled to the airway adapter.

8. The system according to claim 1, wherein the respiratory component sensing means is integral with the airway adapter or separable from the airway adapter.

9. The system according to claim 5, wherein the sensing means comprises an accelerometer, inclinometer, electrolytic sensor, liquid tilt sensor, magnetoresistive sensor, gyroscope or any combination thereof.

10. A method of measuring respiratory component comprising:

providing an airway adapter adapted to be placed in fluid communication with an airway of a patient;

detecting an orientation related characteristic of the airway adapter;

indicating a representation of the orientation related characteristic of the airway adapter; and

measuring a characteristic associated with a flow of gas through the airway adapter.

11. The method according to claim 10, wherein the orientation related characteristic includes an orientation of the airway adapter, a position of the airway adapter, a change of the orientation of the airway adapter, a change of the position of the airway adapter, or any combination thereof.

12. The method according to claim 10, wherein indicating the representation of the orientation related characteristic comprises communicating with a display element the representation of the orientation related characteristic.

13. The method according to claim 12, wherein the display element comprises an LED, LCD, OLED or any combination thereof.

14. The method according to claim 12, wherein the method of measuring respiratory component further comprises comparing the orientation related characteristic to a first threshold value.

15. The method according to claim 14, wherein the representation of the orientation related characteristic provides an indication if the orientation related characteristic exceeds the first threshold.

16. The system according to claim 10, wherein the respiratory component sensing means is integral with the airway adapter or separable from the airway adapter.

17. The method according to claim 10, wherein the respiratory component is detected with a flow sensor, volume sensor, gas sensor, humidity sensor, temperature sensor, pressure sensor, or any combination thereof operatively coupled to the airway adapter.
