Abstract

A foot sensor device and method for gait enhancement, the device including: (a) a sensor unit having a casing, the sensor unit for disposing within a shoe of a user, the sensor unit for sensing a parameter associated with a gait event; (b) an electronic communication unit, electrically associated with the sensor unit, for receiving a signal pertaining to the parameter, the electronic unit having: (i) a microcontroller; (ii) a transmitting unit for transmitting, in a wireless fashion, gait information based on the signal, to a unit of an orthosis external to the foot sensor device, and (iii) a housing for housing at least one of the microcontroller and the transmitting unit, and (c) a fastening unit, attached to the housing, adapted to fasten on to the shoe, so as to secure the communication unit in a fixed position during gait.

29. A sensor device, comprising:

a sensor including a casing and a sensor element disposed within the casing, the sensor being configured to detect a parameter associated with a gait event;

an electronic communication unit in electrical communication with the sensor and configured to receive from the sensor information associated with the parameter, the electronic communication unit configured for wireless communication with an external device, the electronic communication unit including a housing that is substantially mechanically independent of the casing of the sensor; and

a fastener having a proximal end portion coupled to a distal end portion of the housing of the electronic communication unit by a hinge, the hinge configured to permit adjustment of the housing with respect to the fastener such that an angle of the housing with respect to the fastener can be selectively increased and decreased.

30. The sensor device of claim 29, wherein the hinge is at least one of rigid or semi-rigid.

31. The sensor device of claim 29, wherein the hinge is formed of an elastomeric material.

32. The sensor device of claim 29, wherein the hinge is configured to retain the housing at a plurality of predetermined angles with respect to the fastener.

33. The sensor device of claim 29, wherein the housing and the fastener each include an inner face configured to face a body, the housing positionable with respect to the fastener such that the inner face of the housing and the inner face of the fastener form an angle within the range of about 150 degrees to about 175 degrees.

34. The sensor device of claim 29, wherein at least a portion of the proximal end portion of the fastener is received in the distal end portion of the housing.

35. The sensor device of claim 29, wherein the electronic communication unit includes a transmitter configured to wirelessly transmit gait information based on the parameter to the external device.

36. The sensor device of claim 29, wherein the electronic communication unit includes a transceiver configured for bidirectional wireless communication with the external device.

37. A sensor device, comprising:

a sensor unit configured to undergo a change in resistance during a gait event, the sensor unit including a casing and a sensor element disposed within the casing, the casing of the sensor unit having a perimeter less than or approximately equal to a perimeter of a heel of a user, the sensor unit being removably positionable beneath an insole of a shoe; and

an electronic communication unit coupled to the sensor unit by a conductive element, the electronic communication unit configured to receive from the sensor unit gait information associated with the change in resistance, the conductive element having sufficient flexibility to permit unconstrained movement of the electronic communication unit toward the sensor unit, the electronic communication unit including a transceiver configured to facilitate wireless transmission of a signal associated with the gait information to an external device and to facilitate receipt of a wireless signal from the external device.

38. The sensor device of claim 37, wherein the sensor unit is repositionable from a first position beneath the insole of the shoe to a second position beneath the insole of the shoe, the second position being different than the first position.

The sensor device of claim 37, wherein the transceiver is configured to receive a wireless signal associated with an algorithm for at least one of controlling or monitoring information associated with the gait event, the electronic communication unit including a microcontroller configured to execute the algorithm.

40. The sensor device of claim 37, further comprising a fastener having a proximal end portion disposed adjacent a distal end portion of the electronic communication unit, the fastener configured to couple the sensor device to the shoe.

41. The sensor device of claim 37, further comprising a fastener configured to couple the electronic communication unit to the shoe, the electronic communication unit being disposed above a rim of the shoe during the gait event.

42. The sensor device of claim 37, wherein the sensor unit is configured to be disposed between the insole and an outsole of the shoe.

43. A sensor device, comprising:

a sensor configured to sense a parameter associated with a gait event, the sensor configured to be disposed within a shoe;

an electronic communication unit electrically associated with and physically distinct from the sensor, the electronic communication unit configured to receive a signal associated with the parameter, the electronic communication unit configured to wirelessly transmit gait information based on the signal to an external device, the electronic communication unit including a housing, at least a portion of the housing being concave and configured to substantially conform to an adjacent body part; and

a fastener including a proximal end at least semi-rigidly attached to a distal end of the housing, the fastener adapted to secure the electronic communication unit to the shoe during the gait event, the housing of the electronic communication unit being disposed above the fastener and being disposed wholly above a portion of a rim of the shoe when the electronic communication unit is secured to the shoe by the fastener during the gait event.

44. The sensor device of claim 43, wherein the sensor configured to be disposed beneath an insole of the shoe.

45. The sensor device of claim 43, wherein the fastener is rigidly fixed with respect to the housing such that an angle formed between a face of the housing and a face of the fastener is substantially constant irrespective of a movement of the shoe during the gait event.

The sensor device of claim 43, wherein the housing and the fastener are coupled to form an angle within a range of about 150 degrees to about 175 degrees between a face of the housing and a face of the clamp, each of the face of the housing and the face of the clamp facing the adjacent body part.

47. The sensor device of claim 43, wherein a portion of the proximal end of the fastener is received in the distal end of the housing of the electronic communication unit.

48. The sensor device of claim 43, wherein the electronic communication unit includes a transceiver configured to transmit the gait information to the external device and configured to receive a signal from the external device.
