Abstract

A method includes: receiving patient specific data; comparing the patient specific data with reference data; producing alerts when the comparison determines that an event requiring action has occurred; and sending the alerts to care providers. An apparatus that implements the method and a computer readable medium including instructions for performing the method are also provided.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving patient specific data;

comparing the patient specific data with reference data;

producing alerts when the comparison determines that an event requiring action has occurred; and

sending the alerts to care providers.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of comparing the patient specific data comprises:

determining if the patient specific data exceeds trigger criteria in the reference data.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of comparing the patient specific data comprises:

using a plurality of parameters to determine a current score.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the current score is used to prioritize tasks, to change work assignments, and/or for historical analysis.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of sending the alerts to care providers comprises:

using predetermined notification rules to set a notification protocol for sending at least one of a page, e-mail or telephone call to the care providers.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

tracking and trending of the events.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the events are time stamped to enable the historical detailed event state.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

creating pattern associations for triggers used to identify the events.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

recording and monitoring of the events and patterns to trigger additional alerts.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

tracking remediation actions to identify process improvements.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

dynamically customizing the reference data.

12. An apparatus comprising:

an input for receiving patient specific data;

a data repository having reference data and trigger criteria;

a processor for comparing the patient specific data with the reference data and issuing alerts when the trigger criteria are met; and

an output for sending the alerts to care providers.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the reference data are representative of health conditions and safety checks with related dependencies.

14. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the processor implements a plurality of monitors for processing patient specific data and reference data.

15. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the patient specific data comprises extensible mark-up language data.

16. The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising:

a database of notification rules, wherein the alerts are produced in accordance with a notification protocol established by the notification rules.

17. The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising:

an alert repository for receiving the alerts and for sending the alerts to a patient display.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, further comprising:

an alerting agent that analyzes medical records data and searches for conditions that meet criteria in the alert repository.

19. The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising:

a plurality of software modules for controlling the processor, wherein the software modules include an alert event component, a conditions configuration component, and an agent alert pattern component.

20. An apparatus comprising:

a computer readable medium including instructions for configuring a computer system to receive patient specific data;

compare the patient specific data with reference data and trigger criteria;

provide alerts when the trigger criteria are met; and

send the alerts to care providers.
